Baroque Art: Time To Get Fancy!

I’ll start with works by Bernini.

The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa.

David.

I guess the Baroque era is the largest influence on the visual style of the Castlevania series. Pretty cool, right? :sunglasses:

The emphasis on Baroque sculpture is to make the the sculpture appear as if it is moving. Kinetics seem to be super important in these works, you can easily see the tension before and after these depictions.

Divine.

???

you’re a weird guy to want discussions on baroque art.

Bernini’s David is my fav.
Michelangelo’s is cool. and Donatello’s is gay.
but Bernini’s is bad ass.

what are you tryin? to discuss Castlevania’s artistic influence? why not talk about Art direction in games and not about art in general.

It can evolve to whatever, GD is full of nonsense so i don’t see why this can’t be here.

I would put an image up of one of my favorite sculptures by Donatello, but that isn’t from the Baroque period.

Which of [S]Mike’s[/S] Donatello’s Davids are you talking about? This one?

Or this one?

If it’s the second one there is a reason you think it’s gay.

Some people argue that David looks so feminine in the statue is to convey that he was transitioning from childhood to adolescence, hence the girly figure and posture.

That’s Goliath’s head he’s standing on by the way, so he’s not that damn girly. :sunglasses:

Damn, this is the last thing I expected to pop up here. But hey, Baroque period artwork is badass so I welcome this.

Edit: The first thing that comes to mind when I see the first sculpture is the chapel music from Symphony of the Night. Imagine that!

Shit is awesome.

Thread theme.

Listen to that third song and see if you don’t imagine that angel stabbing the shit out of Saint Teresa.

Starting at 1:17 in the first video, that synth reminds me SO MUCH of the dungeon theme from A Link To The Past.

I don’t give a shit what anyone says but I liked Curse of Darkness. But because music was brought up I’m going to post what I think is one of the best tracks from my personal favorite game of the series.

Supposedly Donatello’s David sculpture resembles an adolescent De’Vinci.

Hey, Havatchu, I thought those Davids you posted there were Donatello’s? Maybe I got them mixed up.

Edit: If I choose to trust Wikipedia enough anyway. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_(Donatello)

…If it ain’t Baroque…

(ROFLMAO!!!)

Ah, you are correct. I was still thinking of Axl’s post a little too much. He mentioned Mikey.

Fuck it, I’m putting this here because it’s Donnies and I love it.

Fairly certain this is from the Renaissance Era. St. Mark.^

Annnnd some realism, just because.

Thomas Eakins’ The Gross Clinic.

A very empowering piece that showcases the potential of human intellect in an age where modern medicine was just beginning.

And do make up for all that non-Baroque work…some Baroque work…I think…

Awesome. I know nothing about art. But thanks!

No problem man.

I’ve only taken a few humanites, art, and philosophy courses myself. So I’m no expert either. I just like to share what I enjoy.

You guys need to get on that Caravaggio

Chiaroscuro like a boss. he also didn’t play on figure characterization. No generic faces in his work.

Here’s mine:

Look at the colours on Batsu. So pretty.

Haha, I saw that in a gameplay vid, BAROQUE, I mean, and I was like, no way!

@Kanta-Kun: I haven’t looked into him too much, and for some reason I think there’s a table in every one of his works…

His lighting technique is always interesting though.

Wattup with that Doubting Thomas.

I think in SRK you’d have more luck reppin the Rococo period lol, ye olde Brazzers status. Nothin but paintings and sculptures of rich folks that are down to fuck.

I feel you. Fun fact, baroque means rough or imperfect pearl. It started from Portuguese and Spanish asbarroco and transitioned to baroque in French.

Funny how Rococo is basically an offshoot of Baroque.

Edit: The sound people most associate with Baroque without even knowing it is the sound of a harpsichord.

Also, a clavichord.

Fortepiano.

And of course the organ.

Those are just the keyboards.

Weird, a serpent…the horn in here. Very soft sounding.

Funniest cd cover ever by the way here. Considering the context.

Alpha 3 announcer: “You can’t give it up! Go for Baroque!”

baroque art is really cool.

the second bronze one of course.
its the floral sun hat that was the conceptual mistake.
yeah, i said it, the great artist Donatello made a mistake.

the floral or laurel imbedded hat is way too girly & sissy. doesn’t match up with the grotesqueness of the scenario.

plus its fruity.

also, if this thread was titled THE VISUAL ARTS THREAD…it woulda been better since to restrict it to somethin like Baroque thats a dead art is gonna hold conversations back some.

thats the whole point of calling the science thread, and the math thread, the cooking thread, exactly that and not-
the french cuisine thread, the calculas thread, the astro physics thread.

:sunglasses:
just sayin
