Random stony thought: Imagine an Avatar RPG on the Wii, using the wiimote and nunchaku to imitate different stances to cast spells, leveling up, gaining new spells & powers, collecting different group members, flying on Appa, Tales of Symphonia-style four player…
that’s the underlying weakness of water. its got a multitude of uses BUT you need a supply of the stuff.
the other elements are easy to get. fire comes from within, and air and earth are basically EVERYWHERE. (though the fire nation can artificially nerf earth with their steel construction projects)
you know, with this training, i see Iroh being aang’s firebending teacher
Actually that is the thing, water makes up most of our world and it appears the same in the Avatar world. Hell I think someone said it before, but water is damn near broken.
In the swamp episode it was shown that water benders can control water within plants, some of them can heal wounds and freeze water in under most situations. Outside of earth users, water users seem to be the only ones that can consistently use their element without channeling more. Most of the time Katara has been able to fend off waves of attacks with just that bottle of water.
I want to see a water bender use “the yellow stream”, or at least a chamber pot in an attack. And I bet they have Zuko train Aang, you know, to show his personal growth by having him let bygones be bygones.
but the swamp and the poles are specialized locations. i don’t see any water users sieging any fire nation fortresses or bases UNLESS its on the coast or by a river.
i also figure that toph is a top tier bender. she just puts down a thick dust cloud then proceeds with the rape. what’s limited visibility gonna do to a blind girl? (actually that’s how she dealt with the earth rumble wrestlers now that i think about it). the main weakness is that this won’t work on air users, but that doesn’t really count since aang’s the only one left.
I have to rank it as this so far:
[list=1]
[*]Earth bending: Not only powerful but possibly the hardest to defeat IMHO. The thing is if a rock is tossed at you, I imagine you have to exert more power to break off the rocks than say water, wind or fire. I think the latter elements could easily be deflected as we’ve seen in the entire series which seems to be rock’s inherent weakness. It’s not as fast flowing as water, wind or fire could be.
But what I like most about earth bending is that it seems to have the most visually pleasing stances and techniques of movement. I’ve always ranked the Katara vs. the Water Bending Master fight to be the best in the series so far, but just seen Toph MONSTEROUSLY RAPE the wrestlers with her subtle movements was just fucking awesome. Although that might be more of a stylized expression of her fighting style on the fact that she is blind…so a lot of slow motion stuff was shown. It’s quite funny though, it seems during the earth bending portions is when slow motion is used (re: Bumi Aang fight)
[*]Fire bending: No doubt, because look at it trying to take over the world. Even though a bit simple it does have it’s hidden abilities namely Azula’s lightening and blue flame capabilities and the comet we have yet to see.
[*]Water Bending: As said before, limited because it’s more of a defensive posture as seen on where they live and how they can defend themselves. I think water bending is the best in terms of pure ingeniutiy and ability to manipulate the water for obviously reasons. But moreso in their ability to create weapons such as saw discs of doom, spikes, whips, even a water octopus.
[*]Air bending: Sure some of the more cooler things happened with air bending what with Aang, but it’s far from being offensive. It might be due to Aang’s passiveness and non-violent tendacies but it is quite neat at times. I would however have to definately put air bending as the second most visually pleasing of the bending skills.

I’m beginning to think Toph might not be as powerful as we are lead to think. The thing is when we look at what she’s done so far, she basically fought earth benders. I would imagine that each style of bending has their own different way to express their power and with Toph, earth bending is pretty much like her element, she would know what earth movements would result in what earth bending attack.
But do you think he ability to sense vibrations through the rock would be too relied upon? Aang managed to confuse her when they first met. And I kinda question her ability to hear or sense clearly of things in the air even though she did manage to fuck up Monkey Wrester swinging in the air. Then again she probably felt the energy through the stone dust cloud. Any thoughts?
Unless her opponent is attacking by hovering and attacking, like Aang, she can pretty much deal with it. As long as they are touching the ground, or touching something ELSE thst is touching the ground, she knows what they are doing, just as well as if she could see, hence her blocking airborne arrows in The Chase. No dust in the air then. She seems to be a prodigal bender…benders who are naturally gifted and way more skillful than a person their age should be, as is Azula is with fire, Aang with air, and Sokka with gender.
Rhio, are you saying, Sokka’s a gender bender?
Joke based on a previous episode. REAL obvious if you think back…
But the point with Toph is that she can’t sense stuff that doesn’t contact the earth. Waterbenders can make the water hover and manipulate it purely through the air. And she can’t sense lightning through the ground, at least I hope not.
i think i just thought of the best way to beat azula. iroh said lightning has no control. so katara needs only to douse her while she’s charging up and ZAP. because you damn well better not fire the lightning gun underwater.
season 1 episode 4. sokka in full make-up/kyoshi outfit, right?
Yep. If I was part of that group, Sokka’d never hear the end of that.
aang got stuck in the exact same thing in “avatar day” so really only katara can bug them about it
we need to talk more about toph. i luv teh rock loli.:lovin:
Rhio, yes, I know, I was joking in my post myself. =P
I just thought it was funny since the “magic” users are called benders, so Gender Bender.
The thing with arrows is that they are pretty much straight. They don’t swerve or zig zag or grow bigger like the bending elements. So unless all bending is very similiar I don’t see how Toph could be any better vs. other elemental bending. Earth bending is one thing…it’s her element, but the others?
Perhaps I’m putting to much thought into something insignificant. I mean I don’t want to be the fucking moron to say “OMFG IN DE END UF BLIND BANDIIT, SOKKA TOTULLY HIT HER WIT DA BELT AND SHE KULDN’T SENTS SHIT! HOW ABOUT DAT DEN?” as evidence for her unable to detect all forms of bending. I know that was a use of comedy to end off a show, not some canon shit to be elaborated upon.

i found this spiffy fan-art and my jaw dropped
now i’m SURE iroh got mad tail in his younger days.
(also check the art there of the main cast. sokka = pimpmaster)
Eh, that art is ok. But not enough Toph.
Draw more, Zazz! Swimsuit Toph <3
Anyway, sucks, but next episode isn’t until the middle of July. ;_;
At least it’ll be a two-parter.
If you ever want to see a korean movie that’s a combination of Rival Schools and Matrix, with air and water bending, check out Volcano High. (I just saw it!)
That movie was a let down for me. Not enough fighting and some random as shit that could have been done better.
