I play Super Street Fighter IV and have tried other fighting games, and feel comfortable using all controllers. I’ve done 96% of trials on SSFIV with a 360 controller but I can do them with the PS3 one too (and other unofficial gimmicky ones of both versions). Question is, which is the best? If I’m playing on PC, what’s the best one? The least latency, the most accurate input, the one least likely to fall out of your hand etc. If you have no preference, is there any advantage of choosing one over another? And if not, could anyone recommend any custom made controller which would be good for fighting games; preferably with a large left analog stick?
If you are comfortable with a pad, why bother switching to anything else? Just find the controller you like the most and use that.
It’s just that all the pro players use fight sticks so I’m wondering what disadvantages there are to normal controllers. And why would anyone use those fightpads with the DPAD but not analog stick?
Not all the pro players use arcade sticks exclusively though…Vangief is one I can recall use pad.
most top players just started a long time ago when arcades were still around and had the fiercest comp. its really just coincidence. I guess you could make an argument for easier access to buttons, or using stronger muscles for movement with a stick than just your thumb in the case of a dpad, but the jury’s out as to whether those are that significant
analog stick licks balls tho lol. I’d rather use the Dreamcast fishing controller
What’s wrong with analog?
just my personal opinion. the lack of corners of any type or switch clicks makes it super easy to lose your bearings on what direction you’re actually holding. at least dpad you know which direction is which. I’ve also never heard of anyone who is good with analog stick. you could be the first but I wouldn’t recommend it. I’ve only ever seen it used as an approximation for an arcade stick for some noob hoping to switch to stick, and even then its a terrible approximation for a stick.
If you’re looking for a controller, most are about the same. If you can, get a WiiU pro controller or find a way to connect a playstation controller to the PC. If you’re looking for a stick, any stick with Sanwa buttons would be a good one. The most popular ones are the MadCatz Tournament Edition type sticks. Any of the newer TEs (like the Soul Calibur V or TE-S+ ones) will work on PC. The older style of PS3 TEs had problems with certain USB chipsets.
I prefer DS2/DS3 for fighters as I’ve used Duelshock most of my life and I can’t get comfortable with a stick. Plus I get mild cramps from using stick.
Outside of the Saturn pad already mentioned, I think PS2 pad is the best. It offers the most precision and, ironically, is easier to convert to 360 than the PS3 pad is.
If you use the analog stick to play, you might consider an AGE pad like Fanatiq uses. It’s got the analog where the PS2 D-Pad is normally, and I even use it sometimes. Way more precise than the 360 analog stick.
Use a stick for 3 months and you won’t wanna go back to pad.
I don’t see how anyone can play on D-pad. Like that Saturn controller or the official Street Fighter IV ones. Do people serieously use a d-pad with 4 directions to play? It makes no sense. Why would you choose 4 directions over 360?
Again, it all boils down to preference. I like playing with the 360 D-pad and the only issue I have is continuously doing RDP motions. Regular DP’s are fine.
cause motion in fighting games isn’t that dynamic. there are only 8 directions that matter, and D pad lets you know exactly where each of those directions are.
Saturn is best.
Dual Shock 1 takes #2. DS3 sucks because of the R2/L2 buttons and the wireless nonsense, and the DS2 and its analog buttons piss me off… I feel like nothing comes out when I expect it to. Red parry? More like eat a fucking dick.
Genesis 6 takes #3
Dreamcast if you’re going to play Marvel 2 or Project Justice with it. Those 4-button fighters work hella smooth on that fucking thing.
MadCatz Fightpads suck ass.
About the analog… Funny thing about your comment… The DS1 I was using forever pissed me off for that stick, so I sawed the top of the stick off of it so I can play ST on GGPO with it…
I am not used to play fighting games on a pad either. they are so demanding that I my thumb hurts, I prefer keyboard since the layout is closer to a stick and dp motions are much easier.
a platformer, a shmup or a racer are feasible on pad. But a fighter? not a chance, except if I use B.B Hood in Vampire Savior.
But I can go from stick to keyboard easily
DS3 dpad fucking kills my thumb. wasn’t a problem with DS1 or DS2.
Wii CCP feels good but in my experience tends to ghost inputs towards up right occasionally. it’s a great way to accidentally get tiger knees.
360 dpad is pretty bad.
none of the dpads from last gen felt great to me. and almost any converter for older pads is going to lag you at least a frame. for that reason I picked up stick a year ago and haven’t regretted it.
So am I right in thinking the best controller (if you don’t use d-pad) is the PS2 one?
