SF3 had the best spites IMO, the animation was excellent and the overall look of the game was well executed. Oh and just to comment on the SNK comment, although the resolution might not be the best Id argue that games like LB2.Real Bout, SST, Garou and especially AOF3 have better looking sprites then cvs2 SNK characters…some of them we’re really poorly drawn IMO.
Garou’s sprites are really great.
Everything about the Marvel characters is excellent.
i agree
my favorite sprites are most of the new sprites for the CVS series
oddly enough im not a fan of the new shoto sprites, but alot of the new SNK ones look fantastic. Also Eagle, Maki, theres alot of good looking sprites in that game
being an animation buff, i must say that 3S is like a wet dream of a frame based motion
yo:
what is that in your avatar from?
resolution is a major detractor from the aesthetic quality of the sprites for me
however LB2 did have some great sprites also
AOF3? really? any pics?
i am not a fan of garous sprites; the game is cool but the sprites are pretty fugly imo, and the animation (while very good by SNKs standards) was inconsistant and awkward at parts.
Oh really? None of CvS2’s sprites are stiff like so many in KOF.
A basic idea of the sprite quaility of AOF3. CVS2 didnt really impress me as far as sprite quaility is concerned…not to mention the game had terrible animation(almost SF2 level). Anyone I have to disagree with the Garou comment cause IMO i think the animation rivaled SF3 as far as animation.
3s, very easily imo. they just look the best to me.
vs is good too, and i did like some of the sprites in the marvel games. they captured some of the marvel characters very well.
I came into this thread thinking the same thing. Those sprites were the bomb!
Just because CvS sprites don’t measure up to an extreme example of an SNK game doesn’t make them any less interesting. They’re still better than a lot of sprites from KOF, and older games from every other series. The animation is merely inconsistent in some moves, but not on the same level as SF2.
And if you ask me, the AOF3 sprites are too rigid.
Really? nah I never like the coloring of the CVS2 sprites…plus I just cant see past the horrible animation.
^buggin
i was trying to avoid the subject of animation (or keep it separate) but…
my opinions on animation:
although the animating frame rate of CVS2 may be a drop from say Garou the overall economy of the animation seems better.
Garou does not remedy SNKs trademark stiffness (i would say the the AOF series is an archetypical display of this stiffness, however the sprites do look good in that little youtube vid imo).
The CVS2 animators imo smoothed out a bit of the stiffness in some of the characters motions as well as giving them a visual overhaul that i found pleasing.
i do like KOF games, but i like them despite the fact that they look ugly (they are fun to play).
However alot of the newer KOF sprites, despite being rather pixelated, animate beautifully (I love Angel’s animations as well as her moveset - probably one of my all time favorite chars).
and i honestly think that 3S is in a league all its own in terms of animation. Nothing even seems to come close.

Chun Li ruined CVS 2 IMO, but I couldn’t ignore the fact that most of the Capcom side work was still underpolished. See Sagat run? I really couldn’t. It was gross.

Funny how the official 3rd installments are the ones that either make(SF3:2nd Impact) or break(AOF 3) the series. Capcom did work with the 3 series and we fans were well rewarded. It was the most vibrant of the three SF 3s, regardless of it being a remix of New Generation.
Super Turbo… Though that is Street Fighter II… they are separate in the poll. But super turbo, the proportions and shading spot on. Look at Dee Jay’s sprite, and you can see they had to have been looking at photos of body builders to get the right shine of the light on the muscles. This kind of attention to detail has now been forfeited for the “anime” look.
Also, Geif sprites past SF2 make him into a ridiculous freak. Honestly if you look at them and try to think of ir seriously, there is no human on earth that looks anything like that.
On the one hand, Sagat’s run animation does look pretty second rate, as if it were put together in the 11th hour… but on the other hand, the pose of him running with his body pitched forward and his fists up is great. Makes him look dangerous. It’s teh arpe run.
And I love Dan, Honda, and Joe’s running animations for entirely different reasons.
3rd strike for me, followed by the Alpha series, dunno why, I just liked the look of the Alpha sprites.
kof 2000
me vote for 3s
the animation, the art direction, the maturity of Ryu and Ken (as oppsed to their kiddy Alpha look)
Alpha sprites.
SF3 sprites for me.
ON cvs2 sprties: the sprites looked awful to me. The sprites in that game that weren’t copy and pasted from another game and were brand new to cvs2 included.
and giefs run animation as example of how bad the new animations were.
I always thought either Zero from KoF2k/2k1 had the best animation of any single character. Zero’s cape flowed so amazingly smooth. I never really played either game, kinda curious if he was playable/overpowered or what.
After him I probably liked Gill most; muscle-man in a thong or not, independent left side/right side animations are totally hawt. The odd shimmering effect he had in 3s made him really interesting to watch, and I thought the icy effect when he hit you was cool.
