AZ Thread: Lots of events! Read 1st posts for upcoming AZ tourneys/events

Just to add my 5 cents.
As soon as I saw it was in peoria I wasn’t going to go…
then when I saw 1 dollar, I knew it was 100% I wasn’t going to go.

While I would like to refrain from essaying my reasoning up, its simply because gas would be far more costly than even winning the ranbat.

edit: scott nailed it up above… i’m blind.

Im not trying to bash the tourney. And i hope it does well. But there’s some major flaws

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Of course the reason why the Ranbats are on the West-side is because of Cory and the West-Side crew winning the East vs West; that was a condition of the win, right? He was the one to choose the place and asked, as a member of the DEV team, if we could use our equipment, promote and run it.

So, from what I am hearing, for some of you it is not at all the competition or the chance to play and learn, you simply want an opportunity to win money. For most tournaments I understand, but the Ranbats are supposed to be more than that, right?

It’s very hard not to seem like your bashing the ranbats when posting your reasonings, but in reality these points are very realistic. That’s not saying they have to do anything about them, which really they don’t, but its just a heads up from people who the ranbats are trying to attract i.e. current scene players.

edit:: keep posting tournament instead of ranbats.

I’m ok with this, seriously comic book venues are the BEST!
Seeing magneto and capt. america on the walls at the last tournament made it crazy fun.

Ha, love ya man but you lost me in there somewhere.

I think what you are saying is that even though the reasoning behind the Ranbats (new blood, more about ranking/play/competition than money, location, etc.) all makes sense and is valid that there is STILL an issue because there is no money there?

I do giggle a bit because, as a whole, our community is the biggest bunch o’ cheapasses ever (I love you all but you know it is true) - half the people out here do not enter even $5.00 tournaments.

At times we, as a group, seem so close minded. Either we want to grow the community or we want to keep it an elitist club… Either we open up the doors and welcome people in and show them the ropes or we make it intimidating and unappealing .

I do not think everyone wants to keep playing the same 10 dudes every weekend and attend a tournament with the same 30 dudes in it every month, or maybe I am wrong?

I saying that there is certainly a time and place for everything: there are times to hold a “real” tournament with high-stakes and prizes and stuff-on-the-line and there are times to hold open-houses, as it were, and provide opportunities for more than just the existing hard-core.

Not trying to sound like I am calling anyone out, because I am not, but it is discussions like this where we see the difference between the idea of supporting the community and catering only to the select few.

I agree in the fact that most of us don’t have alot of money to throw around, which should be even more of an indicator as to why the location for ranbats was a bad idea. None of us have that kind of gas money. Which is the main point I was getting at.

If it was in the PHX area, I wouldn’t care about a 1 dollar entree / winner pot. I see the validity in making it 1 dollar to encourage people to come out because without new blood, this scene won’t stay alive in the very long run.

Rage moment aside, that was some of the sickest Chris play I’d ever seen. The combo with the 3 level ender was pretty slick.

Everything he said, basically. Speaking just for myself, I work a forty hour a week plus job and gaming is something I do in my spare time. This weeekend my schedule was open and I was able to go to Tucson and had a great time. This year I plan to go to Evo just to check it out and go two and out. I look at a place like California where they have a more established scene and I see why ranbats would work well there. The long time scene members and the new players blend together at events like this. Arizona is just so spread out that it’s hard to really please everyone.

I would also say you shoulder consider the option of alternating locations for these ranbats. Or if someone has the space to do so, perhaps something where an East side ranbat is held. Nothing against what you all are doing, I think it’s good but I wouldn’t drive out that far. Another thing is I want to play people who are better than me so I can improve, knowing some top players won’t be there gives me less incentive to do so. Again this is just feedback, not intended to be a flame.

If you are looking for new players and to show them the ropes, maybe you should consider doing a Boot Camp once a week instead of the RanBats.

New people are intimidated. We see it all the time, and no matter how cheap you make it, they won’t show up if they feel like they are going to get embarrassed. That is just how the new generation is for the most part. You have to try and build up their confidence, and actually take the time to show them how to play on a competitive level. It’s a very difficult thing and something I have been struggling with since I opened the arcade. We have probably doubled the number of the “regular” players over a 2 year span. I think Marvel gives us the chance to do that again, but you can’t just throw new people into a tournament and expect them to have fun against the likes of Sabre, Armando and the rest.

Just my 2 cents. I am actually going to speak with Marvin this week about doing a free boot camp.

I went to a couple of euphoria gamings tournies over at Lan Speed games in peoria and there was alot of new blood i had never seen before and most were noobs to fighters unlike us SRK’rs but they were eager to play regardless of the comp like dan, corey or myself. They were more so impressed with our gameplay. There’s alot west siders here who will go just to kick it like myself so i dont think we will see any problems with people showing up to enter the ranbats!

SSF4 ain’t dead. Looking for people to play on Wednesday night. Hit me up.

All good points guys.

Location is always going to be a problem with us - we are just all over the place. We have yet to hold anything over here on the West-Side, which was why Cory bargained for that honor. Not tracking tit for tat but I am pretty sure that West-Siders have traveled to East-Side gathers, etc. far more than the reverse; it is not going to kill you :bgrin:

How about we create something of a compromise…

Ranbats stay when and where they are at and someone organize a BootCamp on alternating Sundays on the East-Side?

My only fear is that:
A. People will get burned out
and/or
B. People will only travel to one or the other.

But, at least there are options this way… sure, we all still have houses, like Hazem’s, that we can go play but it is nice to have some “official” not-at-some-dude’s-house events around. That was not meant derogatorily… trying to get people off the street to roll to some strange person’s house can be problematic (yes, I have experience here hahahahaha).

No, but it sure seems like Capcom is trying to kill it.

I think that Cory bargained with himself for that so called honor. If I remember correctly Rickdawg (who was hosting ranbats at the time) and others had huge problems moving the Ranbats to the westside. So I’m calling BS on that. I think most people really don’t about that.

I think the main problems with Ranbat’s this time around was everything was decided by the Dev group. Ranbats were before community driven , location date time and entry were polled by the community.

So people have problems with it. No matter where you have it people will have problems. I personally don’t have a problem with the location, it just isn’t worth the drive for some people. The entry fee and payout make it not worth it to some. People will go and have a good time I’m sure.

So who’s interested in entering in some $5-10 tournaments?

I haven’t been keeping up… Are ranbats going to be streamed? Go with a “yes” please… thank you :). So me and like two other people can watch. Heh.

Okay then, with that said I will now be **attempting to organize Bootcamps in the near future for us here at PHX.I will be bringing UAT back as a venue **(upstairs… not the kitchen) and will need assistance with set ups.

I will post more information later when I talk to a few people, but for now please post if your interested and have anything to help.

I also need to know what day people would like to have this take place. I understand people can’t make it during the weekdays, but I also don’t want to make every weekend have a saturday and a sunday for MVC3. Some of us like to relax after a M-F job lol…

Yo, i know this is late but i had a really busy weekend. Just wanted to say thank you to all the phx people who showed up i hope everyone enjoyed themselves.

Scooter – You were like a kid in a candy store when you first walked in and saw all the arcade setups. Mat Mania ftw!! =p

John – GGs in 3s… its always fun.

Ty – Sorry i had to leave so soon, Man… i was learning and having a blast playin. We’ll have it on type A next time you show. =)

I don’t agree with location based off east vs west. reason being, that the location is extremely far west. its not even in phx. People said our ranbats were east side, but in reality with the core of the scene, that was the center(they were all held in phx too). 20-25 minute drive at the most for a majority of ws guys. And it was the same for east guys. And at the same time, it was more easily accessible for Tucson when they came.

The location was balanced. LAN speed games is severely unbalanced. So not only will it still take 20-25 minute for some west guys to get there. But now it takes all people in scottsdale/tempe/mesa/chandler/gilbert atleast twice as long. That’s pretty extreme.

I’m sure LAN speed is a cool location, id like to check it out myself, I just think its a horrible location for a ranbat, but for a tourney, it would be awesome. I’m all for individual tourneys being all over the place. But for ranbat, It really does shut a huge chunk of players out from attending each one. If ricks ranbat shut players out cuz of 20 minute drive, then its still the same problem, but worse, cuz they will still be shut out, on top of eastside players.

As for payout. It’s not all about money, but I would want something for winning. And like I said, what’s the point of attending a final ranbat if the season winner is already set in stone(if that does happen)? I spend a lot of time and money to get where I’m at, id like to see some of that come back to me. shit isn’t cheap. You play online poker tourneys that are free. Fools just go all in all the time, cuz no fear of losing anything. Pay tourney, those same players no longer do that and they play for real. I can’t have fun at a tourney when nothing is on the line. Cuz I know myself, and others have nothing to lose. So we play more careless. Only the new players and casual players will try hard. its about having something to lose/gain.

I hope it brings newplayers, like arnul says. That would be great. But it definitely shuts a lot of players out at the same time.

If go the UAT route again, I don’t think personally bootcamps worked very well. I think we should just throw tournaments with actual payouts. Also have a casual area to play too. I liked Ricks Swedish tournaments thing.

That was cool.

I personally have a lot of faith in bootcamps because If it wasn’t for them I would of never learned how to play SFIV or use an arcade stick. Thanks to the bootcamps at the d-pad I became part of the scene.

There are currently a lot of tournaments being hosted, I am talking about some east side weekly or bi-weekly gatherings.
If your looking for tournaments with actual payouts… you just missed 2 of them… I am sure more are to come.

Also, I was thinking about doing this:

After two bootcamp gatherings, we do a tournament. Repeat.
