Ask 801 Strider

U2 still has 10 start up frames :frowning:

I don’t think Abel wins against Adon, but I’m wondering why you think it’s one of the worst. Akuma still sucks to play against, I think the Chun match sucks along with Gief. In those 3 matches I can’t figure out an actual strategy. Every win for me in those matches feels more like capitalizing on their errors than forcing errors to take advantage of (or at least until I get a knockdown in the case of chun)… if that makes sense. I also feel that way about Honda a little bit, but then again I have no Hondas to consistently play and believe that if I messed with remaining neutral/focusing as opposed to blocking his butt splashes the match would be easier.

That being said… with such few bad matchups… I actually think Abel is REALLY… REALLY good.

Oh last thing, I can’t test it now but I remember messing around in training with guy’s elbow drop/air throw and got some interesting results if I timed a late cr.short. (Getting them to whiff/trade favorably). I don’t know how consistent it is but just wanted to make a suggestion to add to the Guy discussion earlier.

I didn’t think Adon was THAT bad for Abel at first…and then I went to Japan. The match-up is stupid…he controls the pace right from the beginning. You have very little options to stop his Jaguar Tooth bs, you have to either stuff it with a perfectly timed st.mp / cr.mk, or lk.roll out of it, neither of those are easy. The thing is, he doesn’t even NEED that move to prove to be a pain, he can just sit outside your step-kick range and wait. He doesn’t need to take initiative, he can just react to everything you do with something that out-prioritizes what you have. Add his fast walk speed + his JT, this match-up is a bitch.

I think I went like 10-2 with Japanese Adon players (one of them was -R-, if I’m not mistaken). I thought it was just me getting blown up, so I started watching Nekojita play the same dudes I was getting beasted by. Nope, same shit…he got blown the fuck up too. I don’t think he won a MATCH against them, and this is fucking Nekojita, not some random Abel dude. He just couldn’t do anything once the game got to mid-range. He just couldn’t crack their defense, and couldn’t escape their offense when it started. Mind you, Nekojita’s footsies are amazing, so it’s not like he was just herpa-derping his way in, no, he was meticulous, and he still got destroyed. I think this matchup will get worse with time as people discover new tech, the match-up is already really advanced in Japan, it just needs to catch up in the states.

As for Akuma, he’s still fucking Akuma, he still has the same bs that killed you in the first place. Abel doesn’t have a 3-4 frame far normal to make the -2 st.hk nerf significant, he still gets blown up by it. He still gets blown up by the Vortex like no other. This match-up is still ass, but unlike other terrible match-ups in the game, you can win off one hit-confirm into another correct guess…it’s just really hard to get that opportunity against a decent Akuma.

I don’t think Geif is THAT bad in this version. Sure, Geif might have an advantage here, but it’s not so significant to say it’s worse than 6-4, you have options here. This is one of those match-ups that got better with age.

Juri is also a hard match-up, she is one of the few characters who can actually keep Abel out…plus, her fuzzy guard setups are pretty fucking hard to stop once they have that knockdown.

Besides that, Abel is top, he loses a couple match-ups while dominating the rest. I love it.

Mike chows Abel vs gief is 6/4 chow lol.

+1 to adon being one of the worst

Sooooooooooooo I take it the Rufus matchup is pretty ass since I can’t find many helpful vids. Got any useful tips?

rufus matchup is only slight advantage rufus, it isn’t bad at all. there is a lot of knowledge out there about it already if you read instead of watch.

OS throw tech with c.mp & c.fp to stop the dumbass throw/dive kick mixup. meaty sweep from Abel is safe from reversals. EX messiah will hit you for a few hits and then he will go over your head, free punish. you can also safe jump OS sweep and get the same thing and punish backdash as well but the timing is pretty tight to get messiah to whiff. you can anti-air him easily, you just have to use all of your suitable buttons. c.mk, s.mp, s.lp, neutral and jump back fp. etc.

Well I read but watching videos helps me get the feel of the match-up rather than the black and white how to play. When I can see multiple videos doing footsies and stuff I can steal it and throw it into my own game. Thanks for more tips always welcome!

You play anything besides SF, Strider? KoF or the like?

part 3, 1:10:00 if you want to see how to almost win two sets against ricky, and then get dumped on.

How do you keep Cammy out? Shit’s free once she gets to sweep range against me.

What are the key elements to the Balrog match?

I turtle/run away with Fuerte and Vega. I like doing this to create an opening and then do a complete 180 and attack.

In other words. Is there such a thing as a turtle Abel?

Yes (i guess?), Nekojita (the #1 abel in JP) is often called a turtle too iirc

There’s no need to rush down all time with Abel, in a lot of matchups if Abel has a life lead, he can just chill back…

Its all about finding the right moment/opening and getting the high damaging offense to start off…

99 secs on the clock for a reasonnnnnnnnnnn

For Cammy…it’s hard, not gonna lie. First goal is simple, keep her grounded. She can’t really get in on Abel without jumping, she can’t really walk him down like other characters because her normals are ass and she risks eating a 30-40% combo. Thing you have to keep in mind is that she IS GOING TO JUMP, no matter what. Why? Because she has no reason not to. You don’t have a dp, you don’t have a amazing AA normal like Boxer/Sakura, and your character is a fatass.

Be ready to jump forward HP as soon as you see her leave the ground, since it’s pretty damn hard to AA her dive kick through normal means. You could also try charging a focus attack as soon as she does dive kick, most of the time you should be able to charge to lvl 2 since her recovery isn’t amazing. Once you take the match to the ground, you have way more options while she just has shitty OS normals and the threat of a random ex.dive kick (which is actually a legit threat). She doesn’t get a reward as big as yours off a hit-confirm, so as long as you aren’t running into random pokes and shit, you should be fine. Like in every match-up, stay right at the tip of Step Kick range and dance around there, you should be able to counter most of her pokes on reaction and also scare her off into backing up into the corner.

When she actually gets in, shit…dunno what to say. Just block, honestly, and sprinkle in a couple jump-back jabs in the mix as well, since those will counter both throw and ex.dive attempts. She has to either hit you with a low (cr.mk, which ends her pressure) or do something crazy like dash forward dp to counter your jump back. She’ll have to guess as well and shit won’t be completely auto-pilot for them, which gives you more breathing room.

Remember to punish everything with MAX damage, she’s a pixie character and easily dies off 3-4 punishes / combos. Punish blocked dp with dash up cr.hp and badly spaced arrows with cr.hp as well. Do your standard Abel shit on her on knockdown, if she guesses right, oh well… she just reset the match and it’s up to you to get another knockdown. If she guessed wrong though, she just ate 30% and is in another mix-up…

This match-up is winnable, it’s not like in SSF4 where it was easily 7-3. This is still a hard match-up, but if you use the right tech it won’t seem as tough as Abel’s other bad matches.

As for Rog…I’ll do a write up later, since I feel like there is a lot to discuss / dissect with that character.

quick addition: you can beat or at least trade with all of cammy jump-in’s, including dive kicks, with neutral stand forward. Only exception is her baiting it out with a super early EX dive, which will make it whiff if you do it with normal timing.

Mike chow in the motherfucking building!

I played vanilla MvC3 when it came out, but stopped after Logan + Phoenix tech got discovered, I didn’t really want to deal with the stress/bullshit of competing in something so random.

I’m picking up KoF13 and SFxT (if it’s any good). I’ll probably sign up for KoF at future majors. Ash/Kyo/Ex.Iori FTW

Also…MIKE MOTHAFUCKIN CHOW. You lost me money vs Valle, asshole. I expect a full refund.

you should know better than to bet on me. unless your name is Air, and you’re side-betting with Jebailey’s friends for more than the actual MM, I am guaranteed to lose you money.

hmm did they buff ex TT’s range?

i always thought its similar to MP TT when it comes to range (it has the same damage as HP TT now we all know that)

but it now has the range of a LP TT…

i found this while trying out the close st.mk xx TT stuff… only LP n EX can land, rest will whiff

then to make sure i tested with point blank cr.lpx2 TT, and MP whiffed while EX landed… woohoo?

edit: hmm so i was told(havent test it myself) that ex tt range is between lp and mp.

LP = 1.33
MP = 1.13
HP = 0.93
EX = 1.27

Don’t know if it got buffed, but that’s what frame data says.
