What games involving street fighter chars did you think had the best sprites?
Edit:
Apparently 3rd Strike is like sex for your eyes.

Err, Super Turbo is a version of Street Fighter II, so I don’t know why you have them listed separately.
Anyway, they all have their points. SF2’s sprites were simple and well-proportioned, with a level of shading that didn’t really ever show up again. They animated a bit oddly at times, but overall they were pleasant and have stood the test of time well, IMO.
Alpha’s sprites were quite well drawn and animated, but the minimal shading made them seem a bit flat. The stylzing was a bit over the top in some places too (Zangief for example)
SF3 obviously has the animation going for it. In addition the greater color palette was used for more indepth lighting/shading, which was quite nice. However the characters’ proportions were pretty odd, with little heads, huge feet, etc.
SF1 :looney:
those sprites are pimp.

OMG, I’ve seriously never seen those before. Not gonna lie though, they are a whole lot better than I woulda thought before I had seen that video.
Aren’t VS series sprites ripped from alpha?
More or less. Though in CvsS1, Ryu, Ken and Bison got all new sprites and in Cvs2 Chunli got a new sprite that was more or less based off her 3rd Strike Sprite. Too ball all the other SF characters didn’t get that treatment.
Well since we’re talking about sprites alone, I’d say that I like the 3s sprites and the VS series sprites alot. Both project are the best collobarative works of CRMK, and Akiman ( although I think they were heavily influenced by Ikeno Medaka for the 3s works). I remember when I first played COTA, it felt like I was playing an anime of the X-Men. The cinematic ambiance of the game really was well put together. I think they captured this well until MVC2. That game looks like Mugen to me still, granted its a great competitive game–it just looks
terrible.
I know SNK fans are gonna hate me but, I have to say the Capcom renditions of the SNK characters in the CVS series are amazing. It’s a shame that’s the only way we’ll ever see SNK characters look so nice, at least until XII.
Honorable mentions also go to Guy, Rolento, and Rose’s sprites from the Alpha series. I think Kinu Nishimura may have done Rolento’s sprite. She did a really good gesture/planning sketch for Rolento in the Old Days (DesignWorks) book, and it was pretty dead on to his standing animation. Plus he sort of fits her drawing style well.
SF3. Prior to the hi-res revolution, they were the finest sprites ever.
I like Alpha sprites the best, the looked younger and had a more anime-ish feel which I preferred.
Just based of the sprite alone and no animation: CvS. Updated chun, ryu, bison, ken.
3s wins hands down when it comes to animation, though a lot of the sprites are hit or miss. Shotos look kinda weird, makoto looks decent.
wow SF2 and ST
duhhhhhhhhhhh
Gem Fighter
I always thought that as well, and its part of the reason why I’m keeping hope alive for a cvs3
lols sorry.
and yeah i basically meant the updated shoto, bison, chun sprites when I put CvS2 in the poll. I always thought the alpha sagat sprite was a pretty good one.
Joke topic?
The best Capcom sprites overall are in Marvel Super Heroes. Yes, the original MSH, not the clipped down Versus Game versions of them (although MvC1 Venom is probably one of the very best). Simply incredible then and now.
3S sprites have the best animation by far, but I don’t like the colors and proportions. Makoto looks a little silly with her swollen feets and hands. As does Alex with his “spaghetti fingers”. Also, Ryu looks way too old when he’s only supposed to 30 years old. And why does his hair look blue?
For certain characters like Joe, Yamazaki, and Iori I have to actually agree.
But definitely not for all of them. CvS Athena, King, and Ryo are fucking horrible. Totally botched by Capcom.
i’m gonna go crazy and say WARZARD has some awesome sprites
lol not the cfj versions obviously
The sprites have these characteristics for the reason that anime characters tend to have big eyes and small mouths. It’s not necessarily meant to look realistic, but more expressionistic.
Dammit, I forgot about Warzard. Although technically the topic only states games with SF chars.
My criticism of 3S sprites isn’t over whether they are realistic or not. I have no problem with a lack of realism. It’s just something about the colors I don’t like. I mean, I can’t stand 3S Chun’s standing sprite because she looks balding and the color of her boots bleed slightly.
St:hd
lol she always reminded me of a chipmunk that’s the only problem i have with her sprite.
