AZ Thread: Lots of events! Read 1st posts for upcoming AZ tourneys/events

Good damn you people have no sense of unity. You can all go to hell! We need a common enemy here… where’s Neil ;)?

Oh, the monitor is going to Haz. However, how do I get it to him? I live in Avondale. If someone wants to pick it up = perfect. If someone wants me to bring it to work, I can do that too. Does anyone who works at 2Wire/Pace still read this thread? Anyone want to pickup at either my home or work?

In other news, I finished watching Kara no Kyoukai. Shit was siiiick. I freaked out at the end with the eye stabbing, then my lady friend called me and I had to take a 2 hour break before I could find out what happened. It was agonizing.

Byron just started at 2wire, hes in training and goes to my house and haz all the time.

HAHAHA I would not have wanted to take a break at that part… glad you liked it.
Its seriously one of the best shows i’ve watched. I have the OST’s on loop when i’m at the office! Music is amazing.

Sigh

I knew, just knew that this would just turn into a issue and was hesitant to associate DEVASTATION with the Ranbats when Cory initially brought the idea up. It was my hope that it would be a positive experience and help to bring in more players into the community not as a focal point of unrest.

Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you people?

All I can ever be accused of is trying to support the community - the people in it now and the future players we hope will join. Anyone has a different opinion, feel free to share it now and air out your dirty laundry. I know there are a few salty (god I hate that word) people out there and if you want to spit out your two-cents let’s have it.

Do not get me wrong, I am not arguing here - unlike most of the internet I realize that there are contrary opinions and two-sides to every issue. Certainly, I am explaining my point as far as the motivation and decision but I am not saying that “my way” is the “right way” and I absolutely see the value of the “standard” Ranbat format, etc. I am just offering to you that this option may have its merits as well, especially early on in the life of the game.

Yeesh.

So, with that, we have the Ranbats starting up in two weeks and events this and next Saturday… if you guys can make it out, cool and if not, eh, maybe next time.

P.S.

Jon, the location of LAN Speed Games was decided before I even was brought in on the Ranbats. Certainly, there is a positive reinforcement because of my personal relationship with the owners, allowing us more leniency than, perhaps, might have been without.

Scott, I hear what you are saying about the risk/reward and your personal motivations. I am not discounting that at all but I am sure you agree that you cannot limit yourself to serious play only when-money-is-on-the-line as it is just not a feasible/realistic motivator, long-term. What happens when you finally have all the money you need, will it have the same influence? Oh gawd, I sound like a friggin life coach now.

Oh jeeze… great. Thanks guys… now I am one of those long-posting, page-hoarding bitches.

Hahahahaha

well i had a long post to explain stuff. but this pc sucks and it keeps losing my post when i try posting it.

mainly to shed light on cory’s bad/biased geography skills(still love you guy, but you are so off on your views, im not gonna try typing it all down a 3rd time, we can discuss in person sometime).

im all for this shit bringing new blood. im totally down for that. But i feel like it shuts out a lot of vet players. thats my issue. when there clearly is a way that benefits all players(ricks swiss style proves this, as well as ed’s alternate take on the same idea at aiab this past weekend).

robb: theres gotta be something on the line. even at the arcade, those quarters(which is nothing) still make me play harder. theres always motivation. i mean, if it doesnt matter, then why not just make it free? with no prize. instead of making it a prize that only one person can obtain, and it becomes impossible to obtain(prize may be set in stone, when theres still 1 or 2 tourneys left) if you have one bad showing or cant make one. thats my take. i just feel the pricing structure is horribly flawed. and i think the location is horribly flawed. since now you got a huge chunk of players that have to drive 40+ minutes to get there. whereas before, most people( including most west players) had to drive a max of 20-25 minutes…

Sounds like Phoenix is just too big for itself. IMO, you guys should really focus on having two communities. I know that is gonna sound kind of harsh since you want it to be all one, but I just don’t see how you guys can do that with as spread out as everyone is.

As I work out the details for the Tucson Gamers League, it would make sense for an east and west phoenix to each have their own league as well. That way when we do our arizona battles, it’s not just Tucson vs. Phoenix. We add a third team in the mix. That’s for a future discussion though.

Maybe I am speaking out of turn here, just by thoughts as I read through this. If it seems like it’s a constant struggle every time, then just give up :).

Before you say west siders aren’t willing to go anywhere, please realize that we show up to hazems as often as possible even thought thats a MINIMUM 30 minutes. Peoria is just were we draw the line.

Is Byron in AM or PM training? I’m doing an AM class that started today, but he’s not in my class. If he’s in Steve’s AM class or Bill’s PM class, I’ll bring the monitor and leave it in the respective training room. Let me know.

I haven’t been posting as much but I can say from experience that if all of our good players aren’t attending it doesn’t appeal to me. When I go to compete most of the time it’s because I want a challenge and also to make sure it’s worth my time.

If you hold a tournament where only half of the players are going to show up how does that help the scene?

Now for ideas on the table have one Tournament per month and then go with to your regions ranbat the other week/weeks. Now when phx comes to mind I don’t think you guys are going to enjoy having Danimitsu beating everyone over and over again for free change. But at the same time I can see why it’s so hard to work in unison to prove a competitive scene and enjoyment for all.

Hell half of the time we commute to Tucson a majority of their players don’t show up. You can’t win them all but you can at least make an attempt to overcome an opportunity.

P.S. I didn’t bother proof reading this due to some amazing denny’s food poisoning.

No worries, we are one big dysfunctional family. I do not mind a discussion over contrary point of views but I will take great offense when erroneous implications are made.

In the end, I do not think one season of Ranbats this way is going to kill anyone. We certainly cannot “take it back” at this point even if we were so inclined. We have been handing out flyers and such for months now - it is a bit too late for a change.

So, we will all just move forward knowing that it is what it is… some people will come, others not, and go on from there. I certainly do not fault anyone that does not show; for me everywhere is a long drive but I know some people are just not down with it.

Scott. Sure, we can certainly chat when we meet up.

Angelic. I never said or would say you are not willing to make a drive… less inclined, maybe

SNK. I think what you said is “Damned if you do and damned if you don’t”

P.S. As “we” have over the last few years, we will be supporting Bookman’s video game month in May and will be hosting Mortal Kombat tournaments at both their Mesa and Phoenix locations. I would expect them to be on PS3 as that is where the MK scene has mentioned they are hanging their hats. I figured I would get this bit o’ controversy out of the way while we are all talking - defuse one heated issue with another :bgrin:

ed: it is too big. that is a problem. the other problem is that the scene is not big, as a collective. theres just not a lot of people. 20 minute drives are not bad. but 40 can be, when its a tourney, where you get nothing, and you barely get any games in. to me, its not worth it if it was a regular tourney, or the incentive is more worth it, i would personally have no problem making the trip, each time. im sure the same would be true for quite a few people.

i like to iterate. that its fine. just pointing out some concerns. thats all. i always wish the best for these events. and am happy that they exist. no issues with that. my concern was the pricing. that was my only true beef. i understand the implications of it. mike stated his opinion on it, and i just fololwed through on it. its all good. in the end i hope it is a success, in which new players do come out, and some stick with the scene

Love you too scoots, just seems like theres always an issue when there is some change. I was just talking with haz the other day about doing a sf4/mvc3 tourney in between ranbats, and sometime soon. so be patient.

I think ed has a great idea, maybe 2 regions, as there is no good midway point. you say hazems, but hazems takes longer for me to get to from dans house, whom id be taking, than going to the dpad, and about equally as long from my house (20-25min). Maybe rick can get something going for the eastside folks, and we can do more with 2v2, team tourney etc. as the regions battle.

Im sorry, as much as I want everybody to be able to participate, its impossible to accomodate everybody, theres always going to be somebody who its either not possible or extremely inconvienant to attend, thats just life. The best we can do, is set a date, time and location, provide the rules and hope that all that can come do come. ive missed numerous eastside events and last seasons ranbats due to a bad location/time for me, I know I wasnt on here complaining about it, I just attended what I could, and played when I can. I dont think its too much to ask for that same respect. So, your maybe out some gas money, and a longer drive, for no real prize, but what about the fun times you have playing games, and talking shit with friends and or people youve known for years…whats that worth? If there are plenty other tournaments going on for “real money” in between the ranbats, I dont see the issue with trying something different…wasnt bootcamp trying something different? to help get new players? well it worked, masybe this will bring new players as well, and further expand our community.

I think that if the Ranbats are too far west for east side players to make it out to then that’s all there is too it. There’s no reason to complain IMO that it’s too far away especially when the east side scene is strong enough as it is. The west side can do their ranbats and the east side can do their ranbats/tournaments/gatherings/etc. We don’t need to get 100% of the players together 100% of the time and add new players all at the same time. That already seems like too much.

The phoenix scene may be big and spread out but it’s big enough to have groups within groups. Westside players, eastside players, northeast, whatever. Then when you throw Tucson in the mix you have good competition to see who’s the most dominating region.

Armando (that’s Angelic, right?) said he’d be trying to open up the UAT venue again, I can host gatherings at my house, and I’m sure there are other players in the area who can contribute to the scene. Let’s just work with what we have and make the best of it.

New players will come, just give it time. That’s something that we don’t have a lot of control over anyways. In my experience people’s willingness to stay has been based off of two main things, how much they enjoy the game and how well they vibe with the other players. Just don’t be a dickhead around new players and don’t shark their money (or at least offer a lot of bang for the buck). After a tournament try to keep the venue open as long as possible for casuals and casual players will come to tournaments. At the same time, we as players are not so strong that the only way to improve is to play new players. Everyone playing right now has a lot of potential to improve and we should tap into that.

My main point, let’s shift our focus onto what we do have instead of what we don’t have and start building the community from there. Dedication to improving and a cool group of people to hang out with can go a LONG way to help turn us into great players.

Hmm… well, my bad I guess. I hear about these things on the back end. I was unaware that was how it was presented to the public. As Robb already stated, DEV has far less involvement in this than what was indicated in that initial post.

qft, well said sean, I think this about sums it up 100%

You get alot of things on the “back end”…just saying…<3

lol… what if we included the boys from level up… they far as shyt! oro valley another city! ha…

hey ed, any chance to change the days from wed to thursday?

Sorry Fernando, everyone is calling for Wed. I will add you the MVC3 group on facebook.

I am getting the finals video done first. It was 16 minutes long so of course I have to split it up.
