Best bet for the best fighting game console?

Ok, I wasn’t sure where to post this, so if this needs to be moved then move it or let me know what to do. I’ve an avid fighting game fan, but I haven’t been into the scene that much in the past couple of years because of work, school, etc. Now that college is over with, I find that I have more free time, outside of my MMA and gym. So I really want to get back into comps and tournaments, and that of course means practice. Right now I just have an XBOX with about zero games, I gave all my games away to my friend. Figure its better for someone to be using them then collecting dust. So now I’m ready to purchase a new system, but I don’t know which one is going to be the beast for fighting games. I know some systems will have their exclusives, like XBOX will have DOA, Sony will have Tekken and I guess Virtua Fighter, not sure about WII, but which one will be the dominant one for SNK and Capcom fighting games or 2d games? I’m guessing either XBOX 360 or Sony since of the downloadable nonsense. I know that the PS2 has a shitload of 2D games if you are willing to import, so here are my options, please help me decide. I know that a lot of the new systems require that you go online to get the full benefit but I may or may not go online, so please keep that in mind.

  1. XBOX 360
  2. PS3 - I’m hoping that since the PS3 will be universal that I can play PS2 Japanese import games, does anyone know about this yet or not?
  3. PS2 Jap system with import games - a definite bet, but I’d rather not invest that much money in a fading system unless I have to.
  4. WII - uh do I actually have to do a shoryuken punch to do a shoryuken punch on screen?
  5. Wait out the storm and go to my local arcade

I know that the PS2 has shitloads of 2D fighting games right now, but is there any news on if they are coming to the XBOX or the PS3 in future releases, perhaps compilations or something?

Rumour has it that SNK/Playmore are moving to the Wii, as it will be a more 2D-friendly platform (Sony have announced several times now that 2D titles are not welcome on the PS3). And no, you won’t be using the Wii-mote to play fighters. The Wii can take both GameCube controllers AND has it’s own 6-button classic controller.

Jump in http://images.google.com and look for “Wii Classic Controller” if you’ve been hiding under a rock and don’t know what it will look like.

But anyways, that’s all rumour at this stage. Don’t bet the house on it.

SNK/P are currently shoving all their stuff on PS2. I certainly wouldn’t call the PS2 a “fading” system. Remember that Sony supported the PS1 for seven whole years after the release of the PS2. Likewise when the PS3 hits and goes all “next-gen-bazillion-polys” crazy, the PS2 will still be attractive as a cheap development platform for game makers to look at. And I don’t doubt Sony will relax the restrictions on the PS2 to get more indi devs looking at it, while the PS3 becomes their mainstream show-pony packed to the gills with pretty yet boring games.

At the end of the day, you need to write down your top 10 favourite fighters, and research what platforms they are avilable on. I went through exactly what you’re doing now around 2 years ago after almost an 8 year hiatus from fighting games. Where that landed me was with a few empty arcade cabinets, a modded-for-import-play PS2 (was a cheaper option at the time then getting a Japanese PS2 into the country) and a Dreamcast. With that setup, I’ve covered all the games I enjoy. I don’t really care about what the future holds for 3D fighters. VF5 doesn’t tickle me, and I play the Tekkens only very occasionally. I don’t even consider the DOA games real fighting games. They are just boob bounce simulators where people happen to slap each other about occasionally.

I also happen to play a lot of shoot 'em ups, and again the PS2 and Dreamcast are where it’s at for that genre. Anything that’s on the XBox is either available as a better port on another system, or doesn’t interest me. Probably because it’s a mainstream American console aimed at a mainstream American audience, and I play mostly Japanese games. With that said, Xbox has got online play, which is cool if you live in a country that has decent ping times. I don’t, which is another reason I never bothered with it.

I have no idea what the status of Sony’s PS3->PS2 backward compatability will be. The difference in processor architecture means that it will be software/emulation based if it is, and quite frankly I can smell another XBox360->Xbox fiasco. Again, I wouldn’t go betting the house on anything until you see it in the flesh for yourself. Kutaragi is a funny bloke, and I don’t trust him as far as I can dropkick him. I’ll let the hardware speak for itself on arrival. Until then, my PS2 and Dreamcast treat me very well.

I was expecting Xbox2 to be the new fighter platform. As GC controller…well blows. Time to learn Joystick with gusto if you are right, though.

Yeah, the gamecube controller sucks, but they are easy to hack to make joysticks out of. if you are into that sort of thing.

I’m fine with playing SF anniversary collection on my xbox, I play on live a lot. I use custom sticks with controller adapters for PS2, I’d say you would be good at just getting a PS2 and keeping your xbox. I don’t see many new fighters coming to next gen immediately with the exception of the Wii’s snk stuff, which I don’t even know which games they are.

ps2 of course. just get a magic slide and play all the imports and burned games you want. end of story. you shouldnt even be asking this question.

Yeah but the magic slide and all that crap requires modding, and knowledge of how to do that type of stuff, and quite frankly I’m not tech savvy, and make enough money to well uh actually buy the games as opposed to illegally copying them.

Hacking is for broke ass suckas, I buy my games…gold plated.

The Wii probably isn’t gonna get those SNK fighters, though. Sony is leaning back on its policies of anti-SNKitude.

Anyway…it depends. PS2 has the stupid, broken versions of 3d fighting games like Tekken 5 and SC3. Xbox has the SNK games like Neowave and SSV, along with Live. 360 is the platform of the future. PS3 can play PS2 games, no region coding, and Tekken 6 and VF5.

I suppose you should wait for the PS3…but who knows?

You dont want to use anything on the WII to play fighters with anyway.

modding isnt that hard. especially for the non slim ps2’s. should be easy enough for you. unless your retarded

you must be crazy. lets list ps2s fighting games

tekken1-5
street fighter alpha 1-3
street fighter third strike
street fighter 2-super turbo
capcom fighting jam
guilty gear xx-slash
samurai tenka, and i think 3
kof xi, and numerous amounts of others. like almost all of them it seems
melty blood
soon to be fist of the north star
mvc2
fuck it. im done. pretty much every major fighting game is on the ps2. they might not be arcade perfect, but well, the arcades are pretty much dead anyways.

im sure dr will drop on ps2 soon. tekken 6 probably wont be coming for a minute. vf5 wont be played as seriously for a while, because of the high price of a ps3. most people arent that pressed to play a new fighting game, that they would spend hundreds of dollars on a ps3. then what, another 80 for the game. spending 600-700 dollars just to play vf5 is not on my to do list. but thats besides the point.

everything you want is on the ps2 or was on the ps1 and you can play it on the ps2. so get a ps2 and close this thread

When I said hacking I meant making custom controllers, not copying games. I do not pirate games.

As mentioned already, If you’re serious about fighters, you play with a stick. A systems gamepad is not a valid reason for buying or not buying a console these days.

There’s a million and one custom stick makers these days who support every console out there. Custom sticks will appear for the Wii as soon as fighters appear for it, with the exception of analogue stick fighters like the Smash Brothers series.

I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not. I’m all for Sony pulling their heads out of their arses and allowing 2D titles again, but I’m not interested in spending stupid amounts on a PS3 when I can buy Atomiswave cartridges for less!

The PS3 will debut here in Australia for AU$1000 (around US$750). I can by an Atomiswave board and an SNK game for half that.

They’re coming out on the PS2. And they don’t have much of an option in that. The PS3 isn’t going to be region coded, so even if they banned it, then people would just start importing full-time, and SCEA wouldn’t get any money at all.

Well I wouldn’t plop down the kind of money the new systems want on speculation of what games may come to a console. If you have a slew of games you already like for a console you can get now, do so, but if you’re waiting to see what may be the next console for fighters and don’t have a list of games you know are coming to those systems, I’d just advise saving the money and waiting till something comes out you want.

Dreamcast, PS2 are good choices for consoles that are available. PS2 probably being easier to get games for now, and getting a magic swap would allow you to play the import games as well.

He already said he doesn’t do swap magic and/or modding. Xbox is the best option.

fuck x box

dreamcast is good for mvc2 and 1. they have power stone1,2, but thats nothing to jump up and down about. a few others but nothing special

ps2 is your best option

x box has online play, but it doesnt have as many fighters as ps2. online play can suck it. unless you live in nowhere land and you have access to no real players.

i would not purchase x trash over ps2 if your looking for a system with fighters

ps2 also has the darkstalkers collection

dude. get a ps2 and close this thread

in north america the xbox has just about every 2d fighter on the ps2 thats worth having, only with the added Live play. 3d fighters on the other hand are definatly PS2’s domain.

also, saying that the dreamcast’s fighters are nothing to jump up and down about is just crazy talk

DC and ps2. Xbox if you mod it for Super Turbo perfection.

PlayStation has almost every modern and old game that matters in arcade perfect or near arcade perfect form.

GGSlash, 3s, ST (CCC2), Hyper Fighting, Most good SNK, Vampire series, CVS2, A3, A2, VF4, VF5 Tekken, etc. Shit it even has perfect Fighting Vipers and Virtua Fighter 2 ports.

The only thing its missing is Marvel. Have a DC for Marvel, old marvel, Virtua Fighter 3, SF3 Double Impact, Soul Calibur, and Virtual On.

Saturn for XSF, MSF, VFRemix (lol), obscure weirdo shit (groove on fight, etc.).

Or maybe mod an Xbox instead of having a Saturn.

I don’t mod anything, cause one I am a retard (when it comes to stuff like that, I would probably end up melting the whole damn thing and lighting the bitch on fire with some scotch), and two I am not patient enough for it. When I buy something I expect it to work out of the box without additional bullshit. So thats why I stated buying a Jap PS2 (Which has the most games at this time that I want), but the PS2 is a fading system…and I would be buying a Jap system so… I was hoping the PS3 might be backwards compatible with Jap games but that might be a stretch. I’m hoping there will be more ports to the XBOX 360, since they added Hyper fighting to Live and all. Give some 2D love.

I would like to see real evidence that the PS2 is a fading system. Where is the indication that this system doesn’t have years left in its lifespan?
