I’m looking for something that can handle games like Guilty Gear and Third Strike with absolutely NO lag and can also double as a monitor (hence, why I want it relatively small.) Any direction would be appreciated, thanks in advance. =)
Well, if I’m remember all the stuff I learned from the HDTV FAQ correctly, then there’s no way you can have a lagless 3S experience unless you’ve got a step-up converter since no version of 3S has support for anything higher than 480i (at least, I’m pretty sure the CapKore 3S doesn’t have it). Guilty Gear’s a definite go, though there will be just a tad bit of lag depending on which monitor you get.
As for the actual monitor, check out the ASUS PG221H 22". It has inputs for Composite, Component, S-Video, HDMI (via adapter) and VGA, so you can use it as a computer monitor and a gaming monitor.
Thanks a lot Ikagi-chan, I’ve skimmed through a good twenty pages on the forums, and I’ve heard of certain Game Modes (namely, from the Sharp Aquos series) that really do their job in delivering no lag.
I’m reading up on this monitor though, it seems pretty good with great response time (2 ms). Def. something to check out. Anyone else can point me to something else? Again, help is greatly appreciated. =)
Ive got an HP 22 inch model no HP w2207h has direct HDMI input true 1080p no lag for tekken or street fighter check out my youtube video .Has a black shiny mirror like screen like you get on sony laptops.best screen http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=uMzqAZKSmQE
Haha, I checked out your video, I loved your quote:
"Weep americans your internet is ssssssslow"
totally cracked me up, rofl.
Back on topic though, I see it does have an HDMI port, only problem is also I have a Wii and a PS2 and I’d love to hook them up to the monitor. I’m looking at that monitor though, I really like it and it’s relatively cheap. But as for component and composite inputs, does anyone know of a workaround for that, or the monitor specifically needs analog inputs?
EDIT:
So far I have three monitors, just compiling them if anyone wants to check them out.
BenQ V2400W - 24" (It was recommended to someone in the HDTV lag thread.)
ASUS PG221H - 22" (From this thread, boasts 2 ms response time with analog and digital inputs [RBG, composite and HDMI ports]0
HP W2207H - 22" (Also from this thread, Naruto Uzumaki claims it has no lag for games like Tekken and Street Fighter, has video up, HDMI port ONLY)
Get the Iiyama Pro lite B2403ws, it’s 24", has a very low, if not the lowest input lag(on the left is the iiyama 26" and on the right the 24", values in ms) in it’s category; you can rotate it (great for shmups), it’s fullHD, very fast response time (typicaly 2-3ms if you set OverDrive on 2 in the screen menu), you can also switch beween input 1 (HDMI) and 2 (VGA) (you can find unnoficial VGA cable for wii on divineo.cn for example, so can you for ps2, but if the game doesn’t support progressive, you’re pretty much stuck)
don’t forget input lag is completely diffrent than response time (input time is the time to process the video signal in the monitor and be ready to dispay it, and response time is the time between being ready to dispay on the panel and see the given frame on screen
If you want a TV, then no idea, but I notice you have the BenQ V2400W in that list… you could also try the BenQ E2200HD for 22" 1920x1080 or E2400HD for 24" 1920x1080. That’s a true 16:9 ratio 1080p, so works well with xbox360/ps3 and widescreen movies. Cheap, low input lag (almost as good as CRT)… I recently got the 22" and am very happy with it.
Wow guys, thanks for all of your suggestions, I’ve got a growing list, don’t know what to choose! But I have a question on VGA: does using a VGA box with component cables introduce input lag on the monitor? I think on a regular monitor it wouldn’t matter, but the HD ones like the BenQ2200HD or the HP W2207H, would input lag occur?
you mean to display 480i signal though component from a ps2 ? (as i said earlier, you can directly find vga cable for wii, the signal will be much nicer like that)
well the vga box will have to first convert the interelaced signal to progressive signal, which you can pretty much sum up with waiting 1/60th a second for the 2half of the lines to be sent by the ps2 to display a full progressive (480p) picture.
then, depending on you vga box, the signal might be upscaled to an other resolution (like 720p ou 1080p), thing that your HD screen could do anyway by itself.(if you feed it directly with 480p for example)
the real question would be which of the two (vgabox or screen) would give the best result for the upsclaling process in terms of picture quality AND time (input lag) ?
and the answer will be different depending on what vgabox you use and what screen you choose
(just know that a lot of vgaboxes do a very bad job at upscaling in terms of picture quality, and that you never want to use anything else than YUV/component with a ps2 and a vgabox)
All I can say is that I’m quite happy with my xrgb-3 and my Iiyama ProLite 24".
I’ve been looking for a very long time for the best picture quality and the less input lag I can get at affordable price and that’s what I can up with.
another option (maybe cheaper) was to get another BenQ than the one above that had a YUV input (the Iiyama doesn’t) and then obviously not buy a vga box; but I already had the xrgb-3 anyway, plus I got the change to compare both screen and I liked the Iiyama better than the BenQ I saw.
Yea, dropping 300 USD for that VGA box is nuts, you’re lucky you had it lying around, haha. I’ve seen some dirt cheap VGA boxes on ebay that run a good 40 bucks, I imagine the quality isn’t the best at all. Shin-Kaz, your Iiyama ProLite is pretty damn good, next to no input lag, that’s why I was thinking in investing for a VGA box on ebay. Otherwise, I was thinking either that ASUS that was first recommended or the BenQ. I just want something with component inputs to avoid getting a VGA box.
Shin-Kaz, what do you think if I get a cheap VGA box and that Iiyama?
Oh yeah, the BenQ models I listed don’t have component in or anything. I haven’t tried PS2-over-vga yet (through the composite cables), so not sure if that works on the BenQ. Was pretty sweet on my old monitor though. No noticable lag, but I’m sure that depends on the scaler on the monitor - BenQ are becoming renown for fast monitors though.

CRT to BenQ V2400W comparison, and from what I see, no flippin’ lag at all, shame it has nothing but HDMI and DVI-D. Apparently though, the LG Flatron L227WTG has no lag, but DVI-D only.
Seems like there are not a lot of good options with component inputs, just that ASUS, or use a VGA box, but I would imagine all that middle man stuff from console to monitor would introduce input lag.
I have my eye on this SAMSUNG ToC T220HD 22" any one can common on it?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001278
I’d skip the T220HD. Seems to have pretty bad lag.
According to Anandtech’s LCD monitor thread, the best 22" monitor you can get for gaming is the LG L227WT. Zero lag compared to a CRT monitor, and the colors are very good. I tried out the monitor in a Tiger Direct with my laptop and I liked it. I didn’t get this monitor just because I went for a 24".
If you want a Samsung, the 2493HM seems like a good choice. They just added it to the reccomended list. Its 24", and has zero lag compared to a CRT. My deal breaker with Samsungs is that they don’t support 1:1 scaling for non-native resolutions. I don’t know if that becomes a problem with a 1080p signals (it could stretch a 1080-line image into the monitor’s 1200 lines) but anything 4:3 will get stretched to 16:10. Personal no-no because of games.
For 24", a very good all-around monitor is the BenQ G2400WD. 1.9 to 3ms lag compared to a CRT?which is pretty good for a 24" since generally they are slower than 22"?, HDMI, and 1:1 scaling for non-native resolutions.
I’m currently using this monitor for my laptop, and will also be my Playstation3/BluRay display. I don’t plan to use the monitor for older consoles, though, but I think it can do the job.
The BenQ V2400W is a later model, but apparently not as fast as the G2400WD. Anandtech used to have the V2400W instead of the G2400WD in their recommended list because the G2400WD was hard to find, but BenQ recently put the G2400WD back in stock. I ordered my G2400WD on BenQ’s online store in October, and I am very happy with it.
What consoles are you gonna use it for?
3s on Xbox has 480p support. And if you have a PS3, it can pretty much scale up to any resolution with no lag afaik.
I will be using the Wii through component cables, and I’m awaiting component cables for the PS2. I also own an Xbox 360, stock component cables. I have a lot of my fighters on the PS2, and I play Brawl on the Wii. The only reason I even got a 360 recently was in anticipation for SF4.
EDIT: If I ever considered getting a VGA box for one of these monitors without analog inputs, would this be nice?
deadend, according to a user there, no input lag for this one, apparently, check it out.
I’m leaning toward that LG and investing in the VGA box I posted above, I’ll keep looking for something with analog inputs.
EDIT: Whoah guys, found something dirty cheap
Westinghouse LCM-22w2
Side by side comparison with an Acer monitor, both seem to perform pretty well and no input lag, and big plus is component inputs.
Hello,
My current setup uses a sony bravia HDTV.
I play 3s on PS2 on it through an upscan converter called G Sense. I got it shipped from Korea. it was only around 100CAD in total.
I also have a wii connected to the TV, but the wii has 480p so it doesn’t lag.
I’m very happy with the upscan converter so far. It’s very clear and there’s no lag. I do training mode on my HDTV at home and play on an SDTV at my friend’s house and everything is ok. the converter takes component cables and outputs using VGA.
the converter also has VGA in and 2 component inputs. So you can put in 2 systems and still use the TV as a second monitor.
Whoah, I own a Sony Bravia HDTV, mine is 40", what is yours?
I have my Wii connected through component cables on 480p, but I experience lag playing Brawl, what did you do?
Also, do you have a link as to where you found this upscan converter? Seems relatively cheap.
I asked Laugh from this forum to ship it to me.
hmm… I’m not sure about lag with brawl. I know when I first got the wii, it was set to 480i and I was using wavebirds. I did notice lag. I switched it to 480p but I haven’t REALLY tested brawl again. Although, using wired controllers helped a little, the real problem should have been the 480i setting.
