Austin Guilty Gear: Infoz here

If you think he sucks, then I think you really need to play the game more. When I first started playing Slash, I kept thinking, “Well, he seems the same, except for a few moves. How can he really be that good?” However, as I kept playing, I started noticing that he just seemed to do everything he used to a lot better than he used to, and combined with the fact that a lot of people were toned down, I really started to notice that Ky was one the better characters in the game.

To address the specific question of WHY, Fubarduck said that Arcadia magazine actually wrote an article to explain why Ky is considered so good now. From what he said, the article listed three reasons why. I don’t remember the order, and it’s going to be in my own words, but this is what he said:

  1. He has multiple, and GOOD, anti-airs. He has the standard forward punch, and the uppercut, but he also has down hardslash, which can be comboed off of for really good damage since it’s jump cancellable. He also has jump kick, which is a pretty good air-to-air.

  2. He is faster now. I don’t know all the specifics, but the startup on his run is faster, and in general Ky is a faster character now.

  3. He has great range. This has always been pretty true, but standing slash, crouching slash, standing heavy slash, sweep, etc, all have great range.

I don’t remember everything, but that’s the gist of what I remember. Maybe if you ask him, he’ll explain it better.

Still, basically, if you add it all together: A character with good anti-airs, he’s faster, has good range, and I’ll add in that he can do a VERY good job of pressure and/or zoning with his 6 different projectiles now, what do you end up with? You have a character that does an excellent job of CONTROLLING SPACE, and that can either soundly pressure you or just sit and turtle if he wants.

Oh, and I’ll add that a lot of people felt that his throw mixups were one of the best things that he had, and with the blue cancel on the throw now, it makes that aspect of his game a bit better and more worth it.

I think it is true that other characters got toned down, which makes his improvements even more evident.

Is he really “S” class? I don’t know, and honestly, I think a lot of tier lists are screwed up and constantly changing, anyways. All I know is that, if you play the game for any length of time, you’ll definitely see that Ky is MUCH better, and definitely one of the better characters in the game.

Yeah, but he had this kind of stuff before.
Only thing that makes his jump kick better is that everyone else’s j.K got worse.

His grab game has somewhat improved due to his speed… but thats about it…

He is usually out poked by anyone no matter what range.
He still has trouble against Venom.

Ky has gotten better, but is still crap.
Even one of the guys who reviewed the characters said that Ky was good at first (due to his fireballs and the fact that he got the least tone downs), is now saying that Ky is crap (which was Ogawa). There is a reason why he went from Eddie, to Ky, and back to Eddie, and it was because Ky is still crap.

And like I said before, his stun edge traps are in fact escapable (which is why you see less people doing them now).

Well, I think it’s harsh to call him crap. I think he’s really good, and I honestly think he’s one of the better characters in the game, but I guess it doesn’t really matter to discuss stuff like this online. Everyone will, and should, play the game for themselves, find the character they like and that they think they can do well with, and play them.

Yay, Austin finally got Slash. Hope you guys have fun with it!

Hsienn!!! Give Me A Ride To E’s!!! I Dont Have Aim So I Cant Ask J00

damnit now i can’t pick sol and jump around with airdust until i get a CH

r.i.p. xx :annoy:

Ky gets out poked by very few characters, even in reload. Mid Range has always been his strong point. The only characters that give him any overwhelming trouble at that distance are Eddie and Venom.

Ky’s improved slash Stun Edge alone makes his mid range game 1231421341 times better then it was in #reload, and it was already ok before. The recovery is almost Super Turbo good, so much that it can be used in similar manners to bait jumps for practically free. I’m not even refering to his corner BS, the opposing player has to specifically look for the projectile just to react to and punish a slash Stun Edge with a jump. Late attempts to jump over it can usually be blocked or Vapor Thrusted. Any instance when they’re scared and simply looking for stun edge’s lets you bait jumps practically for free or simply dash your way into close range.

Additionally, projectiles at mid range rarely get white blocked for variety of reasons, so any blocked Stun Edge can be followed up in a variety of ways for really basic and really affective attack patterns. Ky has complete control over his opponent every time they react to a slash Stun Edge badly, and reacting to it badly is largely what people are going to do. It’s far too risky to jump at Ky now because of the 124214124 different anti airs he has now (You’re down playing how good crouching HS is now, It’s probably one of the most versitle anti air maneuvers in the game at the moment), and if they just sit there and block, you’re giving Ky the key to walk all over you.

Tiers change, and I imagine Ky won’t be in his own rank for much longer. However, saying he’s crap is completely absurd at this point. It’s too early to make any extreme judgements, and every sign laid out in front of you is saying the exact opposite of what you believe.

WTF… erm… sorry to sound like a dick but I don’t think you understand what your talking about.

For one, Ky always had a bunch of anti-air options. The only thing different in slash is that his options have somewhat improved (acutally, I’m not even sure if they have improved outside of 2HS). And Ky’s Stun Edge game didn’t get “1231421341 times better” compare to #R. Even his slow stun edge is punishable.

And in #R, he could have all the range he wants, he still gets out poked by anything. His pokes lack so much prioty, anything beats so easily. And in Slash, he still has this problem.

Ky has gotten better, but he still isn’t very good.
And your making the exact same “extreme judgements” as I am.

I don’t think arguments based off of “it’s too early to tell” are that extreme.

Your reply isn’t even much of an argument btw. Saying “Slow Stun Edge is punishable” is only stating the obvious in an attempt to sound intelligent. Of course it is, but it’s practically a blind guess from mid range or closer.

Additionally, I’m not sure how you’re losing at mid range. Stun Edge’s beat 70% of the better pokes in the game in anticipation of an attack (And hey, it’s better and safer now). Standing Slash can be hit well before most characters are even in range for an attack. Ky can bait and punish whiffs better then most characters can using FD–>Backdash, standing Slash–>Stun Dipper. Early crouching Dust beats a large majority of the low attacks players dash in with and can even be verified into a Sacred Edge if you’re sitting on meter. It doesn’t make sense, how are you losing at this distance?

Ogawa IS an Eddie player. Maybe he just wasn’t cut out to play Ky? Additionally, Japanese opinions, which are often just a step ahead of ours, are good as a REFERENCE, but are properly used as something we take into consideration as we play the game and make our OWN judgments.

I agree with Adam on the fact that Ky’s midrange has always been one of his strengths. I really don’t see how most characters would be outpoking standing slash if you’re doing it at the right distance. His slash stun edge is really fast now, and the recovery on it is also really fast. If someone is punishing the slash stun edge from mid-close range, then you’re either being way too predictable with it or they are psychic.

And I don’t think we’re making extreme judgments when we’re both allowing for the fact that the tiers may be open and changing, but that, based on our personal experience, we find that Ky is noticeably one of the better characters in the game.

How the hell do you see Ky’s poking game, good?

Play a venom player, then we can talk.

Not to mention, stun edge is crap.
Better in Slash, but still crap.

Actually, theres been a talk about ky’s main game.
A lot of people are bitching about how shitty he is now ;(

This is still too early to judge that as well.
As said before, he has gotten better, but is still no where near top tier.
He still yet to win, any type of tourny. Not to mention the many people who went into SBO as Ky have lost (and now there are only so many left).

Pozerwolf, stop fucking talking when you don’t even have the fucking game and you’ve played it what… ONE DAY at TS6? Are you just reading what finalshowdown says or or following what that idiot with the forrest avatar says OR you can somehow read some japanese blogs and are just resaying what they have to say, cause im pretty sure you CANT read japanese!? Adam however, has played it and is the BEST KY IN THE NATION (<33)… Shut it.

EDIT: And I’m pretty sure most of the US right now can’t handle HOS… Even though he’s BOTTOM 3 WITH ROBOKY/ZAPPA (fubar told me this…) … Me and CrimsonD were rackin up hella wins with him at E’s, I’m pretty sure Crimson’s HOS would murder you for free and half of the US (but mine would own all the US… HEHE J/K J/K!!) but HOS = cheap in US, OMG WHAT DO WE DO?!? WHAATT! So, stick with US opinions, don’t listen to the japs. US sucks, so we have our own tiers. :<
And who are these people who say Ky sucks btw? I wanna know.

hey marn teach me ky. ill be the best ky in tx.

-chrisdat

2 Weeeks mr. DAT! You’ll be the best Ky in the UNIVERSE!

yessss

get on aim screwface! or aim me asap THATGUYMARN

Like others, I hear them as I go.
Also, is Adam the best PLAYER or the best KY PLAYER. There is in fact a differences.

Another strong argument that isn’t actually an argument at all.

We’re done here.

adam deats, get on aim scrub,

Adam, why are you the only person to write a comment BEFORE the post?! Gimme your aim name! Best Ky…in the world!

marn: You’re a scrub. That is all. =P

I’m gonna back up Ky being good and add one other thing to whats been said. His j. k is hella quick and seems to beat alot of things in the air. He’s too solid to be crap.

But is Ky really S rank as many people like to say?

PS: I really should change that avatar.
