Balrog (Boxer) Beginner's Guide

As far as bnb combos go I’ve been using c.mk - c.lk - headbutt, the timing seems similar to ST’s c.mk - c.mp, so it’s familiar.

Must agree though I’m having a lot of trouble linking jabs.

linking jabs have been easier for me than the cmk-clk-HB combo…

is gief a counterpick for rog? every time i pick rog someone chooses gief

boxer > gief imo.

just zone well with normals and apply LP dash straights/ex rush uppers sparingly. headbutt lariats.

if he’s SA happy, use lk dash low smashs.
if he tries to cross you up, ex dash upper is a good escape

so no, giefs are mostly free wins for me.

How do I get Balrog’s Hoodie American Flag costume?

buy the alternate costume pack … wait its not out yet

March 10: Shadaloo Pack will include alternate costumes for: Seth, M. Bison, Sagat, Balrog, and Vega.

Would have been awesome if you could “earn” it…

Gief was a counter pick to boxer in SFII, so I guess people are carrying over the same mentallity to SFIV. But yeah, Gief isn’t much of a counter pick to boxer anymore in SFIV.

boxer zones gief like nothing… gief is too slow for him and any good rog user can read easily and counter easily against a gief…

rogs c.HK beats out giefs lariat in range, so giefs done with that when he’s zoned, after that… whenever gief tries jumping in, c.HP or something… im pretty overwhelmed myself when going against a rog
im a gief player myself, but even i can counter against a solid gief with rog

just to be clear. would Dictator’s Psycho Crusher be considered a projectile or for that matter, Honda’s head butt or Blanka’s Rolling Attack? the reason i ask is that i avoided a Psycho Crusher with TAP during online play. i’m wondering is this very possible or just some very rare glitch of some kind.

TAP has invincilibity frames on startup. If timed right, you can use it to pass through other moves in the game (assuming they only have mid level hit boxes).

TAP is commonly used to go through fireballs as they are slower moving and easier to react to. But it is indeed possible to also use it and avoid the “torpedo” style of moves just like you observed with Bison and the Psycho Crusher. No “glitches” or anything of that nature here.

And for clarity sakes, a projectile is a moving attack, not part of the character’s body. So no, those “torpedo” style attacks by Bison, Blanka and Honda are not considered projectiles.

Please see the frame data thread for more details regarding the invincibility frames. I will make updates soon to include all of the comments found in the mook.

thank you. of course, timing it right is the operative phrase here. generally, i wouldn’t recommend anyone do it at close range or probably not at all. still, i was kicking myself for not following up with something afterwards. i mean, he was in the corner, wide open and in still in Psycho Crusher animation.

I’m pretty new to the SF4 scene. I’ve been playing SF for a long time. What does it mean when the term is used “breaks SA” super attack? i’m clueless about some of the terms.

Break Super Armor. So if they are charging Focus or have a move with SA like Abel’s EX Rekka then you will break it and do damage.

oh ok thanks crisium.

you gotta understand that at a higher level of playing, even getting a jump-in in is pretty tough. experienced players clearly defend very well. however, c.mk is the only actual combo starter that require the other person to defend low. if you mix it up with an ex overhead when you do c.mk starters alot, it really benefits you.

c.lp is godly in terms of speed and breaks throws (lol) but when you play against a very solid keep away ken who can kara throw you outside of c.lp range, you’d need many more combos to keep him on his toes

wow performing headbutt with up back is a clever idea!!!

boxer is a powerhouse in this game!!

Is there a way to combo Ex Dash Smash into Ultra in the corner without dashing from the entire screen?

nope. tried.

i’ve better results with catching people jumping back with ppp > ultra

Damn. thought so. it’s a good link cause the Smash puts them in the prime spot for the Ultra.
