Are fight boards (aka Hit Boxes) cheating? (Experiments and Guide)

If you enter a tournament and want to win cash, then things like ‘respect’ go out of the window. You do what you do to win, even if it means exploiting certain game mechanics from certain games like charge partitioning, senbon punching, kara’s, fuzzy guarding, unblockable hit setups, pressing :df::df: to dragon punch, getting out of the corner by doing a LP Mexcian Typhoon, picking O Sagat and spamming Tiger Shots, OTG’s on Dudley and Hugo, blah blah blah.

As said earlier, if people think that using a hit box will help them win then all the power to them. I would absolutely love to see people walking away with SBO trophies after using hit boxes as it would bring attention to the concept that traditional arcade sticks are not the be all and end all of controllers.

If it’s in the game and not banned by tournament organisers, then exploit everything to the full. And I hope to god that hit boxes are not banned. They certainly won’t be in UK Neo Empire tournaments, I can guarantee that now.

Yea, only jin’s astral is comboable… so, it doesn’t matter. However, someone should see if this thing works on sf3:third strike… just to gage it on an emulator or something.

Also, taokaka’s motion is charge 4, then 218 press that.

Wow did i hear someone say guile can walk forward freely while still charging? If so, that is definitely cheating. Thats something no one should be able to do.

Regardless if its done as a direct hack, or just working within the “system” itself. Cheating is cheating.

This is very fascinating indeed. Are you guys still in need of a PS3 hitbox? Because I will be getting mine put together within a month or two :V (with an axisdapter+sixaxis)

As for input display. Good input display should show, once a frame, what the game sees. Yes input displays only by default shows directional presses, not directional holds, if you press another direction, the game will always show all directions being recognized at that time. All a charge move is, (when Input forward, has there been back for x frames) or a block is the game checking what inputs are in the buffer.
Not every game has input display, but so far, all of the sheninegans we’ve discovered stem from the fact that the game registers two opposed directions at once. While I think your method of testing if great for games that don’t have input display, (ah3 didn’t) I’ve yet to see any socd results that disagreed with a game’s input display.
In short, I think that a game is Socd exploit vulnerable if, in input display, the game ever shows two opposed directions registered on the same frame.
Of course, my “input display” theory only fits the data I currently know of (bbcs, marvel3, ssf4) if there’s a game where the input display and socd exploit behavior disagree, please correct me.

Unfortunate news about HDR and MvC3, but at least we can expect MvC3 will be patched soon. Technically this is just an unintended software glitch, but a more boring and game breaking one then something like kara moves or charge partitioning. Those glitches add to the game, this one takes away from it (in the case of dummy crossups, making any game that much more defensive oriented). As many have said this is not a controller issue, it’s a software issue. I don’t have much hope for HDR being patched but I hope future games will be developed and tested with these things in mind.

Did you test doing reversal moves while blocking? Can you hold downback while inputting a dp motion and still block (I heard this worked in the PC version of SF4)?

I think it’s hard to say if this is bannable considering all of the other things the fighting game community embraces.

you can’t

but you can input a srk without leaving crouch stance and with a maximum of 1 vulnerable frame regardless of which controller you own

db -> crouch block
df -> crouch vulnerable
db -> crouch block
df+punch -> invincible startup frame of srk

Can we ask Capcom for a patch on this? I really don’t want to use my Hitbox to play MvC3 now if Capcom forwent proper input handling like this. SFIV had it right with their input system. I’m sure they could patch their input system for something like this.

If you ordered a Hit Box from the Huffer brothers you have absolutely nothing to worry about when it comes to dummy blocking. If you made your own, if you used the Cthulu board you’re fine. Just something to keep in mind.

I used my TE’s guts. So no. I’m not fine. :stuck_out_tongue:

Uff, so to have the double inputs we need to build our own fightboard? :’(

I totally agree.
Not only because of the hitboxes, but also because, if this happens, it will establish a previous record, so future controllers that will permit an even better and faster control will be accepted more easily, without too much hassle.

Actually for me it’s the opposite, I havn’t used an ABC controller except for a keyboard, but I find that I do better with motion characters in kb, and better with charge characters on stick…

I’ve said this many times before and I’ll say it again… for me, my preference is Stick(Right handed) > keyboard (left handed) > Pad (Right handed). ugh… pad…

Skull girls will be fine. (post 385, Mike Z confirms it’ll be fine)

@samaytg1 are we sure about this? Maybe he should send it to me for some testing JUST to be on the safe side.

So I just got back from DFW Bar Fights III (Big props to Jeff and Kent, shit was great, hope we find the scumfuck that trashed the bathroom so we can go back to the backporch). I willingly stayed out of the Marvel 3 tournament as a show of integrity, even though Kent and Jeff expressed that they still would allow fight boards even in the MvC3 tourney. Big props again for showing your support for alternate control schemes. More tourney organizers should be open like you guys. ALSO YO GET HYPE FOR DFW TAKING HOME THE HEISMAN STICK, DON’T LET SAN ANTONIO NEAR THAT SHIT.

Shoutout to DFW Jay, recorded me in casuals getting bodied by BurnYourBra, also let me have some free camera time to show some of the crazier stuff I found in Marvel 3.

Yo guys, don’t stop emailing capcom about this.

SOCD’s are the problem, not fight boards, and the fact that SOCD’s are a problem is something that can only be fixed by game developers. Let’s see if we can pressure Capcom into fixing Marvel 3 so fight boards aren’t artificially tainted by SOCD’s in time for EVO.

I fully expect that if this isn’t patched before evo, crossup defense buttons will be added to a majority of Te’s.
I’m going back to stick myself for marvel, at least temporarily, but that won’t help for more than another week or two.
(At least I can play arcana on a fightboard).
And yeah, let’s all just hope for a patch.
(I don’t really want to see the marvel metagame once crossup aren’t a viable strategy)

Regarding the EVO, I’ve been wondering: why didn’t anyone add buttons for blinking on their sticks last year? We knew that that was possible, yet I didn’t see anyone with that…

This seems similar to something like roll cancelling. The main difference is not everyone has access to the ‘glitch’ because it is controller dependent. I am not sure how important this is in the argument for whether this should be banned or not. My gut instinct is that it should be allowed. We don’t want the SF scene to turn into the Smash Bros scene where we have to ban things.

The point I am trying to make is it isn’t ban worthy and not that they shouldn’t patch it, although the game won’t be broken if this stays in put.

I wonder if the hitbox can be used to make team air combo’s impossible by countering all directions at once, anyone know?
