Gunrobot was pointing out the difference in the rulings. At Evo, you could change ultra if you did it before the loser picked their ultra. Not their Character.
Robb, the decision is ultimately up to you but is there any reason that the rules regarding Ultra Combo selection wouldn’t be aligned with every other tournament?
I see number 4 and number 3 as the only acceptable ways to play this game. I know many people will disagree, but the entire point of adding multiple ultra’s in the game was to offset bad match ups and improve balance. For some match ups it can be like getting counter picked twice if the option to select the proper ultra is removed.
I simply find that to be pretty much major bullshit. You are already being counter picked, at least remove the terrible stipulations that people might try to abuse and win by disqualifying their opponent if they try to change ultra too slow. Basically, I think this rule undermines the design of the game and simply increases potential for abuse in a tournament setting.
I find this rule particularly odd because MvC3 has a the complete opposite ruling for a very similar function. How come I can change team orders and assists when I win in that game but I cannot change ultra in SSF4 without guessing.
Whether you change it or not is obviously up to you Robb, I just at least want to give you my input as long as you are here asking for it.
Well I know the way MLG does it is they just set up the mixers and daisy chain them to work together and if you have a headset just plug it in; but if we’ll be able to set it up on our own that is fine. Can we veto Zealot… Bungie messed it up that is why they have Arena Zealot now… If I can make a suggestion change it to Asylum…
I would say that #4 is the best way to go. The winner already has a possible counter-match coming up. It is silly to further handicap him by allowing the opponent to counter pick his ultra. Typically, if a character has a bad match up against another character, it is still a skewed match up regardless of the ultras. The discrepancy is there for a reason. Honestly, from the point you counter pick, you should be treated like the coward you are! hahahahah! jk (but not really)
This x 1000. Some majors can’t even follow their own rules for 2/3 vs 3/5 losers’ finals (ask Big Marcus). Players will sort it out on their own 99% of the time, but rules do need to be in place for the few people who do cry foul.
That said, rule #3 ftw.
ultra selection is a touchy subject. its been around since 3s. every side has valid argument. One side is, you can change the ultra whenever you damn please cuz the game rules allow it, even in arcade. another side is that it can be bs in tourney, when its a best of 3 or more series, where you can still counter your opponents choice, even though you won. while this hardly applies to most matchups, there are some matchups that live and die by ultra selection alone. I personally think that its lame that you can still change ultra. But at the same time, i am all about following the rules that the game establishes on default, which does allow you to always change the ultra. Unfortunately, that rule can be contradictory, in other games. games like tekken and such, allow you to change character each match, in arcade. you obviously dont want your opponent to be able to switch character if they won, in tourney, even though the game rules allow it.
So who’s really right, and who is really wrong? each side is contradictory, which makes it tough. i personally think you should keep the same ultra. but i come from a different time and I know i am the minority with that. I accept switching ultras. I may not agree with it, but I deal with it.
AFAIK, in marvel, you cannot change order or assist. unless that has changed somehow over the years. that was always the rule. i remember this rule cuz wizard said that the order switching glitch in mvc2(which allows you to throw out an attack on the 1st frame of the start of the fight with 100% consistency) actually violated the rule. but like what was said earlier, most people dont complain, or even notice, or just dont care
I dont want anyone to bark at me for making an uneducated comment, but doesnt every major around allow for Ultra change, win or lose? If that’s the case, why not keep it consistent…Just my opinion.
Get that shit outta here! This is the AZ thread, when we give opinions we do it without reading any of the posts and call people stupid!
Also, “seeding by the community” smells a lot like a PR statement to me. Isn’t the real reason for all this because Dev has so many games that it would be impossible to do anything but run the games concurrently? I applaud you guys for trying something new and innovative, and I hope it works out just like how you guys set the bar with streaming. The ability to seed yourself, however, makes it feel like less of a tournament and more of a convention. If that’s the direction you guys want to go, that’s perfectly fine, but those are my thoughts.
Edit: And obviously it’s way too late for my thoughts to change anything, nor do I want them to, but I figure you guys are looking for feedback to build hype and not necessarily accommodate suggestions.
yeah its pretty much allowed.
hmm, didnt know you could still change assist order in mvc3. that doesnt really affect anything tho, tbh. i actually like that rule
Sabre: The fact that it is there is exactly why I think you should be able to select your ultra if you win. I think that it was thought out at implementation in SF4. They had to think about it and decide it was the most logical choice for their game. I would argue it is the same for Tekken, just not as well thought out. Changing characters radically changes the match-up dynamic, while changing ultra for the winner, is a strategical decision that has to be made. It comes with its own risk and reward, as most players don’t play their back up ultra enough to really know it as well as their primary ultra. There is a comfort level that has to be surrendered to even accept the change and that is still, to some degree, a disadvantage.
Also, we’re not playing sf2. We’re playing SF4 and as much as I love old school stuff, arbitrarily shoehorning our ideas of how the game should be played into a different game just seems silly. I hate to assume that capcom is full of crap and accidentally left ultra select in. It’s there. Use it. Can’t say no to this, but yes to button macros. That is bullshit.
To chime in briefly about the Ultra thing, for SFIV specifically they put alternate Ultras in as a way to balance the game. They alter the matchup enough in some cases for it to matter completely, and we practice based on the assumption that we’re playing the optimum Ultra. A pretty big example is that if I’m fighting Bison U1, they’re free to the vortex, but with U2 it shuts it down. Why should I get a free win because of Ultra lock?
Just sayin…EVO allows it.
Got my plane ticket booked. I’ll be in Phoenix from the 26th ~ 2nd. I’m definitely interested in playing some games if I have time between finding a place to live and spending time with the girlfriend. Are there any events happening during that time? <3
I believe Haz is holding a tournament the night of the 26th, someone correct me if I’m wrong.
I’m totally cool with the Winner changing ultras, even if it does counter counter-picking.
And I was (sort of still am) skeptical with how the whole mini-tournament thing is going to work out at Devastation. I suppose, at the very end, the best players will prevail, but the top 8 has the potential to be reeeeeaaaaaaal lopsided. All due to scheduling. But I too am willing to give it a try and see how it turns out.
I’m kind of curious about the Devastation mini-tourney thing. Pardon my ignorance because I haven’t really been to many tourneys but why not just seed by location?
What mini tourny? I dont feel like reading back…trolol.
jorge, like i said, i ultimately dont mind. and its an accepted format anyway. im just saying that both sides have valid argument. and that both sides are also contradictory going from game to game. so you just go with what the community ultimately accepts, and that is to allow ultra switch
Heads up, I am going to be hosting this friday since I didn’t host tonight.
I would like to make this a little bigger than usual but ultimately attendance is what decides that.
I extend the invitation to anybody looking to play AE, MVC3 or BB.
I also invited some dustloop people because BB is actually a sweet game and I also saw some people from flagstaff were still around.
Please let me know if you can help with any of the set ups, and I look forward to seeing you all.
Also, since its friday it will be BYOB or you can give me some money and drink some of our beer/drink liquor like a man.
It will also go until whenever everybody leaves because I don’t work the next day.
