THe last time they just let people pass legislation, it wa pretty draconian. When the most powerful and influential people that support gun control cite countries like England and Australia as places with “common sense” laws, then why shouldn’t I worry about what their end goals are. Those countries didn’t address the issue, they just said people are incapable of being trusted so we are taking them away.

Words matter, and people like Livewire who cite the UK as places that “did something” would be fine with, and support laws that would restrict rather than control and regulate. Why? Maybe because he doesn’t know better and is unfamiliar with what laws are actually in place, or maybe becuase the idea that I have the right to purchase said things isn’t worth the “human cost” (while ignoring all the people who have had their lives saved because they had the ability to defend themselves)

No level-headed, well-minded person needs a pistol or an automatic weapon that’s SOLE DESIGN PURPOSE is to kill people. Handguns and Uzis aren’t for hunting or practical uses, they’re solely designed to kill humans. People get them because you’re taught to be so afraid of everything down there that you think the only way to protect yourself is with something that’s just as likely to get you or a family member killed as it is to protect you.
Part of the US’s whole “rah rah guns” thing is because the entire media, news, and politics teaches, tells, and conditions people to be afraid. I’m not just talking the obvious culprits like FOX “News” or CNN, but I’m talking things from talk shows, radio shows, newspapers, “health shows”, a bunch of “reality shows” that try to show how dangerous and scary everything is. And this is without taking into account all the political things. Everything that happens and is shown is done to try and make Americans scared and think that if they don’t take up their arms or have armed forces take action that they’ll be in constant immediate physical and psychological danger. The entire thing of a “gun-based society” these days is largely a result of people living in fear and constantly being told that everything that happens is either an act of terror, an assault on their “freedoms and way of life”, on the country as a whole, or even on “democracy in general”. The latter of which being hilarious since the USA is a “democratic republic” and not in fact, an actual “democracy” by the definition of it.
Saying people shouldn’t have access to certain kinds of guns in general, and that there should be much tougher screening for who can and can’t buy guns isn’t “an attack” on anything to do with democratic freedoms. It’s something to actually LOWER the amount of things like this happening, protect people, and reduce risk overall. This shit about trying to see who has the biggest dick and trying to look tough by “here, look at our guns!” and “you can’t take away our gun freedoms!” is fucking ridiculous and has to stop. In fact, the ONLY people who should be upset about tougher gun laws are the crazy people that would be prevented from owning firearms as a result of such laws. Any rational, sane, person who’s not a physical danger to others would and should have absolutely nothing to worry about from it. I mean fuck, we have different gun laws up here in Canada and we’re fine.
This isn’t “freedom ain’t free”, this is “freedom to commit murder isn’t a freedom you get”, and saying it is only leads to a higher body count at the end of the day.
The question is, “How do we, as Americans, focus on preventing criminals and the mentally ill, not law-abiding citizens, from getting guns?” That’s where the focus should be.

The anti gun rhetoric has been older than NRA or fox news. Gun control wasn’t an issue even after the whisky rebillion, gun control wasn’t an issue even when you had whites waging attacks on southern industry or them taking over military bases. It wasn’t an issue when Indians where buying guns and killing whites to. It wasn’t an issue until blacks, or rather there’s a group of people that can’t have them so lets ban them or make them impossible to get.
In the 1920’'s, government changed it’s rhetoric and framed it as a criminal issue rather than a black man issue. Even when it passed extremely restrictive laws, laws that only affected law abiding citizens ( and a law that would have been in violation of the 4th amendment, no different that the current marijuana laws today, crime didn’t go down, and it didn’t stop the mob from growing in power. they still challenged the government, they still openly killed government officials, and they still did whatever the fuck is it they wanted becasue gun regulation only affects those who care enough to be law abiding citizens.
Gun control became an issue when blacks said, we have the right to buy these things, defend our community with them, and walk around with them. Suddenly laws had to be passed to keep “bad” people from having them. So much that Regan passed restrictive laws in California because niggers can’t have guns, that’s bad! The federal assault weapon ban passed in the late 80’s didn’t do shit to curb gang violence and it didn’t make them harder to get. The Mexican cartels still grew in power and influence under this time reaching their apex as one single entity, even thought the main sup[plier of guns to the country had draconian restrictions. Why, because criminals don’t give a shit about the damn law.

Columbine happened, north hollywood happened. You still had siginifiacnt mass shootings occur because the primary weapons used in shootings aren’t so called “assault rifles” but handguns.

I’m all for smart well thought out regulation, and I have already said what I think would work to maximize the efficiency of the laws without infringing too much on constitutional freedoms. But all I ever hear from gun control advocates is nonsense that always sums up to, you need to ban this because reasons that have no logical basis, but based on emotion rather than philosophy and law.
