Justin Wong for the person that no matter who is playing him I won’t bet against the guy. It’s possible for him to lose, but his understanding of the game on a basic level is just so far beyond most people.
After that I would put Combofiend, PR Balrog, F-Champ, and Mine.
Best game knowledge goes to Viscant, despite me occasionally disagreeing with him.
Cyke is Storm’s best friend. Commando is Sent’s best friend. Cyke + Sent is sub-optimal, that’s why you don’t see a lot of Matrixs despite Cyke being clearly a better point character than Commando or Psylocke.
I think right now Combofiend’s the best contender–there’s something beautiful and compelling about the way he surgically cracks people open and pours buckets of salt in their wounds, pun intended.
He’s only winning if the South East doesn’t show up. The south east is ridiculous in Soul Calibur. It’s where RTD is from, and tons of solid players are in ATL along with him. I’m a little tired of people talking about SCV, and not mentioning the very city that completely dominates the game, since we don’t have to be on the West Coast, and we don’t have letters in front of our names.
Chris G got second at a local Battle and Brew tournament
He got below top 8 in Impact Clash V later that week
Lost countless money matches to local (unknown) players
Oddly enough, the only tournament he won when he was down here was an MK tournament.
He left the south east salty and broke.
This was during the vanilla days, but we aren’t exactly a scene full of Phoenix players.
While I myself am a crappy Marvel player, there are many players in my local area who are more than enough to take on all of these names people are throwing around. There are too many unknown players in this game who can step up and body all of these marquee players. Just because someone doesn’t have 3 letters in front of their name, doesn’t mean they aren’t nasty in this game.
And I find it odd that Norcal players are never mentioned in convesations like these. I’ve watched tons of Norcal streams, and I’ve seen absolute killers featured on them.
I think the Evo results are going to be turned upside down. You people are sleeping
Oh yea now that i think about it…i did see that stream when Chris G lost. The guy named SoMuchDamage or something won right? That stream had alot of good unknown players…you guys should travel more and make your names more known!
Socal - HedgeFundFiend, Jwong, Fanatiq
Norcal - Mine, FChamp
SD - Viscant, Dios X
Some island - PR Rog, Flocker
NY - Chris G, NoelBHungry
Jersey - Marlin Pie, Masta CJ (is CJ from jersey or NY?)
Japan - GX (aka Kuuron)
2nd tier players that have potential to win majors: RayRay, Bum (if he ever mans up and enters), DJ Houshen, Unknown
Out of all regions, I’d say best overall is…
Combofiend
Chris G - i can’t wait to see how his Morrigan team fares over time. he basically took Dieminion’s strategy but made it better. But we still haven’t seen how the Morrigan stuff will hold up against WC players
JWong - I’d put him higher, but we haven’t seen him in any tournies since SCR. But the fact that he won a major with Iron Fist buys him some time. I really hope he attends Winterbrawl
Noel - just because of how consistent he is.
Marlin Pie - I’m tired of hearing the “never blocks” argument. He can block just fine, it’s just that his team works best with relentless rushdown. And when you have to rush down that hard, the opponent will get a lucky counter-hit sometimes.
I also wanted to include Clockwork, but he seems to be held back by something in Ultimate. I respect his commitment to Strider, but I just don’t think Strider is best for his team. I’d love to see him try Zero / Doom / Ammy (Zero will get Doom meter for level 3’s, Doom’s assists help Zero get in or extend combos, Ammy’s Cold Star for lockdown / incoming char mixups, and Ammy is a legit anchor now with the speed boost). It’s basically Viscant’s current team but without the Phoenix liability and meter restriction.
I think Marlinpie and Clockw0rk are two of the best, but are probably served by more than a couple of matches. Marlinpie adjust and adapts, but it takes him a couple of matches to figure it out. See his matches with ChrisG’s Morrigan/Doom for an example. Pie and Clock seem to just not quiiiite make it in the end. By far the most entertaining to to watch though.
Justin, Combo and Viscant seem like obvious choices since they usually have good showing.
TooMuchDamage. Also got Top 16 at SB:V and I think FR, too. Also pretty good at SF4.
You guys are lucky that I won’t be able to make it to Final Round XV and body fools with the totally mind-blowing skill I wield in my delusions and fantasies.
