Best 46 inch LCD for gaming?

Right now my main candidates are the Samsung UN46B8000 or LN46A860 or Sony KDL-46XBR9 .

I am going to be playing both dreamcast and PS3 probably so the lag based on SDTV and HDTV are both important to me. My understanding is that the 120hz and 240hz cause lag possibly due to the upscaling?

Or please recommend the best 40 or 46 inch TV for gaming, I believe i want a LCD, thanks in advance!

Sony’s have absolutely horrible lag in general. Nice for HD movies, but I would never get one for gaming. There’s just so much processing shenanigans going on before the picture gets displayed. I haven’t seen every Sony out there though so there might be one with very little lag, but I doubt it.

actually, the hz does not cause lag. plasmas have 600 hz and some of the best ones (kuro) have no lag. I would suggest you look at Avsforum.com. They have sections for LCDs, OLEDs, Plasmas, and LED TVs. I personally love samsungs LED lineup. The 7 or 8 series are outstanding. In addition, while gaming, using VGA will eliminate a lot of lag and input timing. Some TVs even have game mode they will also cut lag time.

Do you know where I can find specifics on that information? I actually posted @ avforums first before coming here because they weren’t very informative on gaming.

100hz is enough for gaming unless you want to play Bluray/HD movies. PS3 only supports 60Hz and you dont need 200Hz just to play games. I have 40" Sony XBR 40X3100 which works like charm.I would personally recommend you to go for Sony XBR series or Samsung 7/8 Series

Yeah, XBRs and the 7/8/9 series are the top LCD TVs in the market. I think the 120/240 hz is more geared towards blu rays. Since the hz is 24, it isnt divisible by 60. So, 120 (24x5) and 240 (24x10) makes the video PQ better or something along those lines lol.

I think this thread would be a good read:http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=558125

Hope it helps!!

120/240hz is ideally for sports since action and camera are moving so quick which causes motion blur that you see on lcd. I have an 8 series and game mode seems to be good for me. I havent tried the PC mode that has been posted which supposedly reduces lag even more but you lose picture quality from what i hear.

Ive used game mode for shooters (halo, cod, etc) and it does reduce lag. As you stated, the PQ drops drastically since you lose all the calibrating options

But going back to the original question. I’d do the A860 or a850 pretty much the same. Or if you wanna save money i’m pretty sure a650/750 also have the same picture/video quality just the 8 is super thin.

I’m looking for an HDTV that does not cause lag for fighting games on any console. Is that possible?

If you do the PC mode on the Samsung LCD it gets close to the numbers that VGA produces. The samsung a950 is what I’d pick up if you are not worried about money. Otherwise the 3 i mentioned earlier get you pretty close. a650,a750, and a850

Keep in mind that when using PC mode, adjustment settings will also be removed, so to sum things up, to elminate the majority of lag, one will have to sacrifice picture quality (which isnt that much in my honest opinion). And if all else fails, simply hook up your console via vga port.

Is there a Canadian/North American version of the LE40N87BDX or should i just start looking at Sony XBR’s. sorry to piggy back the thread but I was hoping there might be some NA experts out there too. Looking for around a 40", LCD obviously.

how does the a950 compare with the Samsung UN46B8000? The latter certainly looks better. Samsung USA removed the a950 from their site which is the reason I didn’t ask about it, I got tricked.

I’ve only had chance to see the a950 havent seen any of the new LEDs yet. But I have read the comparisons for both on avs. I believe they still think a950 is a notch above but the b8000 had bang for it’s buck.

So the gamemode in my sammy 65f through hdmi will make more or less lag? and I should turn off all stuff like edge enhancements? does dynamic lighting and contrast affect the lag also?

Game mode reduces lag, you shouldnt need to make any adjustments.

THe A models were last years’ LCD models. THe 46B8000 lineup is for this year, they upped the contrast ratio, added 240hz and and uses LED technology. I would get the 46B8000, its the new LED TV, has 5,000,000 to 1 contrast and 240 hz. Not to mention, it uses less power and is very slim compared to the a950

I understand but I’m more concerned with it’s gaming properties. I’d prefer a better looking screen for movies but that is secondary…game mode with Dreamcast and PS3 is most important to me

I just bought this 46inch Sharp Aquos 60hz. I fkn love it. It has a game mode. 4ms response time. I can definetly tell a difference between my 23 inch samsung and this one. My samsung 23inch LCD lags even on gamemode when I play sf4 and I never knew it until I got this one. It’s 1080p of course and great price. The game looks great. it’s a 4.5 out of 5
