Marvel is extremely unforgiving. You cannot make mistakes at any stage in the game regardless of how many characters or how much meter you have. This game can be an absolute rapefest if you don’t know how to block and react accordingly. The stupid shit that you speak of is often times getting randomly hit by random pokes, or your assist getting caught. Me and luey have told you a million times, that’s not the games fault that’s your fault.
Also, as scott has said, the fact that the top players have been consistently the top players should say something about the competitive level. Team Combo Sugah Muji, regardless of how much you discredit yourself, was a good team. The characters where really solid, and you used a currently high tier form of rush down. Without knowing how to combat that team with match up experience, I would be hard pressed to find people who could beat it on the first go. Regardless of how easy it was, the fact of the matter was that it was still a solid and good plan, and if you won it was because of what you did and not because of the game mechanics or random stupid shit.
More to think of is how new this game still is. It has been only a few months (2+), and we still have more to discover. It’s like complaining that Vanilla SFIV was stupid because your team of double sagats was raping against random characters in a 2 month old game… Give it time, and give the people time and I am sure eventually your plans will fail without more improvement and advancement on your end.
Scott: You bring up two examples, where in MvC2 you lose options. But, barring the infinites, you rarely lose a full character for making a single mistake. So you don’t lose options on one bad guess. For ST, the inverse is true, where the damage is high if you make two mistakes. But, if you make one mistake you don’t lose the ability to uppercut. In MvC3, you get a combination of both. You get killed on one mistake AND you lose options, making it more likely for you to get hit and slide further down that slope. And I think that’s why they put that Xfactor thing in, to balance that out. So, both ST and MvC2 are good counterpoint examples, but I think it’s the combination of the two that hurts MvC3 in my mind.
Armando: Hope I’m not offending you with my comments, I recognize that this is your game of choice and the time you’ve put into it shows. We’ve got our list of top 5 or so players pretty solidified and I in no way mean to take that away from you guys. You’re right, I bitch quite a bit about getting hit by random pokes. Its cool and all to take responsibility for every loss, but sometimes it feels like seeing a pedestrian get hit by a car that decided to drive on the sidewalk and calling it the pedestrian’s fault for getting hit. It’s physically possible for the car to drive on the sidewalk and ignore the consequences, but isn’t that idea completely fucking stupid?
Also, as far as Combo Sugah Muji goes, I actually ended up only playing that Wolverine Akuma Wesker team once against Robb, I switched to my main team on the second match. As contrary as it sounds, I take a bit of pride in the fact that I played the team I worked at and won with it.
Overall, you make good points and I appreciate you and Luey always keeping my newfound temper in check. My opinion of the game keeps wavering lately, but one thing I’m continually needing reminder of is that I need to keep the passive-aggressive bullshit I spew to myself.
Some people just aren’t “Marvel people”. This is a fact; it takes a completely different mindset and skillset than any other fighting game, even “faster” airborne fighters where it seems shit fills the screen like GG. Some people can flip between marvel and traditional fighters and some cannot. I really tried when MvC2 was gaining popularity, but I realized I just don’t have the mindset to use/protect my assists as is required in a game like this. I totally admit I only have the ability to focus on 1v1 fighting (this also was revealed to me when trying to play the original Starcraft or any other RTS games.)
I totally respect Marvel players and enjoy Marvel matches and understand what and why things happen when they do. I just don’t like fighting 3v3. Don’t fault the game for what it is; the bullshit that’s in the game suits it well and obviously those who play it well just know how to deal with it and take advantage of it.
Sooooooo…who’s for GoW3 tomorrow? Hit me up after 5 on XBL!
Your example with the car rings true in a fair world, but its not a fair world, nor a fair game. It is about screwing the other guy as much as possible. You are not offending me in any way, I’m just getting tired of reading complaints regarding how this game isn’t fair and how everybody should have more chances and not die in one combo. It is honestly a crutch to keep thinking like that, because when ever you lose you will just fall back and complain about the game. The reality is you just need to deal with the fact that that’s how the game is, and find a way within that game to win. Seth in SFIV would die from 1 combo all the time. Half the roster had a 700+ stun combo that would pretty much make me die in 1 mistake. Regardless, In order to advance I needed to understand that there was nothing I could do to change that, so I just shouldn’t get hit/play smarter.
You need to decide if your just going to be a casual player(aka the iceman!), or a competitive player and when you do, gear your mentality towards that. It seems right now your still split in half, and its not going too well.
Jon, I think you lose a full character for one mistake a lot of times in MvC2. Cable’s AHVBx3, Storm/Sent DHC, Sent aircombo to unblockable, Mag rom infinite to corner for near impossible to escape hyper grav tempest, etc. I think MvC3 is a bit more forgiving once you lose a character because assist in general are not as strong in 3 as they were in 2. You’re right about the x-factor though, it allows for comebacks when you only have one character left.
Ok guys, I just cracked and decided to upgrade to a gold account on xbox live. So if anybody wants to play some mvc3 online with me hit me up. My handle is ForwardSSBM. I’ll be adding the rest of you as well.
I think I have come around more to the stupidity of the damage and how its so easy to kill multiple characters at a time in this game. The only thing that gets to me is waiting 40 seconds for a combo to finish and kill multiple characters. Seriously, I want to keep moving and making decisions instead of being able to pause for a nice conversation if I slip up and get hit. I really wouldn’t mind if the hitstun decay simply decayed faster. But, the game is what it is, so really there pretty much is no use complaining at this point I guess.
I do find it a bit funny when I hear people talking about learning to block in a game with massive amounts of unblockables though.
Fair point. I’ll figure it out sometime in the future, I guess.
Here’s a question for everyone, how do y’all deal with runaway in Marvel, particularly the up-back monsters who are in the air half the time filling the screen with shit? Haz’s Trish is one of them, but I played against another particularly annoying Trish who was doing that online today and I couldn’t figure out a single way to combat it. The ways I’ve seen people deal with them are using teleports and full screen supers, but my team has neither. The only other way I can think of it is to super jump in, but if they’re constantly super jumping backwards themselves I don’t get much offensive capability, especially while they’re laying traps everywhere.
Well Trish is really good at runaway, that’s her strong suit so expect an up hill battle unless you playing some counter characters. My strategy though is to jump in. I dash in if I’m full screen away, but once I’m close to underneath her I just bunny hop towards her because of the traps. The ground trap, you want to set it off so the jumping will take care of that. But I keep jumping at her and blocking, usually they do a dive kick, if you’re in the air sometimes the player will cross themselves up. They usually do cr. L when they land, so if you have a good move to fall with you can try it. Sometimes you land before they do when they dive kick, when that happens I mash cr. L and chris assist. They almost always push block me but chris holds them down for a little bit, which is just enough time to WD in and make a guess as to how to get a hit. If I guess wrong and the Trish is safe again I expect her to sj again so I sj preemptively, i.e. without reacting to it, and go for either a MMHS series or just air throw. If the air throw comes out as an H and it hits then you still get a free S to add on. Trish has low health though, so at the point where I make my opening, if I guess correctly then she has a 100% combo coming her way.
With your team, all you need to do is either switch to Hidden Missiles assist or switch to him and use his Hidden Missiles. You can also Proton Shock, Plasma Beam, Proton Shock to lock him on the ground. If he super jumps, Hidden Missiles again. Or, if he’s right above you, use his upwards super. If it hits, X-factor and do it again.
Hidden missiles is a great idea since the jumping makes plasma beam crossups useless anyway. I’ll give that a shot, plus try Sean’s jumping techniques. Thanks, guys.
