It’s after a certain manufacture date, IIRC. Some white ones will not work after a certain date.
I can’t remember the date either, but mine was made in October 1999 and I was just playing a custom MvC2 backup today.
Setember 2001, if I’m right, the last batch.
Got part of what I believe to be my secret santa if strogg reads this, sorry, I couldn’t make it to NEC, my car was being a dickhead.
Now I gotta find shit to crimp with my new open barrel crimping tool!
I have yet to see a single DC that wouldn’t boot up a game self booted with an LBA of 45000, like TDC Final v2. Frankly, I havent seen any DC with any problems with a properly made self boot image, but that’s just me. I really think its urban legend.
My Sports edition DC disagrees with you.
LOL oh how I fail

I can’t recall. I know my gray one has problems reading cd-rs too. Mine was manufactured in January 2000

I can confirm that the black Dreamcasts can read burned games, such as Toodles disc.
From what I understand, properly burned self-boot games will run on any dreamcast, but the loophole used in a lot of early scene releases to get them to boot (via tricking it into booting to some obscure media cd format) was taken out in the last batch.
Ooooo, I know the right answer to this. Systems manufactured late 2000 won’t read CDR. The functionality was removed in the firmware. I know because I owned one.

Rock out like it’s 2002.
Yep. And I failed to discover that before I bought one.-,-

remember when i my launch dc stop reading discs period. i was running around all the pawnshops in the area with a bootable disc, at like the fourth one, i finally found one that was able to boot my jap snk2 and im grateful it still works today
So, after a long day on some company mandated team building thing with no Internet access, what do I see on my XMBs news ticker? Neo-Geo classics coming on the 21st! I wonder now if I should get that Exaprize Neo-Geo stick for the PS3.
Wow. News to me. Mostly because I don’t have a 360. I bet my friend who just bought a bunch of carts for his Neo Geo is a bit mad.
I wonder if Magical Drop 3 will be on the list…
^So far, the games dropping on the 21’st are:
- Fatal Fury (Garoudensetsu)
- Metal Slug
- The King of Fighters ?94
- Samurai Spirits
- Super Sidekicks (Tokuten-o)
- Art of Fighting (Ryuuko no Ken)
- ASO II Last Guardian
- League Bowling
- Baseball Stars Professional
- Magician Lord
EDIT:
Here’s a trailer for the whole deal.

Mmm, well, at least it’s not too too much, but at the same time, it’s not so much of my top Neo Geo favorites. Classics, but the only two that really appeal to me are Metal Slug and KOF '94. Needs more of the later editions when they really caught their wind, I think.
And with a list that slim, I doubt I’ll ever see Magical Drop 3
Oh well, that is great!
i have been misinformed all these years D=
You guys are forgetting the only two neo geo games that matter. Wind Jammers and Twinkle Star Sprites.
Oh man, Windjammers > any other neo game. It always pissed me off that it was never added to multi game pcbs for some reason. a port to next gen (XBL hopefully) would make my year.
Why wind jammers isn’t on the list of 360 releases I won’t know. That game is ridiculous.
The list will eventually grow, just like how the list of emulated PC Engine games under the same classics section also grew.
