Do not do this to Blanka with an Ultra. In fact stay the hell away from their wakeup when they have an Ultra.
for me as a guile player, when i see someone close to me throwing jabs as i am waking up, i just throw/suplex the fool.
so i dont know how well the fake punches bode against other characters.
but yeah i’ve learned not to do sb too close. if i have time, i get close to the down person, b+mk then wait and that will get me out of most super/ultra wakeups.
b+mk-ing on my opponent’s wakeup is a mistake I am guilty of more times than I’d like. Usually nets me a shoryu-cancelled into ultra.
Wake-up booms too close… ate a buncha supers/ultras last night because of it…
well i mean b+mk to get me out of range. i dont mean to do upon wakeup. do it before. you’ll see in some of gilley’s videos he sets up like that sometimes.
crouch hk
turtle crouch position and not doing anything then getting thrown
scared of gief
out turtled by sagat
haven’t figured out how to counter vega… will try air throws to counter vega’s air moves
on the wakeup ultra thing–its easy to bait people into doing their ultras, most people dont understand how fast guile recovers from his sonic boom so the trick is to stand a step back and throw the sb out early, alot of times people will see the sb and instinctively wake up ultra which you should be able to block/dodge then punish.
someone earlier said throw alot and that is so true, throw a sonic boom, they jump air throw them, they block walk up and throw them, mixing in throws after sonic booms along with the usual attacks is a great strategy, its also very easy to throw people in the corner where guile pretty much owns everyone.
if someone is going for a meaty cross up just block, really theres nothing else you can do, outside of wake up cross ups. I know its been said and beaten to death but it bears repeating, guiles crouching fp is one of the best anti-air normals in the game(up there with ryu and balrog) make it a hbit to crouching fierce everytime they jump.
My biggest mistake with guile is the fact that I literally never do his ultra, prob because I use a fight pad where its impossible to do but that is a point that I feel is lacking in my game.
I find myself stubbornly stuck in DB to have a charge for FK and eating jump-ins.
FK at end of blocked combos instead of SB.
Finally overcame the Ken crossup obstacle tonight. Especially being the habit that I’m always holding db. I’ve always hesitated in throwing out a crouching fierce. Now I’m letting lose with the Fierce punch more often than before. I’ve also completely forgotten the c. roundhouse kick. lol.
i have to stop using crouch HK… it works against scrubs but seasoned players punish me for this. still used to SF2 where his crouch HK was godly.
Sonic boom then hitting cr.fierce too early against a jumper then usually taking j.hk -> cr.hk or some fatty combo
This isn’t a mistake. Guile’s ultra is pure garbage in SF4. Unlike Ryu and other characters, his ultra is not necessary to win with. I’ve lost plenty of fights because I was trying to find a way to pull off his ultra. I’ve finally given up on it. I’ll only execute his ultra if I land a focus attack that crumples… any other time you try it, it is too risky and you could get punished for the missed attempt.
His ultra is too hard to pull off, too hard to combo into, and doesn’t do squat for damage. I swear his final kick on his ultra doesn’t do any damage at all… sometimes it’s embarrassing that his final kick doesn’t do squat to finish off the fight… leaving the opponent with enough for a chip damage to kill them.
His Ultra unfortunately I see as useful only for retaliation unlike most on the cast. I’ve AA’ed with it, but only gotten 3 hits MAYBE. Where it comes into its own is as you mentioned, during FAs and as punishment. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve landed the Ultra to punish an opponent during or after theirs to my surprise!
On this, I actually DON’T use the c.HP as much as I should! Played an aggressive, non-turtle Boxer who kept jumping in and I was so not used to it that I never once c.HP him! However, during games when I’m “on it,” I pull it off immediately on my opponents jump!
I see crouching roundhouse spammed too much.
My suggestion…it’s really not difficult to pull off at all. Just practice it enough where you can pull it out instinctively or do it off a Focus Attack or do it inside a combo. Think about it. If you can do c.mp xx FK; what is there to stop you to add in that extra slight motion to …c.mp xx FK xx Super? Oh wait, we’re talking about ultra here. My bad. Still, need to get the ultra downpat so when the opportunity strikes you can pull it out with ease. I’ll do the ultra once per fight on average, only so my opponent doesn’t know that I can do it easily. (eg. FADC >> Ultra, opponent jumps in and I use the Ultra as an anti air).
I wouldn’t say it’s hard to do, because I use Gilley’s circle method… so I can pretty much pull it off at will during training. However, during battle, for me, it’s really hard to find the right time to do it, and using it as anti air makes it even harder to time right under pressure.
Pulling off his Ultra before or after your opponent’s ultra is really rewarding for me for some reason.
anyway, back on topic… C.HK is the habit I need to drop. I also need to C.MP > FK more often.
A Blanka tried to chip me to death with his ultra and I ultraed right after his. Sweet sweet victory.
Guilty of posting on SRK.
Guilty of:
- using crouch roundhouse (tho I have recently been cutting down and switching to C. M kick as a safer option after seeing some more guile videos)
- FK instead of SB (so many times I have used the wrong thing and been punished…I blame my muscle memory but the pain…it hurts so much!)
- SBing on opponent wake-up. I keep forgetting ultras (and some other moves that hit me on wakeup) have invul on start up (especially Abels…biotch warps THROUGH my sbs!)
I gotta learn to play more D. And I’ve found that when I am playing more D (not 100% turtle mind you…I hate doing that) I tend to do better (more in control of the match so to speak). So just a matter of getting into that mindset.
I feel like a changed man after this confession!
(actually, I don’t…damnit!)
Keep doing this, but change to lp.sb and do it earlier than you need (by a few frames) so you can recover. That’s an easy way to bait out reversals - works a treat on Sagat players.
