Batman/Superman movie announced for 2016

Angry Joe is pretty fucking awful though.

It’s still interesting to me that this Lex made it to the screen. Seriously, what happened? The last debates here ended talking about how Superman wasn’t Superman, but Lex does way more damage overall. Everything is off, from his character to his motivations to his actions based on those motivations. I heard Eisenberg didn’t even see the movie. He says it’s because he lives in a bubble, but I think deep down he knows…

Well he’s not Luthor so no one can really complain about him being OOC.

Being Lex JR doesn’t make things better. He is the Luthor we get as Superman’s nemesis not his pops.

No duh. But you cant accuse him of being OOC like you can with Supes because hes not Luthor. You can only accuse him of being awful.

I don’t buy that. We don’t even know if Papa Luthor is the Luthor we all know and love. His pops never been essential to Lex outside of Smallville.

You can’t make that accusation until you see his dad be OOC. Until then you’ve got nothing. Stick to criticizing actual legit points.

Don’t blame Eisenberg. Blame Snyder. Eisenberg didn’t even intend to play Luthor. He was auditioning for Jimmy Olsen. I just want to do this to Snyder.

I know that. I linked to that article. I don’t blame Eisenberg, even though Snyder molded this new Luthor off of him after a meeting. It’s just that I don’t believe dude hasn’t heard ANYTHING about his performance in BvS.

I don’t really buy that. They’re clearly trying to invoke Lex even if this is supposed to be a different dude. Billionaire with an abusive childhood who hates Superman because Supes’ power bruises his ego. Also, if Lex’s name had any pull, they were using that pull. They weren’t trying to get you in the theater to see “Alexander” Luthor be a villain to Superman. This is a different dude, but he’s different in the way The Dark Knight’s Joker was different from all the other Jokers. It’s still Lex, and a shitty one at that.

It’s a shame though, because if this Luthor wasn’t established, they could have built him up. Given him a GOOD reason to hate Superman. Not this crap we got.

The problem was Luthor had no reason to hate Superman. Hell, he should be thanking him as Luthor stated early in the film he got all the contracts to rebuild the city after Supes and Zod wrecked the place. He probably owns 3/4 of Metropolis now thanks to Supes.

Oh, he had a reason. It was just retarded. It was some yammering near the end about how you can’t be a God and be all good. Also, his dad beat him when he was a kid.

It would have been cool to see him actually like Superman to start with, but have something bring him over to the dark side by the end of the movie.

eisenberg’s character arc was pretty jarring, just as much as the whole movie was. pathetic.

What character Arc? He had no motivation to do most of the things he did.

well, there was the annoying first act then the ho-hum middle and the psycho turn near the end (plus drool and other bodily fluids) which was the nail in the coffin for me.

confusing af would be an understatement, lolol

Lex luthor has never had complex reasons for hating superman in the comics. He is always just been jealous, and an ego maniac. Thats literally exactly lex jr’s motivation in the movie. Its pretty obvious without having to hold everyones hand through every step as to why he hates superman.

  1. Superman is essentially a god. Lex is jealous of his power. Lex doesnt have such power, and has no idea how to even create such power.
  2. Lex is aware of all the other metahumans, which again, makes him more jealous and afraid of who these people are.
  3. Lex jr has only gained power through hand me downs from his father. Again, that jealousy of those who didnt have to have daddy hand them their achievements.
  4. Lex is a typical ego maniac. He hates the idea that people worship superman like an infallible god. Hence why he cant stop making religious metaphors about superman throughout the whole movie. He essentially blew up the capital building because he couldnt get what he wanted. Hes sociopathic, needy, brat who misses his daddy.

The movie makes it pretty clear what lex’s motivations are. Theyre literally the exact same motivations as lex in the comics, but with less time to flesh them out through extensive dialogue. The only other addition that couldve made it a little more clear for movie goers is showing an interaction with lex luthor and lex jr. Something that belittles lex jr, and creates this chip on his shoulder. Some moment in the movie where you see why lex jr is the way he is.

Again though, its not really necessary to spend that much time character developing lex jr. You get the gist of it pretty easily from what they do give us.

Movie just isnt fresh in a lot of you guys memory right now, but they did enough of lex jr’s motivations, and his character personality in general.

I liked Eisenberg as Lex Luthor.

Lex does have complex motivations I suggest you read Lex Luthor: Man of Steel. It covers Lex perception of Superman extremely well. His motivation against Supes can be personal if their history with each other as teenagers in Smallville is used from the old Superboy stories.

All we get from this movie is that Lex daddy use to beat him and wants to compare Superman to God. Even when Lex motive was jealousy it was because Supes stole his thunder as the city’s “Savior”. In Lex mind he’s the Superman that Metropolis needs.

The thing is, he has NO reason to hate Superman other than he’s an egomaniac in this movie. In the comics, Lex started at the bottom and became top dog in Metropolis until Superman came along. It was screwing with him that he had to do all this work to get where he was, but Superman just comes along and takes all the glory. He also had shady deals Superman was wrecking. This Lex has nothing we see that Superman really screwed up for him. Even for a comic book movie where you have to walk in knowing the characters a little, there’s not even a little bit of establishment that Superman hurt Lex’s rep or company at all. Hell, Superman’s wrecking of Metropolis in MoS actually seems to have put money in his pocket. He’s just here and ready to kill Superman because ego.

Also, we know all this stuff because we know the character a little. People who don’t know would probably be confused until they hit up Wikipedia after the movie.

In the post-crisis era/Byrne’s reboot, once Luthor knows about Superman he tries to “hire” him, gets turned down obviously which leads into Luthor not accepting anyone not willing to work for him (“I control Metropolis”).

What kinda bothered me on MoS/BvS (among other things) is that in the comics, Luthor was the first one to find out that Superman is an alien (check Man of Steel #4) and while he learned that Clark Kent/Superman were the same person (through an investigator), he refused to think that an all mighty, super powerful being would disguise himself as a middle class man. He then ordered to destroy all the info related to that discovery and fired Amanda (the investigator iirc, she then stole the kryptonite ring that led Batman to find it on Gotham, one of the first Batman/Superman crossovers I remember-I’m talking about post-crisis era btw).

As stated here by many people over different topics, everything seemed too rushed in this movie: motivations, relationships, villains, events, JLA stuff, etc.

(this is still better than Daredevil though, anyone who disagrees please tell me with an honest face you didn’t think Elektra’s line when facing Daredevil “LIAR!” is the worst delivered line in comic book history)

You suggest i read one story to back up your claim? Lex’s motivation has always been fairly simple regardless. You want lex jr’s reason for superman not liking him in a 2 and a half hour movie, compared to a comic to be fully fleshed out?

I mean i get it. Its the reason why people said too much was going on, but to be honest, im not sure if they fleshed out lex jr’s story, anyone would fucking care, or it would change their opinion of the movie. If lex was fully fleshed out, would that really have changed your opinion?

I think snyder realized this isnt about lex jr. Hes just essentially a goon to deal with, that ties the plot together in a way, but hes not suppose to be a character you give a shit about. I understand that the legacy of lex luthor is trill as fuck, so thats unacceptable for many, regardless of if he is jr lex. But thats a different argument. **If you wanna argue they couldve did more to flesh out lex jr, and not make him a side bitch, well thats different. If we’re just arguing what og lex is mad at superman for, well again, its usually fairly simple, and thats not gonna be fleshed out in his sons story in BvS. **
