Best small (22" and below) HDTV for gaming?

Well, my reason, like MRGAY’s is more personal I suppose, but hey, it’s a reason nonetheless. My SSBM crew loves to record the stuff we play, which, as you can figure, is mostly SSBM matches, but we also record some 3S on occasion. The one member of my crew who’s a particular A/Vphile is absolutely crazy about having our matches recorded in the highest possible quality we can muster. Hell, when he bought his new computer recently, he got 2 160 GB hard drive bays specifically to hold match video recordings.

None of us like to lug around HD recording equipment, and since I figured I needed a new monitor anyway, I might as well get one with Component video input as well. My A/Vphile friend and I both plan to get Component AV splitters so that we can record and play in HD at the same time.

Granted, we won’t notice the HD quality while we’re playing, that’s for certain. But we’ll sure as hell notice when we watch the recordings. Anyways, just my $0.02 on this. Plus, 22" definitely works well as a computer monitor as stated before.

Alright buddy, go to THIS thread and knock yourself out. Best monitors in categories (nicest color, least input lag, etc). You might find something that’s big there.

Response time doesn’t have to do too much with how much input lag you will get. Response time is how fast the pixels will move on the screen so you won’t get crazy blurring or ghosting. 2ms is the lowest on the market, from what I’ve seen, but 2-6 is pretty unnoticable.

As for what you should get, it really depends. if you’re looking for something below 32", I guess it would end up being a monitor, because regardless what HDTV you get, there will ALWAYS be input lag, which sucks major cojones. The only known ways to reduce it is getting a VGA box (like teh XRGB3 or Gamebox HD[I’ll be testing the latter, stay tuned!]), or using the HDTV’s built-in game mode. The best game modes I know are the Sharp Aquos, seem to have NO input lag at all, and Sony game modes aren’t half bad. On mine, I turned off all video processing and put game mode on and it’s barely there, I thought I was playing on a CRT a few times, fools me. For your 360, I’d look for a monitor that supports HDMI.

Iiyama Pro lite B2403ws
BenQ E2200HD, E2400HD, E2600HD
BenQ G2400WD

Also, try www.hardforum.com, go to Display. LOADS of very helpful reviews there.

I absolutely recommend the BenQ E2200HD, fantastic monitor. Just bought a 360, and it works brilliantly - 1080p support, the monitor deals with the audio correctly too (audio over hdmi -> monitor passthrough -> amplifier) so I don’t have to hack up a 360 av cable to fit alongside the hdmi cable

No noticable input lag. I may have seen a little ghosting, but then I had a migraine and it was late, so it could have just been me

thanks a lot! this was very helpful!

I mixed up response time with input lag lol. i feel like a newbie.

So I just got the HD Gamebox in the mail today (ridiculously fast shipping.)

Connecting the Wii through the Gamebox into my HDTV produced some small input lag (it could be overlooked.) Image was shit, I didn’t really get around to tweaking stuff.

Just tried my PS2 with composite cables with the Gamebox on my CRT and it works flawlessly, nice picture. I’m about to hook it up to my dad’s 22" monitor, we’ll see how that goes.

you tried composite with the wii right ? well you should get a component or directly an unofficial vga cable

Nah, I have components for the Wii, the picture was hilarious, I tell ya, haha.

I tried Guilty Gear Accent Core on the PS2 on my dad’s Dell 22" monitor. I could false roman cancel pretty well, couldn’t sense any input lag that I would know of. I’m waiting for my LG monitor to come in for final verdict. But otherwise, the HD Gamebox does work nicely, gunna try it out with the Wii through components later today.

Not sure if your monitor supports Sync-on-green, but Accent Core is definitely a game that handles 480p mode - which means if you have the PS2->Component cables and then a VGA adapter, you can plug it directly into the monitor.

There’s some button combination to hold down to allow you to select the 480p mode, but I can never remember it, and just hold down the four face buttons instead.

(Actually, now that I think about it, the JP Accent Core supports 480p, I haven’t tried it with a US release)

US Release supports 480p as well. The button combo for the US version (which I think is the same as the Japanese version) is hold Triangle and X during start-up.

Just to clarify, the HD Gamebox is a VGA box, hooks up through a small black block with composite or component cables. I tried out the 360 really quickly last night on the CRT (only way to get it close to an ethernet cable for Live, haha), and it worked nicely, image was nice. Also tried on the Wii through components on the CRT, image was REALLY nice. Today the monitor will be delivered, so I’ll post my final thoughts on the HD Gamebox and the monitor itself. So far, the HD Gamebox is working as advertised. Anything through composite cables is epic fail, but through components picture quality is pretty nifty. Gamebox runs a bit hot, though, nothing to be too worried about.

so you bought a monitor ^^
well its good everything worked out, after giving it a few more rounds tell us what you think of it (maybe help someone out on making a decision)

i personally got my Samsung 2232BW
I am pretty happy with the purchase
movies looks great on it (for the price at least)
games looks great (but I assume it could be better)

i am now looking for that right adapter to hook up my DC…
would you recommend that HD gamebox?
I was looking at http://www.racketboy.com/store/dreamcast-vga-box-svideo-av.htm

Final verdict is epic win!

I got the LG L227WTG last night (along with a thousand other boxes of purchases), hooked it up. I spent a good 30 minutes troubleshooting the monitor because the computer would restart if the monitor’s resolution was changed. Finally got the right drivers and it all worked nicely.

Now, I tested it out with the HD Gamebox and the Wii. The picture quality wasn’t fantastic, I didn’t tweak with much anyway. I wasn’t very bothered, it wasn’t horrid, quite acceptable, looked even better probably with the component cables. No input lag, I would have to do more testing if I want some crazy number crunching. Otherwise, best investment in a monitor ever, the Gamebox does its job well.

dejeckt, if you’re only looking to connect your Dreamcast, get the one you linked me to. I’m sure dedicated VGA boxes project a much cleaner image than a whore-in-all for everything.

Ladies and gentlemen, I highly recommend the LG L227WTG. thumbs up
