If it’s made by Capcom or Konami, it’s usually pretty decent, sometimes excellent.
If it’s made by any other company it’s usually medicore.
Pretty much sums it up.
I really fucking hope noone has listed MVC2/3 in the ‘best’ category.
Sigh.
Here’s my picks based on the games I’ve actually played…
BEST
X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse (SNES)
X-Men 2: Clone Wars (Genesis)
X-Men (Arcade beat-em-up by Konami)
Spider-Man (Arcade beat-em-up by Sega)
Punisher (Arcade beat-em-up by Capcom… Genesis port was okay too)
Captain America and the Avengers (Arcade beat-em-up by Data East… Genesis version is passable)
Spider-Man (PSX)
Spider-Man 2: The Game (PS2, NGC, XBOX, and PC)EDIT Apparently, the PC version was different from the console versions and it was a kiddy game.
Ultimate Spider-Man (PS2, NGC, and XBOX)
Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction (PS2, NGC, and XBOX)
Any Marvel-based fighting game made by Capcom
WORST
Uncanny X-Men (NES)
Wolverine (NES)
Spider-Man and X-Men: Arcade’s Revenge (SNES and Genesis)
Captain America and the Avengers (SNES port… NO FUCKING EXCUSE)
Silver Surfer (NES)
Basically any Marvel game made by LJN
I was worried I’d be too avant-garde for some of you.
Man, I know some people mentioned it, but X-Men for the Genesis was seriously the shit back in the day. I was so hype to get it when I finally got a Genesis in late '93. I never got around to playing 2 beyond at the TRU kiosk.
Uncanny X-Men for the NES. I learned it existed well after it came out. I thought it would be a pretty good port of a much better arcade game, ala TMNT II. I’d go to the flea market every week and ask the video game guy if he had it. He never did. Fucking ever.
My friend got it. So jealous. I went to his place to try it. “…This sucks!” You got that right, Little Vinnie.
Best: VS series, X-men (arcade; Genesis)
Worst: Childhood disappointment.
SpiderMan Maximum Carnage for snes
Has anyone tried out the DS Thor game recently released? I might check it out, 2D beat-em-up goodness oh yeah!
A good bit around like to whine and hate on comic book games, but they’ve had some damn good ones over the years.
Captain America and the Avengers Arcade was always awesome. Excellent 2D graphics for its time, good music, beat’em up gameplay, and neat voice-overs. Stay away from those horrid console versions though, talk about LAZY efforts by game developers.
One that might be underrated: The first movie(Ang lee) Hulk game for PS2. The stealth missions were weird and out of place, but the beat’em up action was solid. Was decent.
The only Thor game worth buying.

I loved Ultimate Alliance and Ultimate Spider Man personally.
UA2 was alright but they tried to hard I felt.
The 6-player X-Men arcade game was definitely one of the best. I’d play Colossus just to do his ROOOAGH!! Mutant Apocalypse is also another beauty. Great graphics for the SNES with pretty fun gameplay and a satisfying level of difficulty.
Worst has to be X-Men on NES. I rented it when I was little, and FUUUUCK I hated it so much. I kept screaming “Why are the melee characters so bad!!!” at the TV…
I loved the X-Men Legends games, even though I was never able to beat the second one. Ultimate Spider-man and Spider-man: Maximum Carnage were really good as well. I think the PS1 Spider-man game is very underrated as well.
Ones that I hated where Spider-man/X-men Arcade’s Revenge and Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects. Good lord that was a terrible game.
LJN made at least 1 good game spider man maximum carnage
Best - X-Men Origins:Wolverine
Worst - Arcade’s Revenge
That is without a doubt the best sound from any video game ever hahaha
Spider Man and X Men: Arcade’s Revenge
Fucking loved that game.
its funny cause anytime someone imitates it…even if it has no meaning to our conversation i know exactly what he’s referencing.
The Colossus sound was my squad’s official motto back in the Army. Good times.
same here hahahaha
