Ok so as I said I would make it up to you guys for my past failure at york (which I hope you guys have read my apology and understand how and why that happened) and here it is.
I currently work at a banquet hall, which I have worked at for six years, and I spoke to my boss today of renting out half the banquet hall for a video game tournament. At first he was skeptical but I told him I would do the labour work for free and take care of the hall in general and he finally agreed. Although a bit pricey, I got a discount to make it bearable.
Now, I got 1 tv I can use, a HUGE projector, a smaller projector if the other one is too big to use. MANY powercords and extensions. If the initial room gets full (with a capacity of 140, I don’t think so but in cse) we can also use the lobby of the hall.
The date will be set some time in january. The questions start here though
Venue fee would have to be $10 but the place is really damn nice and it is going to fit us very well. But does the $10 venue fee bother many?
Do people want $10 or $15 entry for tournament?
Does anyone want a team tournament along with singles?
Would you guys want a bar or not? This one I must see for myself because I know there is a regulation that if alcohol is available then food must also be available. I most likely won’t have a bar but if it is really wanted I’ll try to my best ability. This may affect venue fee, keep that in mind.
I would need a tech staff member because I’m not that great with technology. I need someone who knows how to get a projector working and have a laptop for TIO and such.
I would need people to bring tvs who would be able to bring one? This is VERY important
If the date is January can we make this a big tourney? Can someone help me who knows this scene well to advertise to all? I would also need this person or others to promote to american players.
I had many questions before but I forgot a lot of them, if there are any further issues you guys want settled or discussed please feel free to post them so I can look into it. This is a GREAT opportunity so I want to make this a big and successful tourney. Please, please do not let my last tournament leave an everlasting impression that I’m incompetent at hosting. This will be great with the help of you guys.
This is aiming a little big. I’d be wary of spending a large amount of money, be prepared to take a monetary hit. Make sure the event is on a date that doesn’t conflict with anything. Make sure you have equipment guaranteed, you can’t depend on people bringing equipment at the last minute.
A bar would attract people, but would it make the venue inaccessible to minors?
I would suggest talking to some of the other well known event organizers around here like NeoRussell, Drekken, Dinoz, Emlarr, Myself, Nagata LockII (Just for advice as he’s retired now). I wouldnt’ walk forward on this alone. Thats just a silly setup for failure if this is only your first real event. You need to find people who have done it before many times to help you out.
I have hosted before. I have hosted 4 successful tournaments. But it was for a game that I knew about. So yeah advice would be great on how to run a successful ssfiv tournament. I’ll send you and others mentioned a PM after.
And at the moment I am contemplating to inculde another game to get even more people and cover venue fee. I’ll ask about the bar not allowing minors but then again that’s why there is ID.
And I am not entirely depending on people to bringing set-ups LAST MINUTE, there will be a thread confirming event soon enough and people will be asked to bring them then. You know tfns is great for providing tvs but I can’t see what you guys have done before without tfns, there were tournaments beforehand that needed the community to provide.
I hate to say this, but you don’t want to know what tournaments were like before places like pownz and tfns were around. Running a full tournament these days NEEDS official setups, there’s no way around this.
Just make sure you’re really prepared before you try to run this. Do some reading around the forums, there are guidelines for the accepted tournament rules around, as well as ways to contact the people above. Don’t rely on just this thread, do some looking around yourself. All the information is on SRK somewhere, basically.
Yeah, you don’t want a mismatched pile of equipment for a legit tournament. You have to make a choice. LCD or CRT. If it’s LCD they all better be the same. CRT, doesn’t matter too much.
If you’re just starting to take this seriously, I wouldn’t even suggest you make this into a major, because that’s probably just leading yourself to failure. Maybe a fairly big tournament for Toronto, but a major? Probably not.
Best idea? Come out to a tournament. See what the standard is. Get to know the community a bit. This is the only way you’ll REALLY understand what you’re getting into with this particular community. There’s a certain way things are run around here that we’re happy with and works, and if your event doesn’t live up to that standard, then it’s going to leave a sour taste in the collective mouth of the community.
We’re not trying to discourage you from running this event, we just know what we’re looking for in a tournament setting, and know the issues that can arise from these things.
As someone who has been to his aforementioned 4 successful tournaments, I can say that he is a top tier tourney host. As long as he knows what’s needed he’ll make it happen and he’ll get shit done.
If this is happening I’ll show and I’ll make sure to bring Windsor with me. I can help with tio and we may have someone who can help with the projector.
it can only be called the Canada Cup if JS Master is going to this tournament. Therefore it has to be after the first week of Jan since i’m gonna be in China during Xmas.
