I seem to always get hit by Abel’s Ultra II. I’ve tried hitting him and learned he has hyper armor the hard way. I’ve tried blocking it only to find out it’s an unblockable grab. I’ve also tried jumping when he activates it, and it seems he can wait before he charges at you! What’s a good way to get away from this move?
Armor breaking moves should work, but many characters don’t have ones that are fast enough to avoid the situation.
Switch to Bison and EX PSYCHO CRUSH your way out. Seriously, you’re considered airborne and you smash armor AND you make a fabulous escape out!
Without telling us what character you’re using, we can’t really give you advice.
Hard to do if he activates Ultra and you don’t have charge.
Not certain about this, but can’t you use the ultra flash to start charging?
Firstly, when you come up against something like this, the first thing you should do is open up training mode (perhaps with a friend) and seeing what works yourself.
- Being airborne helps as it’s a ground to ground throw, but neutral jumping can be punished.
- Jump forward over his head. Will do no damage, but is often the easiest and isn’t difficult to judge.
- You might be able to jump backwards, I’m not sure if it goes full screen, somebody else would have to check.
- shotos can just air tatsu out, does your character have a special that lets them stay in the air longer, or cover large distances? (such as Viper’s sj > HK burn kick)?
- It’s immune to throws, don’t use throw specials.
- Lots of characters will have specific options, such as Juri’s Divekicks, EX psycho Crusher, EX palm, T. Hawk’s dive, which break armour and either have invul or are off the ground early, check your character’s armour break move to see what happens (remember to test EX & non-EX versions).
- Many characters can just Ultra back (Metsu Hadouken, Violent Buffalo), if your character has a non-throw Ultra with solid range which breaks armour, try that.
- TELL US THE CHARACTER YOU’RE USING, and you might get some more helpful answers.
Yes, you can. To be honest, I’ve never even seen this Ultra in an actual match, but I’ve heard that it’s so fast that it’d be hard to gather enough charge plus be confident enough to go for an EX-Psycho Crusher unless he activates it from full screen.
It is pretty fast, another option is to use Bison’s Ultra II (if you have it) or just to teleport behind Abel, which is probably the funniest escape method I have used.
I love you Bison. Laugh your way out of ultras all day every day.
The characters I’m using is usually Chun Li or Balrog. I’ve tried jumping forward, but when she lands right in front of him, can’t do anything. I thought about it a little more… if I have meter, I can do her Ultra II, but if I don’t have meter, I’m not sure what would stop him if I can’t jump over him.
With Balrog, I’m really clueless, it seems like everything I’ve tried, I just get grabbed out of it.
That’s just the way how Abel’s U2 treats some characters. Chun Li and Balrog are both particularly susceptible to getting snatched up if you’re too far away to jump over him, yet too close to him to jump backwards to get full screen.
IMO, if you’re not charging already, it’s kind of hard to start chraging with the ultra freeze and get your attack out, the ultra is just too fast. Dealing with Abel’s 2nd ultra, all I have to say is either evade (by jumpting) or use a armor break/reversal attack. It really depends on how far away from Abel you are. You have to constantly be aware of the ultra, because if you’re throwing out a non-armor breaking attack, the ultra will most likely get you. IOW, it’s not the time to be throwing out random things (it never is, but moreso when Abel has his ultra). That way, if you’re close to Abel, you jump up/over him, and he wont get you with his ultra. If you half screen away, sometimes Abel’s will use the ultra, which will make you jump on reaction, and then let go of his charge when you’re on the way down. Tricky bastard. Then, when some ways apart from Abel, don’t simply try to jump on reaction, wait until he’s coming at you to evade. If you’re far enough, you just have to jump backwards and Abel’s ultra will have no chance of getting to you. On the armor break attacks to counter Abel’s ultra, can’t really give much advice, other than go to training and try things out for yourself.
It’s a grab that he can hold up to 4 seconds, and release on his own whim. He can also cancel it.
With Chun, throw an EX Fireball. The Ultra has super armor, so any rapid hitting move will stop it. Obviously projectiles are preferable here. I want to see a Chun and headstomp to safety off of an Abel as he rushes forward.
With Rog…honestly, the best thing I can come up with is a TAP. If you’re lucky, his invuln frames might coincide with when they release if they do it early. If not, you might get lucky and smack them with the punch, breaking the ultra. If it’s ever pointblank, just instantly hop over Abel’s head. If he cancels fast enough you might not get a hit off, but at least you’ve defused the bomb.
U2 has limited range, it does not grab full screen. If you’re too far to jump over him its possible to jump back away, either way jumping forward or backwards will get out of it easily. Also its possible to jump again as long as you empty jump, he has a very small window to actually grab you on landing.
Also Abel’s should never be throwing out random ultra’s. If you’re in a situation to be able to react to it, you shouldn’t get grabbed with it. Seeing as how fast it is it’s usually used as a punisher in which case avoiding it is impossible.
Yeah, okay, those characters might have a bit of an issue. Chun’s jump is long enough that I would expect to be able to jump either forward or back in most situations. Some bullshit shenanigans I want to try with her are walljump (if you’re in the corner), attempting to jump fierce, fierce him out of it, and doing nuetral jump, and cancelling the landing frames in to EX Hasan Shu*. The other option is to get better at spacing and just not let yourself stay in the area where you can’t jump forward or back.
I can’t think of anything cool for Rog beyond U1 though, maybe TAP, or jump back and attempt to TAP on landing* otherwise you might be in trouble.
*empty jumps have 4 recovery frames, but you can cancel these with moves or blocking, just not movement so my understanding is that if you empty jump and do a move with invul it will be harder for the abel to hit that than it would be to hit empty jump into another jump.
Jumping over him is the best way out I think
can chun EX SBK? Doesnt that count as in air? and isn’t it armor breaking?
Whenever an abel or gouken toss out a random U2 mid-screen…I pull the patented “no scare” tactic walk straight towards them for a second and a half and then jump in at them. Its worked pretty well so far…especially with gouken. Hello 500 dmg jumpin combos
Thats dangerous considering the people doing random ultras might not know you can even charge or hold them
It’s like the blind leading the blind in here.
I have a serious question. Did any of you guys actually “go to training mode” and test this out?
Or even looked at the wiki?
You’re advocating using a 10 frame charge projectile against an 8 frame grab.
You’re advocating using a 30 frame turn punch (also has to be charged) that’s not throw immune
You’re saying to do J. HP, HP to break armor, but abel crouches down during his ultra, and only one hit would tag.
Balrog’s headbutt is throw immune, but doesn’t really solve them problem. Stick with U1 or just guess jump/backdash. Chun could maybe headstomp, but you’d have to get lucky to bounce off him. She could also DF+LK, she’s considered airborne from frames 3-11. EX SBK would also work, you get enough time to charge.
