This goes back to a previous argument . . . I believe the game was Hokuto no Ken, in a Dustloop forums thread.
Someone asked, “How can the tier list Arcadia released possibly be accurate? The game hasn’t even been out for a week!”
And here is the answer to that question, again.
Arcadia magazine has Japanese top players working for them. They go to the location tests, and sometimes beta test for the game. These are people who have been playing fighting games for ages, and have all won several tournaments in their game of expertise.
Now, let’s look at the Guilty Gear Slash tier list, which was released in December, almost two months after the game was released on Japanese arcade.
S Class:
Ky
A Class:
Sol, Faust, Testament, Potemkin, Anji
B Class:
A.B.A., Millia, Chipp, Jam, Baiken, Johnny, Axl, Slayer, Ino
C Class:
May, Eddie, Venom, Bridget
D Class:
Holy Order Sol, Dizzy, Zappa, Robo Ky
Pretty much every top Guilty Gear player in Japan has written articles and contributed to the tier listings for Arcadia. This means that these opinions are based on the people who play in the match videos that PozerWolf watches on his PC all day while he wonders when he will ever make Top 3 in a tournament 
Even though this was written in December, the tiers have not changed much. I didn’t keep up with Arcadia’s tier list for Slash after this (since I wasn’t playing the game) but I believe Chipp and maybe A.B.A. went up a bit and that’s about it. Yes, tier lists are opinion based, but they’re based on people who play the game at top levels in the shortest possible amount of time.
If you don’t want to “believe” in tier-lists, that’s fine too. If you think Ky sucks, don’t use him, but we’ll all be busy winning tournaments while you are blaming the joystick for losing to that guy who raped you with Ky :looney:
You should play with whatever character you want, and remember that tier lists assume that two players know the matchup well and are playing at a high level. You can always outplay better characters with weaker ones, and no matter what the character, the better player will probably win, anyway.
And that is the last post I will ever write about tiers =P In America, tiers are just another scapegoat for why they should or shouldn’t do XX. In Japan, they’re used to acquire a deeper understanding for the game so that you can win with whoever you are focusing on.
So, if you believe Zappa and Holy Order Sol are the best characters, more power to you. If you really believed that though, you would have much more trouble understanding why you are losing.
Anyway, back on topic to “AUSTIN guilty gear”:
Can someone please tell josh to get a new actuator on the 1p stick on slash. I really want to play alot this weekend, but I won’t play on the 1p stick because it’s sooooo bad. Oh yeah, to everyone that plays 3s, i’m going to set a date for a ranbat this weekend at steins most likely tomorrow. Lemme me a time you think is best for a ranbat, it’s looking like it’s going to be on suday around 2-3pm. Double elim., single game. 5 dollar entry, winner take all at the end of the series.
I don’t really watch many matches on my PC (its kind of rare when I actually do see a Ky play unless a friend sent it to me thru AIM), and I don’t think I’ll ever make top 3 anytime soon, nor have I ever been beaten by a Ky player (only at one tournament which was in Dallas), and I never blame my stick for my lose… so I have no idea where your basing this on.
Unless you were just making stuff up to make me sound bad, or maybe these things were not pointed against me. I dunno, I’m confused now =/
By the time I hit Austin again, Slash will be out on console.
Hopefully no one has shit to do early May.

I hope you learn something when me, poon, kjunk, etc. take turns fucking you up at Slash. Maybe after you lose enough you will start to listen and stop pretending that you know anything about a game you have not even been playing.

What I’ve come to realize in terms of tier lists is that, although coming from a very reliable and trustworthy source like arcadia, they don’t mean much unless you’ve really played and grown to understand the game.
That’s why I say that tier lists and Japanese opinions are best applied as suggestions that are taken in light of personal experience, because without the personal knowledge and experience with which to take those opinions into consideration, you’re more then likely only going to have a vaguely theoretical understanding of why such a conclusion was reached. Tier lists aren’t a bad place to start, but unless you’ve played the game enough to understand the ins and outs, I doubt even the most informed tier list is that meaningful to you.
It’s the same with match vids. Unless you really understand the game well enough to understand why what the players are doing is good or bad, then you can watch all the match vids on the internet and it still won’t do you any good.
I guess what I’m saying is that watching match vids won’t make someone good, and neither will picking a top tier character. I think you have to be relatively good and sufficiently knowledgeable for any of those things to make a real difference to you. And by THAT point, you probably don’t need the help as much as you think. You can probably figure most of it out on your own, given enough time.
Umm, alright, I’ll stop talking about that, I swear.
You Austinites should definitely have tournaments. You have some good comp, and it’d be probably good to keep people in practice.
Hopefully I can hit austin sometime in summer(when I am free from school!) To have some matches over there. Would any of you be interested in letting me crash at your house or something?
