HDR is the greatest thing to happen to ST since ST came out in arcades, that is a big deal. I mean if you don’t like Remix mode you can play classic, where’s the problem? I find charm in both versions. HDRemix gives me the Guile I always wanted, Blanka is a house, and Honda doesn’t fold to fireballs, classic is well… classic. Heresy + Blasphemy.
KOF 02’ is on par with 98’- I think it’s so popular along with 98 and to a lesser extent XI because, well, fuck a storyline I just want a good fighting game. Also strikers are lame. I’m not worried about 12 I’m looking foward to 13 though. Work those bugs out get up to around 36ish characters in high def then call me.
At no point did I say anything about EITHER of them being good games. I said that they did what they were made for, and that was to BRING IN OLD PLAYERS(our old scrubs and casual playerbase, for the most part). Can you deny that more people are playing and talking about SF now than they have the whole time SF3 was around? How about when CFJ came around?
As for the whole 3D thing, that has little to do with “western countries” and everything to do with “casual gamers” and the “general, mindless masses” who buy shit like MKA. You can try and say this and that about how “popular” 2D fighters are in blah blah country/region, and I’m sure that stats can be found that some shitty game that really doesn’t deserve the attention is outselling it by far.
Are you seriously trying to dismiss facts? 02 was the last great success that KOF has had since 98. You know why? Because it tried to emulate 98. Is there any reason why you’re being hostile? Must you be right all the time, even when you’re not, or when PEOPLE HAVEN’T DISAGREED WITH YOU?
It was obvious that this was an experimental year. Did you forget about KOF96 in your rush to state that “KOF98 is the complete package”? Why you’re even bringing up these games when SNK was running out of funds and talent at this point is beyond me.
This was meant to be their swan song, as they didn’t expect to last through the millennium.
Not SNK.
So is this the truth behind your statements? All opinion? Nothing I’ve covered so far has been tainted with silly opinions. I’m going off of hard facts. 02 may have looked rough around the edges, but it played well, and it got money.
So, now that we’ve gotten the whole “I’m talking out my ass part”, do you have any real content to add to this thread? Concentrating on the past and whining about old ass games while dissing actual financial successes that were from this side of the millennium isn’t getting you any points.
LOL no they wouldn’t. I’m pretty sure most popular would go to Smash or Tekken.
In any case, Tekken got the best income award, so it’s pretty clear that it’s, if not the most liked game, indisputably the most played game. That doesn’t necessarily mean SF4 is a bomb. It’s been doing pretty steady business for awhile, though I am curious as to how the console release will affect it’s arcade rankings.
Yo fuck smash it’s not even on Japan’s list of the top 10 fighting games… their skill in fighting games and really their culture as a whole is obviously superior to every other country so i think that automatically makes them the authority on these kinds of issues ^__^’
also wouldnt it be sweet if Capcom released a new 2D game with every SF character ever in it?
if you disagree wtih me i will seriously fight you at Anime Con so yeah what’s up now! (i will be the obese caucasian male in the Tuxedo Mask costume so you know how to find me ladies heheh)
Yeah this one time i was hanging out with daigo and as he was parrying the shit out of me in smash he was like “man this game sucks” and I was like “yes” and he was like “im japanese and daigo and I say this game sucks” and I was like “yes” and then I think we made out while watching some of his youtube videos.
‘Game of the Year’ (and other categories for the Arcadia awards) was determined by reader votes. Had nothing to do with sponsorships.
And I wasn’t saying anything bad about T6. I have no doubt that it’s popular. My post was just directed at people who seemed concerned or confused that SF4 stacked up relatively low in the list.
Just wanted to make a point that coin-op ranking may show the overall popularity, but Arcadia voting (where majority of the readers are ‘dedicated’ or ‘hardcore’ players) may be a better indicator for how core players view things. You could take either results by grains of salt.
I actually don’t remember most of the rankings for other categories, but I could post them here if people care. I think they were in the February issue.
The ‘Best Character’ voting went something like: Ryu (SF4), Bob (T6), Petra (AH2) then Blitztank (Akatsuki).
Fate/Unlimited Codes was in the last coin-op ranking. I guess the popularity died down a bit after the game ‘matured’ a bit (people figuring out what seem like max combos and strats for most chars).
