I dont see anything fascinating about sfv gameplay even when two top players playing.
In sf4 when a player does a well calculated “sick” move audience can relate and appreciate. especially when it’s hard to pull that shit off. well in this game nothing surprises me, cos nothing is ultra hard and beyond the reach of regular players. no eye candy. since the game aims to close the gap between casuals and top players, game’s a month old and everykind of move is already in every casuals arsenal. daigo has some moves, so does “kiLLa_monster1998” (generic online id here)
In WNF recently a bison broke his block string and forward dashed on a read that the Dhalsim was going to use his VReversal. He teleported through the reversal and started a huge combo. It was pretty sick. I don’t think watching Evil Ryu land the same tough one frame combo for the four hundredth time was ever really as impressive as that.
you’re looking for the wrong things then
watching high level matches for combo execution isn’t what you should be watching for
these high level players have practiced these day and night and they can pull them off most of the time if not all the time
they will even pull them off multiple times in a match
It’s just muscle memory and you know they can do it
What really makes high level matches exciting is the timing, the mind games, the set ups, movement, whiffs, etc
Landing a normal into super just off the tip of a whiffed normal is hype
shimmys are hype
watching snake eyez walk up to the opponent half a screen away and spd is hype
what you’re talking about is basic stuff
like @Shumabot said
we all see daigo pull off 1f combo non stop it’s not the impressive part of the matches
Eehhh its just a matter of perspective or opinion or whatever the fuck you wanna put it
I have been watching the game at high level since it came out and I can honestly tell SFV feels way more engaging at high levels of play than 4 does
Sure you don’t get those moments of hype 1f link combo moments but who the fuck watches high level for combos ?
That moment where LI Joe bullied the shit out of fchamp with throws after cornering him and pulled off that sexy shimmy for the KO was fucking awesome, or when that Biaon made that read and teleported right through that Reversal and hit confirmed in recent wnf stream
Its okay, SFV might not be the SF for ya all but that doesn’t really mean other newcomers to SF wont enjoy it
Yes, it is a mater of both perspective and preference, there is no right or wrong answer to this one.
However, to the bold, I do. Watching PR-Rog pulling off one of those insane full screen Boxer combos that can only be done with full bar AND 1f links is major hype for me. Seeing ChrisG do the same with Sakura, or Diemninion Flash Kick > FADC > U2 is also sky high on the hype meter for me.
I have not yet seen anything in SFV that offers any thing near the examples, for me personally, yet.
I am waiting for EVO though, that’s when this games hype factor will either be high or low for me. EVO gives the top players the time and the stage to wow me. Again, this is just for me.
My hype kinda died a little more a few days ago. Saw a Nuki(Chun) vs Daigo(Ryu) online match the other day…both players had zero life left in one of the rounds, and happily still blocking fireballs. I just shook my head.
Except half of it was rendered irrelevant when you could fadc to make anything safe. It had reward but little risk which made hard reads uninteresting and turned the game into unending vortex or two players refusing to approach. It’s a very different style of play.
As more of an observer than a skilled player I find the reads and punishes interesting. I often don’t know which combos are easy or hard and honestly I don’t think I care. I find marvel so mindlessly boring for that reason.
I didn’t say anything of the sort
I didn’t even compare the two
I only said that those are what you should be paying attention to more in high level play
not combo executions
you so salty you can’t even think straight
Slight correction, it was at NLBC. Sabin (Art) vs. Moons
And to add to the details, it was V-Trigger Bison dash, the one that corpse hops. Meaty cr.HP in the corner, V-Trigger activate, dash. Art VReversal-ed the cr.HP but Moons knew he would and dashed to avoid it, then dashed back to the other side for the punish. I may not have liked this game so far, but THAT was pretty sick.
I agree and the same goes for Ken. He has a lot of air control, insane damage and dont let him get you in a corner. Hes the shoto version of Corner Bison pressure game. Its scary!
Yeah, but back then we didn’t really have forums, so everyone had to do it in person. People talk shit the way they do on an internet forum and you discovered the inspiration for Makoto’s Seichusen Godanzaki.
Chun Li and Dhalsim both require optimal execution based stuff that the average player cant do. Go in the tech thread for Chun and you’ll see people regularly asking about shit. Ricky just now at Final Round was pulling off charge sbk corner combos thay require specific timing and spacing.
The game is just more like 3rd Strike where the execution is more streamline and it’ll take time to find what truly makes execution for the game. Alex in 3rd Strike execution wide is pretty easy outside of charge partition shenanigans but he still has a lot of depth to him. Same with Elena.
Completely disagree. If someone has meter to FADC, then you still need to make a read, which means you need to take a risk. Zangief could punish any shoto’s DP FADC. And the vortex ended when ultra dropped, save for Ibuki.
Two players refusing to approach? Uh, that would end in a draw every round, in every game since 4 released. So that’s a very exaggerated argument to make. Everyone needs to pick their shots. And the player with a life deficit has more of an incentive to do so. That’s how it’s always been.
There are plenty of hard reads in 4 that were amazing to watch.
Daigo vs Momochi grand finals at Stunfest was amazing. Wake up low forward to beat the shimmy. Momochi reading Daigo’s backdashes and countering with his own forward dash. Momochi’s meaty cl.MK into Ultra on Daigo’s wakeup bc he saw that Daigo kept waking up with crouch jab.
Even Daigo using OG Ryu to ultra through Tokido’s low forward fireball block string during that same tournament was sick.
People keep complaining that SF4 had no risk-taking, but I disagree with that. While there may have been less “commitment,” in terms of health, or whatever, you still end up losing at least two bars of meter that you most likely will never get back if you’re playing against someone with high skill. And two bars of meter means a fucking lot most of the time. :x
EDIT: Not saying SF4 didn’t have its downsides, but a lot of people are trying to make it sound worse than it actually was. It’s a good game. Maybe not as good as 3S was and maybe not as good as what SFV will become. But it’s not a bad game.
