B*tches Gather 'Round: The MvC3 Iron Man Team Thread

I think I’ve finally settled into my team of Iron Man (Unibeam) / Dante (Jam Session) / Strider (Vajra).

It’s not a totally optimal team, but there’s a lot of synergy and strength taking place.

Vajra compliments IM’s long game nicely, and L Repulsor Blast + Vajra call is a pretty safe option against full screen teleport characters, even if they like to do teleports with assist cover. He even gets a full combo off it if they try it.

At the very worst, you can swap Dante and Iron Man at the start of the round, and you get Dante with two great assists, and a great comeback-factor at the back of the team.

I can think of better teams for everyone involved, but they all include characters I have no interest in playing. If anyone else is working on a similar team as this, I should be able to help

This is my first IM team in UMVC3! I wasn’t that familiar with the new IM and Dante back then, and didn’t have much success with it (relied a lot on Strider’s random xfactor comeback factor:(). I find it difficult to combo off Vajra, although it is really good for keep away. C.h plus Vajra is hard to avoid, even if they do you can cancel it into something else to pressure. Jam Session is really good for IM though (helps a lot against bastards like Zero with his lightning bs), although it is even harder to combo from unless you are right below it with Replusor Blast.

I still prefer my team of Dante (Jam Session), Iron Man (Replusor Blast), Sentinel (Drones), I feel like it is the most optimal for all characters in the team (the problem is you have to play Sentinel, not a easy character to play, bad anchor and pretty free against every top character unless you get lucky). Replusor is kind of crap for Dante, although it can be defensively against teleporters and I can set up multiple mix-ups on incoming character with it and Acid Rain, it can also extend Sentinel’s combo (launch, basic air combo, call IM, rocket punch and launch into same stuff again). I feel like IM can’t live without drones (at least with the way I try to play, ie. like Joker lol) because it stops people jumping back, might try Doom with missile for a bit, but I don’t feel it works great with Dante.

I think the trick to combo’ing off Vajra is : you control when Vajra shows up. If you’re just calling it randomly while you fight, then yeah there will be a lot of situations where nothing comes of it.

But yeah I’ve mostly been using it with cr.H + Unibeam + Vajra, which is a good confirm from about halfscreen away. I’ve also had success with L Repulsor Blast + Vajra dealing with teleporters/air projectile characters. The Rep Blast covers Strider, and Strider covers the recovery of the Rep Blast.

I mostly use Jam Session close-to-midscreen, and I use Vajra when they’re further away and playing lame like me.

I think IM with Sentinel is a much better pairing, but I just don’t enjoy anchor Sentinel. I do enjoy anchor Strider though. The game starts when he falls in

I most definitely agree with this part. Anchor Sentinel is pain, he is too big and loses to too many characters, the only chance he has as anchor is fish for random frying pan and j.m. If the other guy got someone like Wesker, Magneto, Zero even Akuma against you, you have simply lost solely because of character match-ups.

Strider on the other hand is the most retarded character in xfactor, he is blindingly fast, so fast he makes level 4 Wesker looks slow and able to TOD every character with level 3 xfactor. I feel like if the other person has anything less than 2 full life character and I have level 3 xfactor with Strider, I have won, unless he has unhuman reactions and able to block everything, which is a extremely unlikely to happen. He has the stupid orbs if he needs it. Personally I think Strider is the best character in the game with Zero and Viper, in fact I put him above those two because he fits into any position.

But unfortunately, I play too aggressive to sit back with IM and lame out with Strider, unless I am up against Hulk, Capt America or similar. So I got no choice but to stick with the bloody robot, unless someone can suggest another assist that can do the same thing as the drones.

EDIT: have anyone tried using Strider’s Gram assist? I got some ideas with it, it could be used like RR’s log trap I guess. It is slower and goes though projectiles (since the sword is not a projectile, and it also combos off trades), I don’t know if IM is fast enough to follow up after wall bounce, and will the angle it hit is good enough to cover IM’s approach.

Well nothing can achieve quite the same combination of screen control and lockdown as drones, but Ammy’s Cold Star is great for lockdown and still has some range on it. She’s also considered a half-decent anchor iirc.

Hey man I was trying this one in training mode (although just doing c.L, c.M, s.H S + Drones) and I was having trouble getting the drones to hit as I land, is there a trick to it?

edit: Nevermind, I got it. The timing is tricky, and varies whether you are midscreen or in the corner. It seems really hard, but then again Iron Man is an execution heavy character. Still, 860k bnbs are too good to pass up, I’ll keep at it.

How do you guys feel about IM as anchor?
Because right now I run Ghost(Hellfire), Dorm(Dark Hole), Doom (Plasma Beam). I want to drop Doom for IM because I like IM more as a character and how his beam can set up combos better than Doom’s. Also, I know how to play IM much better than Doom.

I know IM is a battery character, but I want to keep GR on point, since he’s not as effective with only one assist. Should I keep IM as anchor, or should I switch up team order?

I would switch the order so Dorm is on anchor. Anchor Iron Man isn’t hopeless or anything, but he’s nowhere near as good in XF3 as Dorm. XF3 Dorm is pure silliness.

I think that IM on anchor is actually a better setup for that team than Dorm. While Dorm deals insane damage on XF3, his damage/chip can be made 100% useless if the other person has good mobility, instant overheads, and/or xfactor themselves.

However…Dorm in 2nd spot would be pretty sweet since he then get’s crossups with IM’s unibeam which can’t be undervalued. IM is also pretty sweet in XF3 as long as you’ve got good movement/spacing.

Kei

Deadpoo/Iron Man/Sentinel seems like a better order for my team. Repulsar Blast is a really good way to supplement Deadpool’s zoning game and this way I could learn TAC combos from Deadpool into Iron Man.

edit: I’m dropping Sentinel on my team for Doom probably. I HATE playing Sentinel on anchor. I might also try Spencer/Deadpool/Iron Man and Nemesis/Deadpool/Iron Man (again).

i wish i had a good sentinel -___- … dammit why couldn’t tony be a better point character over assist =[

I have a new team: Deadpool/Iron Man/Doom.

I’m thinking it will work pretty well. The main issue being you kind of have to work your ass off to make Doom anchor work. But I enjoy playing Doom a lot more than the robot. Plus Iron Man has a lot of synergy with Doom. Just look at Danke play. I could also utilize the same TAC combo Danke does if I manage to corner somebody with Deadpool.

Tony/Sent/Mag

Repulsor/Drones/Disruptor

We all know how good Tony and Mag are good with drones. Disruptor is weird to confirm from but it helps Sent and Tony get in if all else fails. Repulsor is hilarious for throw resets on people pushblocking it and crazy resets you can create with Mag’s gravity moves.

Thor (spark)/Doom(Missiles)/Iron Man (beam)

Doom gets a full DHC glitch against certain characters with Mighty Punish.
Unibeam obviously helps Thor’s approach as do missiles.
Missiles are great for laming people out with Iron Man from the air
Thor/Iron Man/Doom can all do over 1 million damage for 1 bar with this setup.
If you whiff Mighty Punish, Doom is a safe DHC.
Doom+unibeam= ridiculous chip potential. Sequences like ground photon, call unibeam, :m: Plasma Beam, unibeam gets blocked, :h: Plasma beam, do a ton of chip and are difficult to avoid.

Basically I like Thor and still think Iron Man sucks balls, but I’m willing to overlook that for his assist :woot:. This team is a lot of fun.

You think Iron Man is ass and you’re using THOR? My mind just exploded. Sounds like a fun team though.

Lol, Thor is like 2 whole tiers above Iron Man, there’s absolutely no comparison between the 2 characters.

I don’t know if I’d say two tiers, they are both definitely shit tier but thor is better than ironman for sure.

That’s cool, I still place Thor firmly in B tier. His combos are super beefy and he has a much easier time getting in than Iron Man. Tons of life and nice resets that are practically inescapable by lots of the cast. Not many people repping the God of Thunder though, so it’s tough to get a good idea of what he can do.

Depending on how you wanna set up tiers, I’d put Iron Man along side Tron, Phoenix Wright and Shuma.

Thor is way better than IM! He has soild pressure and more useful stuff that do just as much damage.

Wow you really think he’s THAT bad?

I guess whether you think he’s ass tier or low mid tier is irrelevant to knowing the character is not good and playing around his weaknesses. I still think he hovers in B- tier but I’m beginning to think I’m the minority.
