Avatar Battle Challenge #4: Hang on to your Socks!

I am a serial post editor.

Mind your GRAMMA son!!

ok my bad for over-reacting. i didn’t go about doing some research before i posted. however, things i remember like the srk wallpaper contest i recently viewed (to hear about the drama), you were overly critically of the wallpaper maker who got first place.

i know i’m relatively new(post wise) to forums, so maybe all this negatively i’m feeling is just well the norm here. but i still stand by what i said. saying majority of the av’s here sucked is not the way to motivate ppl here.

as for me, i feel the positive responses helped me more to improve my av making skills. it encourages me to top myself from my previous creation.

as for av makers being stagnant and reusing ideas, i myself started by imitating other avatars. it helped me learn what they were doing and thinking and learn how they did it. and later on, i used what i learn to create things i couldn’t have possibly have done without that knowledge.

sorry for sounding retarded but i had a few drinks and i’m very sleepy. you guys all know i have much much respect for all of you, so sorry for going overboard without proof.

"Rikuo"

See Adam Epstein

This one is perfect and I love it. The center of attention is easy to spot. It’s very easy to tell what emotion/intention is being displayed. The background contrasts nicely and adds to the effect and “feeling” being portrayed in the foreground. The border is nice and compliments the background. The splotch of color over the background breaks up the gradient and gives the eye more to look at and keeps you interested (it takes away from the bland monotony, which is good). I feel this has a lot of personality, which is really good for an avatar, since I believe an av should reflect the owners personality well. I don’t know how I feel about the outline/outer glow used around the portrait, but overall I feel that I could enjoy looking at this avatar for a very long time, and therefor I put it in my number one spot. I really hate the title though, but I can’t subtract points for poor title. But otherwise, very nicely done.

#2
"Qbee"

See Adam Epstein

I had a lot of trouble voting this one for my second choice. There are a lot of dark points in the background that blend a lot with the drop shadow. There was a light source in the image which added a light white border around the upper right edges of the hexagon grid, however, there wasn’t any border to seperate the darker points of the hexagons from the drop shadow, which I feel takes away from the effect and annoys the eye (makes it unpleasant to look at). However, I do feel that the background is superb and works with the theme very well. It is also blended with the character art very well. Another reason I don’t like this piece is because I don’t like Q-Bee, but I’m trying to put my feelings aside. Over-all, I feel that this piece could have really used an original background, instead of the SRK default color, to contrast with the background and really make it pop – instead of using a drop shadow. I feel that using the drop shadow was sort of a cheap way of giving extra depth to the piece. But over-all I like it and I think it was well done.

#3
"The Mummy Arises"

Explore Adam Epstein

I’m not sure what to say about this one. The border is kind of plain, and I think something special could have been done with it, rather than just a plain white rectangle with black border. Aside from that, everything is nice. It has a really good theme, and has a lot of feeling to it. It seems really peaceful and sublime. The background is very slick and sharp, works great with the clouds, which are also nice and neat. The transparency with the clouds and the sprite is really good. The shadow on the clouds from the sprite adds a nice subtle effect. I really did like this one a lot. It’s not really shocking, and yet it’s gorgeous.

“Your Name Here”

See Adam Epstein

I had to give this one props because the artist used Zabel’s SP costume color. The border is plain, and it’d of been nice if it was something more than just a plain white rectangle. I think the text should have also been a different color. It seems to be just showcasing Zabel, and doesn’t have much of a theme or personality. I think this one could have been excellent if it just had a bit more to it.

“Cat License”

Explore Adam Epstein

This one is great. I think the pink glow at the bottom/center takes away from this peice a lot, though. The side bar is a really nice touch, makes the peice look like something from a magazine. I don’t know how I feel about the blue background with the blue hair… I just wish I could see three or four versions of this with different color scemes and no pink glow, because I really feel this one has a ton of potential and it’s just great.

“Talbain”

See Adam Epstein

Oh man, if only Talbain was a different color. The fact that he blends entirely with the background really makes this piece bland. The theme is kind of odd too. He’s covered in energy when doing that attack, yet you put him in ice. Hmm… I do like the ice a lot though, and I think the text is very nice. Props for calling him Talbain and not Gallon. <3

“Etch-a-sketch B.B. Hood”

See Adam Epstein

This border is too good. Absolutely crazy and I love it. It’s like a frame, really, which makes it look like an art piece. Sadly, the content didn’t really wow me. It doesn’t really look like it was made in an actual etch-a-sketch, because the lines are too smooth and curvy. The text also takes away from the theme. I think it might have been better placed either in the border or outside the piece. You also get un-cool points for using B.B. Hood instead of Bulleta for a title.

“Prince Of Hell”

See Adam Epstein

This is very well put together. It was a very tough decision for me between this and the “Mummy Arises” piece. I probably would have put this one in my third spot if everything just “fit” more horizontally. I don’t think the fact that it was non-prem size took away from anything at all, vertically. It could have also really used a border of some kind. And I think the “D” could have used a border of its own to seperate it more from the background (instead of the white back-drop effect). I’m thinking that if this was a tag instead of an av, it would have been really outstanding.

“Pink-Stalkers”

Explore Adam Epstein

Really funny and cute. I liked this one a lot. But eventually the joke will ware off, and what will be left isn’t something really pleasing or interesting to look at. It’s not ugly, though, it’s just not “pretty”.

I don’t really have much to say about the other ones except generic comments. If the artists want C&C they can post after the contest is done and I can try to review them a bit more.

I’ll post up my votes for the animated ones next.

ANIMATIONS

"A Darkstalkers Lesson"

See Adam Epstein

Too good. I see so many quality sprite edits. Not sure where the background is from or if it’s original. I’m assuming it’s from someplace though, so props for finding it and using it, because it works perfectly. If it’s original, then you are god. The theme is great and funny, the interactions between the characters is hilarious. The portrait of Talbain is priceless, I laughed so hard when I saw it. I certainly can’t think of anything that would make this better.

#2
"Demitri…Analyzing"

See Adam Epstein

I’m amazed at the coloring in this one. And all the extra effects. And the background. This peice is just so awesome visually. I think it could have used a bit more animation, like a crosshairs or line scan or something to make the scene/theme more computerized. I think it could have used a more interesting border. The outer shadow is kind of strange, but I think it works well. I like the text a lot. I don’t really feel that the background really fits the theme, but I just love it so much. Very cool av.

#3
"Darkness Illusion"

See Adam Epstein

This is really smooth and everything plays together well. She looks sad, and so the nice blue and turquoise color scheme really set a nice mood. This piece has a lot of personality and emotion to it. It’s not very complex, but something about it just makes me really like it.

“Emo Public Service”

See Adam Epstein

Awesome. Hilarious. Strait forward, simple, and very informative. Love it. <3

“Chase the Chuck-Wagon”

See Adam Epstein

Oh man, so awesome. Would have been so much better if the background was something else. It was just executed so well. Very accurate and creative. Ah, that background really kills it though, sorry.

Yeah, that background is from Bulleta’s ending. And someone asked about the Morrigan gif, it’s from the opening of Vampire Savior.

Guess I need to play VS more often. I knew about the intro, but not the Bulleta ending.

I was a little sad no one used my favorite characters. :frowning:

who donavan?

Yeah, but do you love us?

props to all the judges taken time to vote and critique

shatterstar, just been kinda busy with school… and honestly… 3s also :nunchuck: lol. But I’m tryin to start up the photoshop work again, check out my latest hip hop avs, and my stick art in the “show your latest work” thread… and i dont forget the one i entered for this… but ill kept my mouth shut about that.

XENO I DEMAND YOU RATE THE OTHER ANIMATED AVYS!! i wanna see what you wrote for mine :]

Cool avatars guys.

co-sign, altough mines would get harsh critisism .

Shhhhhh…he doesn’t have enough liquor in him to admit that. Not yet.

OC

Good job guys.

Sure thing.

“Morrigan’s Eyes”

See Adam Epstein

I both love this and hate this. It’s awesome and terrible at the same time, really. When I first saw it, I instantly thought of something out of Vamperella. The background is good, it’s dark and hard, with some red splattered around, which works well with the green and purple in the foreground. The red splatters in the background could use a bit more of a pattern to it, like blood splatters, since blood was used with the lips in the foreground. The color combination isn’t bad at all. It has sort of a weird Pop Art / Warhol feel to it that I like. She looks intoxicated with blood, sensual and inviting, as one would expect a succubus to look. Over all, I think this was well executed. I like the angle, it makes her look even more drugged. I think it needs a border. I sort of like the glow around her, but I’m not sure about that color, I think it could use something a bit more warm, or perhaps something a bit more dark. It’s really dirty and blunt and outrageous, just like it should be. The hair really gives off a crazy Halloween vibe, though.

“Air Zabel”

See Adam Epstein

Zabel is always comedy. I think to improve on this one, the background could have been darkened, and the flash flares could have been brightened and elongated to make it look like something out of a magazine or sports illustrated clip. There could have also been another character in the scene that he dunks over. It’d be even funnier if it had a frame with him hanging off the rim with one hand and doing some wacky pose. Aside from that, I liked it and thought it was funny. Just needed more to it.

“Demitri”

See Adam Epstein

Again, main thing that sticks out as something that is missing is a border. To me, a border is like a frame, and a frame is really important for just about any art piece, IMO. I like the character art, and I think the lighting effect is nice. However, It covers up a lot of the background. I think it might look nicer if the character art was resized so that both more of the character art and the background is displayed. The background and character art blends nicely. But it doesn’t really emphasize an action or emotion. It’s just sort of chaotic and random. The colors are nice, but kind of bland. Nothign really stands out except the bright red on the tip of his shirt. It might have turned out more dramatic looking if you had only blended certain parts of the character art with the background. Then also darkened the unimportant sections of the piece, while leaving the “focus points” bright, such as his eyes and/or hand. And honestly, the bat just really annoying. I think this would have been better off as a still av. I think you could have added in some brush strokes around him to give him sort of an “aura”.

“Spinnin’ Lilith”

See Adam Epstein

I like the background. The burst effect of the background doesn’t really go well with the action in the foreground. However, it’s bright, energetic, and wild, which suits the foreground. It seems a bit too bright, though. The name text is great, very easy to read, and I like the drop shadow and border. The text in the background is hard to read, though. It just feels really out of place. Also, the sprite is a little plain. I think it would have been a lot more interesting if you had created some brush strokes to emphasize the swirl/tornado motion that she is doing, and even better if they were animated. And, you know, plain white border is plain and boring.

“Karin Aensland”

See Adam Epstein

I love Karin. This is a bit strange though. I like it, but it’s just… strange. I like the effort put in to the border and the text, it’s nice. I think the VC combo bar doesn’t really fit well with the piece. A smaller bar (one that fits) probably would have been better, or a custom-made bar that fits more with the theme. I don’t know what to say about the background. And there really isn’t much going on, she’s just standing there. It might have been a little more interesting if she was moving around and doing stuff, with VC shadows trailing behind – or perhaps attacking some one from both sides.

“Come Hoes”

See Adam Epstein

The background is intense and I like it. The animation isn’t really special though, and the text is kind of bleh. So many plain white boarders, arg… I dunno, this could have been pretty good if you had really done something with the foreground instead of just slapping on an animation and generic border.

“Raptor Chainsaw”

See Adam Epstein

This seems really strangely familiar. I like it. The saw is cutting the “right way”, thankfully. I like the border and how it emphasizes the unique canvas design. The theme is good. But really, it’s just a plain sprite and a plain background, nothing really exciting going on except the canvas. And the excitement from seeing that dies off pretty quick. This had potential, though.

I really thought I’d see a Huitzil(sp?) av somewhere. He was one of the few characters NOT used, but he has so much potential with the transforming aspect of his animations. Car commercials/parodies, Optimus Prime calling him ‘Ese’, the sky’s the limit with this character. Only reason I didn’t try anything with him was time constraints.

nobody really cared for mine…but y’know what?

I don’t really give a shit, I gave it a shot, but I didn’t really put a ton of effort into it, and I’m fairly certain most people can tell which one IS mine (I kinda have a ‘style’)…

I don’t get too involved, and I just don’t really care if I stand amongst the rest of the av makers…

I do what I do because I like to do it…I never entered to win, and really, I whipped mine up in about five minutes…

next time tho, I know what I’m up against, and will step it up a bit…
