Am guessing making a legit Flash movie is too hard for hollywood. Batman is a brooding antihero type guy who doesnt kill… Superman is a faggot in cape with plot amour.
Flash, well hes too quick and too OP, all the characters that protrayed Flash are generally good down to every everyguys. He has no downsides and can fuck anybody up he chooses even without the crazy top tier wally west speed force powers. Nobody wants to watch a 90min flick of a scientist who whips the shit out of everybody wearing a frictionless spandex costume.
the flash could be done. flash vs zoom, and let the hollywood superhero powers limiter loose a bit, and let these characters just go at it. id say graze over the origin story a bit in the first 15, and just kinda get right into it. i would imagine a flash movie lasting about an hour and 40 minutes. just filled with action and fun. unfortunately they would probably get some writers and a director to take flash too seriously, or not serious enough, and it would end up as shit.
is it stupid to ask for joss whedon to write it, and zack snyder to direct? i actually like snyders movies, and i think sucker punch is underrated. i think a flash movie could be one hell of a spectacle if done right and the right people put behind it.
Superman doesn’t need plot armor. When you can go anywhere, do anything, and can’t be hurt by anything short of an unconventional weapon, you have a very good in-universe reason for getting through most of your battles. Plot armor is when you don’t have that reason.
i liked the superman as captain marvel and batman as hawkman siwtcharoo. granted, that was in an awful loeb book, but it was also animated so there’s that i guess.
yeah, pretty much anytime lex puts on the fucking robot suit (not saying that it was fine until then) i’d say the same thing. aka, “we need money let’s make some bullshit, throw some dudes in, and have lex be iron man.”
Here’s my advice for accomplishing standalone movies for Diana and the Flash: look to JL/JLU. Those are excellent screen adaptations of these characters. They’re mostly faithful to the spirit of the comics, while still resolving their many different interpretations of the characters over the years. Hell, maybe even get some of the DCAU guys on board for creative consultation.
Do a Flash movie. Make it snarky, but warm-hearted, like the Flash in the cartoon. Do a Wonder Woman movie. Make it more of an urban fantasy adventure story than a superhero story, like Diana in the cartoon.
One thing that baffles me endlessly about the superhero movies is their apparent unwillingness to look to previous stories that stand the test of time–or, in the case of Man of Steel, to give lip service to those stories while bullheadedly insisting on doing their own thing that pales in comparison.
Agreed, the way they handled Flash in those series is a PERFECT springboard. He was cocky without being a jerk (my feeling on Barry Allen), and just emotional and down to earth enough to remind me of Wally West, without coming off as…well Drake (sorry Wally felt like a cry baby to me at least pre-speed force). He was also top tier without feeling ‘broken’ - he seemed like he ‘belonged’ with the rest of the team.
People get too enamored with making it ‘their version’ of a character as opposed to ‘the best version’.
Yeah, I just watched that, actually. They came up with a strong, sophisticated telling of an origin story that (I know I’m not imagining this) is kind of a hard sell with today’s audiences. Not a bad little movie.
One of the best animated fight scenes in a DC movie is Barda and WW vs The Female Furies. There’s a point in the fight where WW uses her lasso to counter this one broad’s whip. And the fluidity in they way its animated made me rewind it several times. The whole scene is excellent. Outside of maybe Avatar I don’t think I’ve seen human movement done that well.
are we speaking purely american animation or all…including anime? i seem to remember a dope scene in the ww movie involving suplexes.
First thing I think you are glossing over in Jerry’s criticism of the movie is that its petty clear he’s not speaking from a lore perspective he’s speaking from an art perspective. Notice how he doesn’t say anything related to the lore and specifically speaks to it a failure in character study. Superman is one of the greatest movies of all time. Not just one of the greatest Superhero movies of all time but one of the greatest movies period.
Aside from the way it was masterfully shot and edited was the great acting. If you didn’t know the lore of Superman and lived in that world you might be fooled by the disguise of Clark Kent. Christopher Reeves did an amazing job Superman shared no body language posture or voice tonal traits with his alter Ego. Lois Lane and Lex both had awesome supporting roles as well. None of the actors got to show their stuff in this new movie, save for Michael Shannon and even then I’m not sure, if I weren’t already familiar with the intricacies of the Zod, character if his performance really stood on its own as it should have. Shit if you wanna talk about emo this Superman is at least 2x as emo as returns supes.
The updated action was welcome but it really did take away from the film making and story aspect of it. It was like a 2 hour long circle jerk “oh your the one superman your gonna be so special” “bah I let my dad get killed cause he wanted too I cant be myself bahh” Russel Crowe “Nigga put this suit on and lets get money” now Zod conveniently shows up and superman gets an excuse to punch shit.
Weak.
You want a crazy show of power in your superman story go for All star superman, death and return, one of his arcs with mongul or darkseid. Don’t do that to the origin the origin is all about establishing character and this movie completely failed to develop Superman as a character. Sure we saw a dude and he was Superman and he made some morally correct decisions but it was all vision, idolatry, allusion and no weight.
On WW, Dissapointed ever sense I saw the casting, A FF actor really? They get Affleck who like it or not is proven in his art form, Cavil who has nice credentials, Amy Adams, and Laurence Fisbourne then get a FF girl to do WW of all roles. It was just never a good omen I expect them to completely miss the point of this character as well. Making her a kryptonian would really only be icing on the cake
On Flash i always thought he’s better material for a tv show than anything. Hell 90% of the time in Smallville Super Speed was Clarks go to it just seems to be a powerset that works for the small screen.
Jerry Seinfeld had Patton Oswalt on his most recent episode of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee. Superman came up and Patton pitched his idea for a Superman story, which sounded an awful lot like All Star Superman.
