Balrog (Boxer) Beginner's Guide

adding the C LK is more for showing how good you are with combo execution, but if you consider yourself to be a no-nonsense player then using C LP x 3 is fine. The damage is about the same

i see some players use the c.mk on knock downed opponents. why is this good? is it suppose to be a meaty hit?

great read, thanks guys

c.LK does a wee bit more damage instead of c.LP (And it’s not like a 4 frame link is much easier than a 3 frame link).

It’s just a low + on block, mostly.

im a fairly new balrog player and i know most the basics but i seem to have trouble with connecting the headbutt to ultra online, i can do it fine in training and in arcade but for some reason its a lot harder to pull off for me online. i know lag comes in to play a bit but i feel like im doing everything right and its just not coming out. i realize this is a annoying topic so any help would be much appreciated .

The only adivce I could give you is don’t play anything below 3 bars.

In 3 or 4 (obviously even 5) bar matches i get the ultra 98% of the time (still fuck it up sometimes, but it’s really rare) while in 2 or 1 bar matches (avoid those) it happens quite often that the ultra doesn’t come out, or even worse it comes out too late, losing the juggle, and eating an ultra myself right afterwards

yeah when it comes out to late you definitely tend to pay with your life hahah. i see what you mean though and it makes sense that i can connect fine offline cause theres no lag, another thing i should mention is when i learned the combo i had no trouble online with connecting it but now it seems ive lost it a bit. it gets real frustrating knowing that i could of had the match if i would of connected the combo… idk thanks for you advice though i dont think i’ll be playing any 1 or 2 bar matches anymore. any other tips any of you might have would be great though:tup:

don’t tell me, 2 days ago i made the error to accept a 1 bar final (after rejecting 3). It was against this decent ken, around 10k gp. Lost BOTH rounds due to a missed ultra juggle (that would have killed him).

hahha like minutes after i posted i was playing and a missed ulra happened but the guy was a scrub so i just got hit once

There is a lot of information in this thread, but most of it is very spread out. I noticed that Jay Wang was complaining about people making new threads asking for things that have been covered, and I see a lot of people saying to use the search function and while it’s nifty, it still leaves a lot to be desired.

Basically what I’m saying is that wouldn’t it be better to edit the first few pages and consolidate even more of useful info?

well i took you advice about not playing anything with 3 or less bars and its been working out really well, ive been connecting every time so far

Is it confirmed that Balrog’s first Punch during his Ultra/Super have more horizontal range than his Kick?

The reason why I ask is because if trying to Ultra/Super through a projectile I’m wondering if it’s better to use Punch or Kick for the first animation since if you use Kick you can fuck up their jumps and catch them but if you use Punch it won’t hit as Anti-Air so I’m wondering if there’s any extra hroizontal range from the Punch animation at least.

When doing an ultra through a fireball, use the punch buttons to get maximum reach and ensure none of the hits whiff. Off a headbutt use the kick buttons.

He doesn’t need to hold the punch buttons, he can just do the ultra / super and it will pass through and immediately do punches. The only time it changes is if you hold kick or let go of kick, it would default to punches then.

Agreed on the headbutt, anytime they are in the air I’ll do my ultra because I can juggle and get almost every if not every hit off.

Had big trouble vs a Ryu yesterday. It was very frustrated as he continued to perform the same action over and over and I got a beating. He went for the knockdown en immediately crossed me up to do a basic combo I tried blocking all the time but apperantly he just beat through my block. After that he continued to jump both sides when I got down to keep me guessing wich side he would attack en everytime I got late to block the combo. I tried backdashing when I got knocked down but that didnt help eather. Could this be of cause of lag? (this was a 2 bar connection) or is it a problem with my execution? (or something else?) Sorry for my crappy English. And sorry again if this problem has been asked 100 times

I have a really hard time doing Balrog’s basic combo of c.lp c.lp c.lk headbutt. Are there any youtube videos out there that can help me get the timing down? I’ve watched a lot of videos where people do the combo but I have a really hard time copying it.

This was giving me trouble and here is what I did:

Go into training mode and do c.lk xx headbutt

You should be able to do this fairly easily, just make sure you do the headbutt as soon as the c.lk connects. Once you have this down, stare at your hands while you do it, you’ll notice that if you ignore the stick and watch your hands on the buttons, you’re almost rolling (timing wise) from LK to HP. Then try to do the full combo with or without the jump-in (maybe without if you want to just focus on the hard part first.) You’ll probably notice that you are no longer quickly rolling into the HP, but rather waiting really long and then doing it. Every time you mess up the input of the full combo, go back and just do c.lp xx headbutt and notice the timing. Try to execute the full combo as a slow (spacing out as much as you can to ensure you are linking) c.lp … c.lp… and then just trigger the muscle memory of doing c.lk xx headbutt. Also make sure you practice this doing a (1)7 motion for the headbutt so you can add the ultra in later.

This. That’s almost exactly how I learned it. This combo was giving me trouble and I thought it was the link, but it was actually canceling c.lk into the headbutt. Once you have that part down, it’s just a matter of tacking on the first two c.lps. I also did it a lot with my eyes shut so I could get the “feel” of it in muscle memory.

ive been having some really off days lately especially with connecting head butt to ultra, its really gay because i had it so good for a while and now i keep missing it and it costing me the match. anyone else having some off days lately?

I always go into training before I play online or at the arcade. Really helps if you warm up first. Daily practice is key.
