Best and Worst games based on Marvel Comics

Could someone link to a playthrough of Spiderman 2 for the PS2 on YT?
I’m interested in seeing how this game played after hearing so much about it.

Here is an example of how the game plays:

Like most games credited to LJN, they didn’t actually make this one, they just published it and slapped their logo all over it. It was actually developed by Software Creations, the same British studio that made Wolverine on NES and Arcade’s Revenge. Maximum Carnage was probably the best game they did, including its sequel, Separation Anxiety, and getting that move off where you grab two guys and butt their heads together is so satisfying. The Green Jelly soundtrack made it all the sweeter.

Finally got my hands on The Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction for the PS2 and I must say it is fun as hell! Decided to rent Spiderman Web of Shadows now, been hearing some good things for it.

Wow, I haven’t seen this thread in a minute.

I finally played X-Men: Mutant Academy for the Gameboy Color. That game requires absolutely ZERO technique, besides mashing ONLY the B button nonstop.

Anybody mention X:Men Mojo World? I think the game has its faults, more notably Rogue who totally breaks the game.

Oh boy, this thread brings back bad memories. When I was a kid the second game I ever got to buy was Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin for the Sega Master system. For those of you who don’t know, while everybody else had an SNES or Genesis(Only the cool kids could afford it and my parents would never have gotten one for me) I had the good old Sega Master. Anyways, after much begging I was able to get a second game for my system, since I already had beaten Sonic, but it had to be from the bargain bin. Being six years old, this game caught my eye with its nice front cover and I said why not. Big mistake! For those of you who don’t know, try explaining this to a six year old as the first sequence of the game:

Needless to say, I was so sad. I had begged for months for a new game and this is what I ended up with. I did manage to get to the second part of the game, but I got my mom to return it for me. I ended up getting some game with a couple of other mini games like Arkanoid all in one.

Looking back, it brings a tear to my eye. I grew up with very few games and now I have all three next gen consolses that I barely play. I guess maybe one of these days I should go back and beat that bloody Spider-Man game.

X-Men Destiny is one of the worst RPGs this console generation. So much lost potential in that game.

I so hear you, man.

I barely had any games growing up, either. I only got a game for my birthday OR Christmas, though mostly, my dad thought video games were a waste of my time. It is bittersweet to realize how much easier it is to acquire games as an adult.

Back on topic, I recently picked up X-Men: Mutant Academy 2 for PS1. It’s a pretty decent fighter, IMO. Activision also attempted to recreate the gameplay from Capcom’s VS. titles, with launchers and Air Combos being possible to perform.

Man these games bring up so many memories. Personally I think they need to be divided into categories for each character though but then again that would have us here all day I guess.

As of late I can’t think of anything worth while. Amazing Spidey looks like it will be pretty good if not great. It’s being made by the same guys that did Shattered/Dimensions and they are putting a sandbox feel on it. I think they have what it takes. I think X-Men titles peeked at Legends but the old games are just as fun with the exception of a few like Wolverine for NES and Spiderman/X-men Arcades Revenge, for example. I’ve always loved the Xmen arcade game in all its glory and many ports.

I never could beat Cap and the Avengers but it was fun as well. See now I have to go back and look up all the games that aren’t fighters that I’ve played to make a list.

^That right there is it. Look up any Marvel games that they put their filthy dick grabbers on, and you’ll have your list.

Good to see you like X-men Mutant Academy 2 for PS1! It really is pretty decent. The game does feel a little rough in places, but it is still great to play. It is cool that Spider-Man made a guest appearance. Plus this is one of the few games where you can play as Prof X himself ramming people with his wheel chair. That only is totally worth it ^_^!

Interesting, divide the list of best and worst by character? I could do that if you all think that would help out a bit.

how did it take 59 posts for this?!?!?!

LOL, I’m sure many know that MVC2 is really good. Matter of fact, I’ve just gotten back into it as well.

I just noticed that I made my list of best and worst Marvel games before playing Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. I have purchased the game since I made said list, and I must say that it’s definitely one of the better Marvel games I’ve ever played.

Infinity gem series games are certainly awesome:
-Marvel Superheroes (CPS2)
-Marvel Superheroes: War of the Gems

I’m undecided on whether Spiderman Separation Anxiety for the SNES is actually a good game, or if my childhood nostalgia blinds me

I enjoyed Maximum Carnage on Genesis/SNES. Great music, slick presentation, and gameplay in that one.

X-Men Mutant apocalypse was an A+ title also.

The SNES Captain America and the Avengers? By gawd that port S-U-C-K-E-D! It didn’t represent the fantastic Data East Arcade game at all.

The Sega Genesis version was better but still ended up crappy also. Both systems were capable of way better, and this game is a good example of developers not giving a damn about putting together a proper arcade port.

Yup i loved that one. The game based on the 2nd spider-man movie on PS2 was also surprisingly well don also.

I regret not playing through that one completely, because at the time the PS2 port of Resident Evil 4 had landed and i got sucked in.

That beat’em up was good, but Konami’s X-Men Arcade was way better.

Arcade’s revenge was fun with nice graphics & music(both ports), but the unreasonable difficulty just kills it i’m sorry to say…

Even when cheating that game is a pain in the ass to get through.

I give it a pass, there are plenty of far worse games out there but that difficulty makes it low-tier.

The reason why the Genesis port turned out as well as it did was because Data East made it. As for the SNES, they outsourced the development of that port to Mindscape. That’s still no fucking excuse for how that game got fucked up so badly. With retro video game reviews being all the rage these days, I’m surprised anyone has yet to rip that shit a new one!

I also forgot to mention Maximum Carnage. Both the SNES and Genesis versions were must-buy titles, but the SNES version had superior music.

Eh Data East is also guilty of lousy effort. After the Golden axe series, streets of rage, Comix Zone, Majin saga, etc. The system was easily capable of a higher quality port.

Perhaps i’m being a bit hard on it though, it is at least PLAYABLE unlike the SNES version.

Well SNES had more advanced audio so thats a given. Unless you’re saying the music was actually different.

True, the Genesis version could have been much better, no argument there. However, at least the enemies didn’t have absurdly long invincibility frames or could knock you to the ground with the simplest attacks.

Of course I was referring to the superior audio hardware in the SNES. I would have specified, but I figured it was a given since I was talking about Maximum Carnage.
