AZ Thread. hAZbats start this saturday! 1/21. Check First posts

Man. I was hoping arnul hosted friday. Whatever. If I go I’ll let the westside people know the day of if you guys need a ride. Don’t rely on me too much. Apparently I’m not the one to trust with that sort of situation.

About the seeding idea: instead of giving our opinion about it, lets take advantage of what we are getting. It’s impossible to segregate all of us in different pools, but we can adjust ourselves so the majority of our community isn’t in one pool. I personally would rather play more out of state players than rather to beat or lose to a player I play at local tournaments.

anyone have a black te bezel and black jlf ball top?

Reece n’ Kyle: Devastation is holding tournaments on separate dates/times that you have to register for, and you can only register for one for a specific game. Quoth the website:

As for why, I’m sure its to accommodate so many different games at the same time/same event. But I’ll let Robb (or any other Devastation spokesperson) answer that one…

Anyone heading to GW tomorrow night? I should be there if anyone wants to play

Friday is a no go for me Walter, I’m taking a break unless I feel froggy on Saturday. Also about that craigslist tourny I’m not really interested in playing a bunch of mashers. Dan and his sidekick Jake can take that I know them pussies need the dough!

@ Arnul…Lol. Im bringin Budweisers over in the next couple weeks. And what fuckin Craigslist tourny are you talkin about?

@ Nick…Ah, right on.

@ Armando…Friday, Im in there. I will show up about 9ish w/ my setup.

Reece, check munchi’s Last post. He has a link. Sometime in sept…

yo, let me in on the diesel lol.

here you go

what time do people usually show up to GW?

From the Devastation event page for MvC3: “The winner of each game must keep his same characters but may change the order and assist types”

Can change in MvC3, but can’t in SSF4. Makes very little sense to me. And depending on the character/team, changing these things can have an equally important value. Just ask Muji about using Doom’s beam vs hidden missles against runaway teams. The beam assist is generally the best for Zero, but the missles allow him to actually lock his opponent down long enough to get something started against tough to catch teams.

Maybe it is because I came from the Magic the gathering community, but I always make sure to look at the rules for each event I go to. Players in that community would just be foaming at the mouth to call for a judge and win based on DQ. So, I see having any rules against changing ultra (whether outright, or conditionally) just allows for needless abuse from the player base. So for tournaments the size of Dev, which need to be running smoothly, eliminating rules like this seem to be in the best interest of everyone.

^^ no fucking lie about that… TCG tournaments were ruthless by-the-book type shit. Every motherfucker wanted to DQ you instead of playing!

Come to Tucson for a day and hang out. AIAB Can be opened pretty much any day and we will make sure to wake up Latif and get him over

when you making a poongko shirt? what about a latif shirt?

(:

Muji, I don’t work for devastation this year but the 4 years prior I’ve done it. Robb has always seeded by region. It mixed up the east coast players and west coast players so they didn’t have to play each right away or even the cali players with the az players. Now there is alway more Az players than any other player so it makes it hard to do. We always did the best we could to mix it up the players. What caused problems is when people don’t put down the correct state they are from. I think this year with the 4 tournaments it gives people the ability to mix themselves up as well as seeding regionally after that.

I’m not speaking for devastation this year, I’m just say what we did in the past.

Hey guys, thanks!

I will try and rapid-fire response all the items I saw brought up, get at me if I missed something.

Rules in general:

I would prefer, in all cases, to keep the rulesets as close to the reality of the actual game. In terms of sheer accessibility, we have the best chance of seeing more players come out and play if the game is set up the way they play it at home. Now, for some of the games (Smash, Halo, etc.) the games “cannot” be played in their default environment and so changes are implemented.

On the other side of the coin we have items like Ultra selection, hell, even CHARACTER selection that are problematic. I think it is safe to say everyone would rather their opponent select their character/assits/Ultras before they do as it provides a tactical advantage - you can make changes to better your position, right? A game could stay at a stand-stil while players sorted out who sits where and who picks first if we did not implement processes to address them.

So, to be specific, Marvel and SSFIVAE

I, as a player, could give two craps about these particular rules - nothing that my opponent chooses is going to alter my game plan (as flawed and terrible as it is, ha) so, their changing things around really does not give me pause and, as such, I have no personal interest in seeing it go one way or the other.

As an organizer I would like to make the rules as easy and close to “normal” as possible and, at the same time, as “fair” as we can. I do and do not care about what other events utilize… sure, it is nice to see what they are doing and understand the reasoning for it but that does not mean it is the best choice in general or the best choice for our event. This can be applied to game rules, bracket rules (floating, etc.), console/system preferences and on and on.

Hokay, so.

SSFIVAE

  1. The most fair way seems to be that the winner chooses his character, chooses his Ultra (either one he wants) and then the loser chooses his character and Ultra. This is also the simplest way to go.

  2. The less favorable way seems to be winner chooses his character, loser chooses his character, winner chooses Ultra (either one he wants) and then loser chooses Ultra.

Are we saying most of you would rather go with #2?

Marvel

  1. The current rule allows the winner to keep his same characters but change assists and character order, even at the beginning of the game, just as the game allows

  2. Another way to go is that the winner must keep their first/starting character but may change the order of assists but not the assists themselves

I am not a fan of the second rule at all - it even runs counter to the idea of switching Ultras in SSFIVAE… I know, different game, but the concept and the potential change to the match dynamic is the same.

Feedback vs Hype

Yes, hype is great and would be nice to see people excited but I would rather have the feedback. Now, feedback does not necessarily mean a change will be enacted but at least everyone has a chance to voice their opinions and bring up points. It is nice to be able to consider contrary views we may not have otherwise encountered. Believe me, when drafting up items like rules we do sit down and go over what we think the feedback will be beforehand.

Community Seeding

Yes, we have always tried to seed by region… and it does fairly well. As Mike mentioned, people being untruthful about the locales, etc. can screw that up but it is a better option that just random seeding everyone.

By setting up the four qualifiers and pools underneath, if need be, we have the best chance of separating players that normally play against each other. It is up to you, initially, to try and get away from people you do not want to play. Sure, we have more people than tournaments so some of you will have to fight each other at some point but at least we were able to have another layer of separation in there.

Add to that, you are able to better schedule yourself… if you do not want to be at the 10AM bracket you do not have to be, it is up to you… to a point, of course. If you are greedy and want to play in 15 events you will end up there at 10AM one way or the other

I think I caught everything - I will scan through and double-check.

I’m all for seeding by region, but that’s definitely not what my post was getting at. No worries though, if I were to go any further with my point it would just be unhelpful and needlessly antagonistic.

Best of luck, though I definitely feel like option 2 is the better option. And I don’t even use my other Ultra.

I don’t agree with assist switching(not order change) at all. This has been a major rule for years when it came to mvc2. I know mvc3 has no arcade 2p mode to refer to(even though, 1p mode forces you to keep assist), but you know Capcom would force you to keep assist. It’s always been true with every game Capcom release.

Ultras are one thing since the game rules truly allow it. Plus it doesn’t factor in on most matchups. And even then, it doesn’t affect a match from beggining to end, since you need ultra meter to perform it.

Mvc3, otoh, changing assists(not assist order) dramatically affect matchups entirely. Some assists are great for combo purposes, some are better defensively, etc… Facing magneto or dormammu + jam session Dante assist is a nightmare for certain characters, like Wolvie. It’s solid countering. But against other character, using samurai gun assist(sorry don’t know names) is really Good at pinning down and also Combo extending if the player doesn’t need defensive options for his opponent.

On top of that, switching point character can change everything too, for the same reasons. Which is why evo rule doesn’t allow point character switch. It makes sense.

I mean, you might as well just let the winner pick an all new team, its the dramatic.

I think with mvc3 you should have to keep the same characters and same assists. Changing the assist order is fine but if you win you have to keep assists and point character the same.

Switching point character alone can be a massive counter, as is. You might as well be able to pick another team, cuz it has same effects.

Its just giving the winner of the first match, too much advantage. They already have the lead advantage and mental advantage as it is from just winning 1st game. And they also get the counter character advantage as well since they can counter in the 3rd match. But now they get a chance to also hard counter in the 2nd game too? It’s too much advantage.

Don’t worry, I will take care of Latif and make something awesome for him soon! <3

I don’t know if I can commit to leaving the Phoenix area while I’m in town. :frowning: I’m there for a short amount of time and have to house hunt nonstop until we sign a contract. But thank you for the invite! I will have plenty of time to visit when the move is finalized.
