First cop I like.
I wonder how you get more people like him into law enforcement and not those mindless drones, that either become a cop because they want to carry a gun, or enforce their will on others to feel better about themselves, or just to have a safe job.

So here we go. I’d like to have your opinion on this:
I had to pick up a delivery from a local post office.
When I got out someone parked his car behind mine effectively blocking my car from getting out the parking lot. So I walked to my car shaking my head in disapprovemt, getting ready to wait for guy’s return. To my surprise the guys got out of his car (I did not notice he was in) and started barking: “Got a problem…? Dont you shake your head!!”. This started an argument which lead to him sucker punching me in the face. Being a resiliant guy, I just put the stuff down I got in my hands and got ready to defend myself. After I blocked the second attempt to hit me in the face, he backed down. Being a reasonable guy, I did not hit back, even though I could have easily smashed the guy to pieces considering he was smaller, his punches didnt hurt and were slow enough to swipe away, I called the police.
And here it started to really bother me. These guys flat out refused to make a report out of this when they arrived. There were multiple witnesses backing up my version of the story, while he insisted on not having done anything. 
Granted… his punch left no mark or hurt or anything, but still… What the hell?! The reasons for that are my constitution, reflexes and luck. This should not allow such scum to get away with this crap. (Wow… I get angry while writing this).
Cops are lazy and don’t like to do shit. Nothing was wrong with you, so in their mind no harm was done and no need to deal with it further. That said, in defense of the cops, if he hit you and there was absolutely no mark left then it probably wasn’t worth them taking any substantive action.
The one time I got in a fight (detailed here) and the cops came they told us if we wanted to make and official statement or press charges we’d have to go down to the station.

I dont know… I still think not giving a shit, sends the wrong message to the guy, no matter if I was hurt or not. The next person he hits might not be so lucky.

A. Depends on the police Dept, most look like any other police office/division. It depends on the investigation and the protocols of that Dept.

A. How much is it worth to you? Real answer, No.

A. In Maryland the antidrug charges for soft drugs like weed is getting lax. You still get arrested if caught, but if you don’t look like have a large amount for distribution you most likely get community service.

A. I don’t think so. I think it is a largely a overreaction of 9/11 combine with the DOD wanting to offload surplus equipment.
That is the idea. it’s easier and cheaper for the DOD to off load their surplus to police forces for cheap than to mothball everything.

A. The Baltimore County Police does. From what I know, the Data-retention is run by the MVA (our DMV) and not the police so FOREVER…

A. Going to borrow AHVB_'s answer. You see a similar thing in the military. The difference is the Military has a better enforcement of their physical standards policy as there things the Military could do to their personel thats not legal for the police departments to do.

A. Everyone matters, but the Black community has a disproportionate amount of killings not just in general but by law enforcement.
It is an issue that exist and needs to be addressed on multiple levels.

A. Drug abuse needs to be addressed as a medical illness and not a crime.
And there plenty of substances more harmful than weed that perfectly legal (like Alcohol).

Shit the real police see in person or reports on a daily basis in it self can be almost PTSD inducing. Like Seeing Holocaust photos, but you know there actions and events happen in your neighborhood instead of a foreign country separated by decades of history.

Long story short unless that cop is your pal, Honestly means also he or she is more hard core and by the book.
The more by the book they are the worst they become. Like senior enlisted in the military, the more honest ones are the most likely the ones who get you busted.
The easier going cops often bend the rules, and to bend the rules the cop also have to sorta not bring up they are bending the rules.
Thus they have to be dishonest.
Like the dude earlier in the thread who though he could joke with a Cop and got searched again.
Once they see or hear something, even if there not much into it they are supposed to investigate.
If the cop jokes with you, try to laugh with them wish them a good day or what ever and go about your business.
If you start joking back about doing something even remotely illegal, they can’t take it at face value and have to assume you are serious.
The more honest the cop, the more they will follow every nuance of procedure.
And in something like a drug raid that includes dumping your shit out and smashing your TV to look for drugs, seriously that part of the procedure.

Cop the other day was asking me questions about my neighbor, I told him I know nothing and I don’t pay attention to those neighbors.
The cop wouldn’t even let me go for several minuets, he find it hard to believe I am not spying on my neighbors.
Neighbor was pissed at me too, she though I had narc on her. Even though I am white I know better than to get snarky with a police officer, I going to be polite and listen to directions to the best of my ability.
It does not mean I have to tell him shit.
Eventually there was a arrest at my neighbors house, I don’t see them any more and the house is back up for rent.
What’s with cops always demanding respect first? What have they done to deserve it besides get hired to a job high school dropouts can do?
I’ve always hated that shit. Twice in my life I’ve been “detained” by police because I refused to show them respect. Once it was me going to work and the cop asked me to stop and I told him bluntly, “If I’m under arrest, sure I’ll stop. I don’t have to talk to you though. So tell me am I under arrest or not?” He cuffed me, brought me upstairs to my apartment where across there was a domestic dispute that had nothing to do with me. The family who called the police looked at him incredulously saying, “Why the fuck did you arrest Raz0r? That dude is only home to change and sleep.” Cop uncuffed me without even the decency of an apology. I just told him fuck you and went to work.
The second time was just shy of a year ago. I was coming down a roof and a cop coming up to break up the party stopped me. Me, one person of easily 200. Asked what I was doing there, I told him I didn’t have to tell him shit so either arrest me or let me go. AGAIN, grabbed but as soon as he got me to the streets and I asked him what I was charged with he let me go.
Cops gotta start acting like neighbors and less like authoritarians or they can go kick rocks.
It does not matter if they deserve respect or not, you better have a healthy respect for the guy who has a loaded gun and the means and mentality to use that gun on you.
Oh and no, in most states you have to finish High school, some departments also require a degree in criminal justice in order for you to be come a cop.
Razor your one mistake is you decided to challenge him with the shit “either arrest me or let me go”, depending where you are at the police can hold you for up to 3 days without pressing charges.
In my neck of the woods they can only hold you overnight. Get snarky with the cops and they will cuff you and treat you like a dirt bag till they are satisfied or feel they have to bring you into the station.
Hell I been told by a cop “you did nothing but we are going to detain you for 30 minuets anyways so just wait here”. And it only gets worst the higher up the chain it goes, so your local city, country small town cop is going to just waste 30 minuets of your time. Get to the Federal level, the police/agents then will question you with a thousand and one obviously dumb questions that only makes sense if they think you are a foreign spy or terrorist, perhaps bring you in and question you for hours.
That’s pretty much my point.
Being compliant and courteous still gets you fucked over by a so called ‘civil servant’. Admission to wrong doing is a surefire way to fuck your own day up despite the levity of a crime.
