define “rewarding enough” because that shit is qualitative as fuck
are rpgs “rewarding enough” when you level up or beat a boss? let me tell how rewarding it is to beat that final boss in an RPG when that boss is designed to be beat lol. That’s really rewarding…
when you play fighters and you sit and grind on execution\combos\strategy, you level up. You gain access to things you couldn’t do otherwise like in an RPG. When I sit in training mode and I get a new trick to use during game play, thats like leveling up my magic or attacks in an RPG because I can do things I previously couldn’t do before the level up. And let me tell you how good it feels to beat god like players in your area or “bosses”, its far more rewarding than beating some shit boss in an RPG that was DESIGNED to be beat. People who play fighters train up as well as they can to minimize losses. RPG bosses are never like that.
I find that fighters are incredibly rewarding because of the lessons you can learn. While games are designed to kill time, some games like fighters\chess teach you life lessons that rpgs or other “rewarding” type games NEVER give you.
the “reward” is all based on perception. If you think some cool sounds and a new magic spell in an rpg is “reward” by all means, that is your perception. If you think fighters don’t “reward” players, I can’t get you to perceive that but regardless, there is a reward there.
There are easier ways man!
You’re right, it needs to be a one button super  !!!
Like PlayStation All Stars
I think what he means is that a fighting game doesn’t have concrete rewards like most other games do
In most games the reward for beating a boss is moving on to the next level, getting to progress the story, getting to watch a cutscene of the main character fabulously exterminating the boss you just killed, etc.
In a fighting game the most concrete reward a game can usually give is a new character and from what I’ve seen the average gamer is more inclined to put time into a fighting game if there’s character’s to unlock otherwise the reward is usually articulated as “you got better”.
Of course the above is subjective and some people may not find the typical “I get to see a cutscene” reward as a reward but for the most part a casual gamer is more likely to choose the games that have rewards like the above then a fighting game.
In retrospect, I worded that wrong, I meant that it really is more or less for those games before 09 getting a hold of things that aren’t easy to grasp by casual standards. I mostly meant Strekken because of the fact with gems and bullshit like right stick combos, & UMvC 3’s easy mode. Some games are easy for a casual player to grasp, like in 3S how you can play screw around and still have fun. If I sound like a dumb fuck, fell free to correct me, cause I have only played 3S & MvC2 since 2007.
Smash is a fighting game.
Fighting games vary in difficulty.
Gems don’t cater to casuals, unless you mean the assist gems that are pretty much useless. Boost combos can be seen as a form of training wheels, but they do less damage and cost meter to use.
As for Marvel, Simple Mode is good for people that just want to mash buttons. Guess what? MSHvsSF and MVC1 had Easy Mode as well.
I think the problem boils down to the majority of the gamer crowd being lazy and unintelligent people. It makes them value things like getting a new spell or seeing that unlockable cinematic over actual self improvement. For fighting games to be played at a decent to high level, it requires practice, strong awareness and self reflection (among other things) and these things are really absent in most gamers. If fighting games want to stay as a “legitimate” genre, they shouldn’t dumb themselves down even further to accomodate these kinds of people. It’s the people themselves that need a different mindset…but unfortunately it’s not possible to change the mentality of the masses. Just look at this ridiculous thread on gamefaqs I ran into about P4A, the topic creator is pretty much the type of player I’m talking about.
http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/641697-persona-4-arena/64842222
Games like PSAS and Smash help accomodate those players, but they cross the boundary between a legitimate fighting game and a party game.
Dam that’s a lot of pages of a circular argument. At the end of the day, fighting games don’t appeal to everyone. Gaming tastes are different these days. Just nature of the market compared to days of old.
Emil, that’s not a ridiculous thread at all, it’s just a guy who’s a fan of Persona who’s giving the game a shot out of series love and getting mollywhopped online for his complete and utter lack of background in fighting games and feeling discouraged. He took it upon himself to make a thread about, which indicates he gives a shit, even if only a little. It’s really not a good example for what you’re trying to say.
Thank you. Your words pefectly summarize my feelings about this topic.
Well I think it illustrates the kind of people I’m talking about pretty well, though there are better examples of course. Later on in that thread, he discussed the fun and reward he feels exists for getting good at the game and pretty much finds no value in it. He doesn’t care about self improvement, as he says he just beat story mode mashing out auto-combo and it’s frustratingly not working out for him against other players online. So his answer is to ragequit matches when things get too cheap and has now quit the game.
The topic creator, assuming I’m reading and understand how the gamefaqs forum is laid out, never posted anything else within the 3 pages of that thread. So I still don’t see how it illustrates those kinds of people. If anything the other posters in the thread work against your point as well given they they openly admit to not being a fan of the genre and just are not that into them, hence their lack of self improvement since what they want out of the game(story) they already completed. I see what you’re saying and I agree with it, just not the best of example and I think confusing those kinds of people(aka those in it for something other than the pure competitive value) are misrepresented. My brother and his friends have a blast playing shitty mvc3 with each other. They are terrible at the game, but that’s besides the point really, they get what they want out of the game and I think that’s the part of the casual player people seem to not want to realize. Those who the game appeals to beyond the simple enjoyment of beating up on friends or casually alike, will explore the game further. I mean, why the fuck are we on SRK if that is not how this works.
Might want to tone down that entitled exceptionalism some. FG players aren’t actually unique special flowers with superior discipline judgement and I presume pecs.
When are people going to learn that topics like this ALWAYS descend into bashing SF4/MVC3/SFxT?
I’ve got pecs. You ain’t artsier than me.
still cherry picking arguments I see.
You could go after my posts but I think my point is so good, there is no way you can argue against it. So the only way you can continue your argument is to argue people who won’t argue my point.
Shoultz, real or not, has had that account permabanned and will be rebanned on this site on sight until he resolves the beef with the supermod that banned him. Don’t waste our time. If it’s a fake Shoultz, good god man you need a hobby.
