Carlos: Thats why you do a combination of Both tourneys. Say like 1 week we do $1 tourney(no ranbat), next week we do $5-10. That way noobs/cheapfucks can still harness their gameplay, and the hardcore will get what they want too.
Even then, the $5-10 tourneys dont have to be straight up double elim. Rick has already established a swiss style format before, so people who go 2 and out fast, they get placed in a separate bracket. Even the lower tier player gets atleast double the games, even if they lose each set.
I like what people are doing to bring the noobs in. But its coming at the cost of the hardcore player, which is rather important.
Im going to try to come out to atleast one tourney this weekend. I dont think ill fare well tho, i havent played a single game of anything since the 2v2. My game/stick/cables are still in my car =/

I’d go to the tournaments if I thought I actually had a chance, but as last night’s 21-0 shutdown showed me, I’m still a noob compared to some of you. When Tsumuji’s Doom yelled “you have no hope”, I believed him.
Since I’m not in the state to observe, I won’t comment on whether that’s true or not. It really doesn’t matter to the point I’m gonna make.
The great thing about Arizona’s scene is that most people (despite internet shit talk) are relatively friendly in terms of getting games in and playing. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to your opponent during friendly/casual matches. You’ll learn a lot just by talking with them about it. Even if it’s just “Hey, how do I beat X strategy?” or “Is that invincible/punishable/plus on block?” simple questions can sometimes lead to big revelations. The most important thing though is that you KEEP PLAYING. You don’t always have to enter the tournaments, but there will most likely be people there who want to play, and the people at a tournament are the ones who can help you get better the fastest.
Oh I’ll definitely keep playing. I have been playing fighting games since Street Fighter 1, but I just simply don’t have the ninja fingers that some of you have. It’s why I have to play keepaway in MVC1/2/3 instead of rushdown. I have been playing MVC2 for ten years, but still can’t beat (nor mimic) good rushdown.
