my question for you is two fold… how old are you and do you play third strike competitively…
judging by what you just posted the answer to question two is no… Chun and Yun players don’t win effortlessly… you actually have to learn how to use those characters correctly to be good with them… is it easier to win with Chun and Yun? yes but is it effortless… no
as for Kula and Gato… i don’t play XI that much but from what i remember when i did play yeah they are fuckin better than like 90% of the cast but its still not a effortless win… its been my experience tho that Gato vs Gato is the only way to fight Gato efficiently… or a really good Oswald or Duck
They’re not effortless, not by a long shot. It’s just frustrating to put so much effort into other characters who are also high up there, but not have something that really allows you to keep up.
The rest of the char distribution might be kinda off by a couple because there are a few players in the schedule whose characters are not mentioned but here goes:
Orochi Chris - 6 (wierd how he wasn’t in the top 5 char selection in the guide…)
Chris - 5
Robert/Orochi Yashiro/Chang - 4
Beni/Mai - 2
Ryo/Kensou/Joe/Takuma/Mature/Ralf/Yashiro/Leona/Yamazaki/Choi - 1
The only character in over the half the teams was Goro, at 52%, Iori was at 44%
25 teams of characters were listed.
Compare that to 87% Gato and 72% Kula in XI.
So actually there is a lot more variety in 98 then XI, and that’s with 98 being older and more knowledge known about the game.
O-Chris and Chris are very near the top tier really, so it’s no surprise they were used by some. Surprised Terry wasn’t used at all, since he’s upper-mid as well.
I agree there is more variety with 98 than there is in XI. I think not having a tag system can also make players feel more comfortable putting one character they really like on their team, with tagging you sometimes feel you may be holding another character back by the quick shift opportunities you may mess with. (Just more to consider I suppose when choosing.)
Keep in mind that SBO 06’ was RIGHT after the game first dropped.
You can’t really compare KOF XI SBO 06’ variety on the same grounds as SBO 07’ KOF 98.
You’re talking about a game that was only around a few months compared to a game that has been played extensively worldwide for 9 YEARS. None of the boss characters were even used at SBO 06’ because many places didn’t have all of them unlocked and I’m sure if you had KOF XI at SBO next year you’d see some bosses.
If anything that amount of variety was good for a brand new game played at a world-class level. I’m sure if KOF XI was played by the community for 9 years people would understand that Gato and Kula can be beaten but that’s not going to happen because everyone wants to bitch, no one wants to learn anything new, and they all want to play the same old dogshit games forever.
That doesn’t make any sense. If anything, I find KOF XI MUCH more comfortable to try out more characters because you can tag/quick shift out of bad character match-ups.
I suppose, but I tend to feel when I create a cohesive team how does character A help character B and how does character A hurt character B, to me there are more chances for a character to hurt (or limit in this case) another character more so than in 98 where you’re thinking team selection purely on matchups, or stock building. Since in XI with quick shift combos the characters overlap and become extensions of each other a bit, forming new hybrid combos between them, in 98, they don’t overlap as much.
question about KOF 98 UM since they are bringin back the boss team will this be in it, lol?:

This doesn’t bother me in the least. I’ll play anything as long as it’s crunk as hell to play. But it will probably discourage others from playing the game in which case I won’t have anyone to play…so…will this be in it? hope not…
Speaking of how team members in XI complement each other, how do you really go about that? My usual team is Ash, Eiji and Terry(L), sometimes using Ralf instead of Eiji. How do I know if this team fits together or not? I’m still getting used to using QS, but is that the only factor?
There’s more to team mechanics than just Quickshift. Meter and stock management is important.
Starting off with Ash is great because he’s one of the very best batteries in the game . Eiji then can really use that meter to tack on his super moves to his BnBs for more damage. Zantetsu Ha is also probably the best projectile super in the game.
Meter-wise, your team is great. QS-wise, Ash needs his QCFx2+K super to QS…
Yeah if you’re looking for info on that kof4life, I’d ignore my stuff, heh. It’s what I believe, but I realize I personally don’t have as much experience as Return of Shiki, so he’s more than likely right on the matters of things one should consider when making teams.
I actually used to play that team for a little while, but I get too…antsy with my setups I switch characters around a lot. (Quite possibly too much.)
