You’re obviously on the wrong diet bro if it’s telling you to cut beer.
Never had Gulden Draak but I love high ABV beer. Anything Mikkeller is good pretty much but the Black Imperial Stout is crazy, 15.7% but still full of depth and flavor.
I’m a huge beer nerd, and have a policy of always trying new beers if I get the opportunity (if they’re good, then great! If not, they have alcohol in them, so np). I like a pretty wide spectrum of beer types, but I have an inclination towards darker beer types (Porter, Stout, Münchener, etc).
I’m more of a hard cider man myself but on the rare occasions i do drink beer i enjoy sours and fruit infused beer.
I did a diet similar to paleo for about 6 months it was
no red meat
no pork
no gluten/wheat
no dairy (except greek yogurt)
nothing carbonated
no sugar
under 1000 calories a day.
it sucked (and as expensive as fuck). but i lost like 50 pounds in 2 months.
Yea I’m currently in the middle of a diet that doesn’t allow for vodka… I didn’t realize how much I miss drinking at social gatherings until it was gone.
Germany reporting in o/
Don’t drink any wine or stuff with >15%, raaarely a beer with ~13%. It’s just not my thingy and I had my fair share of vodka at school/university parties. No thank you.
Pils is my jam with the Trappist beer every now and then. It’s good to have Belgium as a neighbour.
I mostly love the stuff from local breweries with history you can’t find in the average supermarket, don’t know how popular/well known “bock” is in other countries.
Doppelbock is already up to 12%, but there’s triple and quad, too. Bad stuff.
I mostly love IPAs, Lambics, I’ve had a bit of a thing for fruit beer recently. I’ve drank the whole spectrum though, I’ve had some crazy beers in the past.
One of my favourites lately is Ballast Point. The Watermelon Dorado man… it’s crazy. Have it with some fried shrimp and chilli, you’ll thank me later.
Nøgne Ø’s Dark Horizon series are some really fucking great “dinosaurs”. 4th Edition slightly less so than the others, but still really damn good.
At lower alcohol percentages it’s probably Erdinger Dunkelweiss.
I consistently dislike the big trends among the hipsters when it comes to beer. Whoever was responsible for the “let’s get the IBU as high as possible because super-bitter beer is manly”-dick-waving-contest amongst brewers about 5 years ago, deserves to have their throats jammed with hops until they beg for mercy. Not only because it ruined the beers but because everyone only made IPAs and it was boring*. Sour beers are also really getting traction in Norway right now, which, again, isn’t really my subtype. Typical =V
What brewery was responsible for Ballast Point? I might look for it if the local Wine Monopoly has it.
okay, to be fair, a lot of this was because a lot of the homebrewers were inexperienced, and IPAs make it easy to mask your mistakes so it’s a good beer to start to brew if you’re a rookie
See it’s all about the food pairings a lot of the time man, like I really love super bitter beer, not because it’s manly but just because it balances the acidity of dishes cram full of stuff like chilli, lime and vinegars. Really it depends what you eat, like I eat a lot of Indian and Thai food because the first is my weakness and the second is my partner and we both also like Mediterranean dishes, like you take an Andalusian seafood paella man and even though the Spanish are more wine or gin and tonic that shit goes off with an IPA.
It also just happens that I love the flavor of hops. Sierra Nevada do some great, drinkable IPAs, their Torpedo is the bomb man and it comes in a pint sized can.
Ballast Point is the name of a brewer, it was responsible for putting San Diego on the map for beer. Sculpin is their big award winner but they have a bunch of good beers that have taken medals home. I’m not huge on porters but theirs is quite nice.
Honestly as a non-American for the longest time Rogue Ales was the only real American brewery with visibility and credibility at bars stocking micro stuff. Like everyone at places like that has had a Sail and Anchor or a Samuel Adams but that shit doesn’t excite anyone. California has really stepped it up with brewers like Sierra Nevada and Ballast Point.
If youre a stout/porter kinda guy, treat yourself to a trappiste Rochefort 10. It’s the best stout I’ve ever had, and I’ve had many, MANY stouts. They also come in variations of 8 and 12 but 10 is the best IMO
That depends heavily on the beer and the food. The simple rule of thumb is the darker the meat, the darker the beer. There are clear exceptions, of course, and a good but simple pale ale tends to work with most things.
Oh, and if you want something to drink with your dessert, I recommend trying a bock. Ice cream and bock is a killer combo.
