The movies are just getting around to doing what the big publishing houses have been doing for all these years to hold themselves back from legitimacy and respect in the eyes of the public. They take a couple more or less uncalculated risks, then as soon as one of them pays dividends, they flog the horse until it’s long dead.
The basic fact is, the people who care about promoting comics and getting them accepted as an art form are the creative people, not the money people. Don’t expect this to change. Not now, maybe not ever.
I just want comics to be appreciated by the mainstream…is that so much to ask for.
Like fuck video games got accepted and all other previously shunned geek things got accepted yet comics still got dat stigma. I don’t know who to blame but I blame mostly Hollywood.
These movies never increased comic book readership. Trace the comic book sales of those characters during a movie year. They will flood the market with a ton of minis and trade collections involving them but they won’t be flying off the shelf. Comics are continue to be a niche medium so long as their availability remains limited.
Over 30,000 signatures now for what its worth. Clearly this not some isolated incident over the net and just the ramblings of a few nerds. A small fraction of the majority, that are aware of the petition, clearly think this is a bad idea.
And for those talking about Heath Ledger comparison?
#1- Ledger had greater acting range and #2- A stellar director to bring it all out and #3- the backlash was never remotely this great. With ledger it was more like heavy skepticism. With Affleck? Its pretty decisive.
As for Affleck? Him essentially cos-playing as Daredevil. Horrible.
