Balrog (Boxer) Beginner's Guide

i do that with supers a lot

Just a quick newbie question, not really Balrog-related: Is there something… special about Ryu’s throw compared to other throws? Is it faster, or has greater range or something? I keep getting thrown by Ryu players in situations where I’m positive I should be able to beat/avoid it. I had assumed that all normal throws were created equal. Is this wrong?

All throws are equal in the sense that they come out in 3 frames (barring command throws obviously) but they do vary in damage according to each character I believe.

… except for Gouken’s back throw. It comes out in 5 frames and has some weird issues that make the throw tech timing a bit strange.

Characters also can have kara throws (which come out 1 frame slower and have more range). Ken has the largest kara, and several other characters have one also (some have backward kara’s :looney:). But yeah, Ryu has a kara throw. Rainscape also mentioned Gouken’s weird backgrab.

Also, Gvic, what do you mean by “beat” the throw? Don’t tell me you’re trying to mash jab… I see this “mash jab” strategy everywhere in the Rog forum (even in the stickies, like the matchup thread!). Okay, so the downside for this “mash jab” strategy is that you can get hit/thrown in the startup frames of the jab. You might be saying, “Rog’s cr. lp comes out in 3 frames which is the same as a throw.” Well, even if you initiate the jab on the exact same frame as your opponent’s throw, the throw will win. And you have to consider what frame advantage your opponent is at. If they do a cr. jab or anything else that gives a lot of frame advantage, they could EASILY grab you out of your jab.

So, my advice would be to try crouch teching and backdashing more. Watch out because these two are still vulnerable to counterhit set ups or srk fadc and such. There is never a strategy that will win in every situation, so you have to adapt to each situation, so mix up your defense!

Hi,

I have problems to do this combo more than 50% of the time, and I am interested to known the better or the correct way to do it, I am not sure why sometimes works and sometimes does not.

j = jump
c = crough

j.rh,c.mp ~~ HB
or
j.f,c.mp ~~ HB

I was trying to do using chain method and link method with the same results.

Any idea?

Thx

You have to delay the c.mp in order to have enough charge for the HB. Even if you hold down-back right after you jumped. Also try to hit the j.rh/j.f as late as possible to give you more frames to link the delayed c.mp.

Thanks, I will try it this night.

Muito oubrigado :wink:

I have a problem with my execution on ex rush upper (b,f KK) after doing a S.RH,C.SK for some reason. I always accidentally do a ex low smash (b,df KK). The weird thing is that I can do ex rush upper raw 100% with a down charge. Even if I change the combo to C.Mk,C.SK xx Ex Rush upper that comes out 100% too. So I am doing something weird with my motion when I charge after a S.RH

I use a TE stick. Is it just because sanwa square gate hates me?

i have the exact same problem (i also nail c.mk c.lk ex.upper 100% but miss the s.rh c.lk ex.upper).

i’ve mostly switched to s.rh, s.lp, ex.upper on characters it works for (sagat, balrog, shotos, off the top of my head). looking at the input display, it’s because i always roll the stick to up-forward and hit the down-forward position on the way there. sucks! it must be something to do with going quickly from back to down-back to up-forward. no idea.

btw i thought you only played honda?

Yeah when I look at the inputs closely it seems that I press the kicks before I complete the motion. I play many characters but I counter pick alot too.

you gotta remember that smash has a higher input priority than upper, so you actually have to avoid down-forward altogether during the motion.

I’m having trouble with overhead c.j headbutt ultra. What is the proper way to set up this charge? I can do the BnB’s just fine, but i need this for a mixup. The Headbutt seems to come out pretty easily, but i can’t hold charge for the ultra.

First, do cr. lk instead of cr. lp.

Charge back 2 seconds, hit down forward, 2 punches (EX overhead), cr. lk, up back (headbutt,) forward, back, forward+3p.

It seems so easy, but for some reason my ultra charge is dropping. I’ll keep working at it. Thanks for the inputs.

Edit: I have it now. For some reason i was waiting untill the overhead connected before going to the db position for the lk. You have to go db before the overhead connects. I’m so scrubby.

:db::uf::db:+:k:

lol the first thing in this thread should be how to do c.LP, c.LP, c.LK xx HB since people are still making threads about it. That, or we need a new sticky for it.

Seriously…

whats balrogs kara throw?

Don’t think he has one - he has no normals that move him forward.
