How about you learn how this place works instead of crying because you dont understand yet? Nothing about this community has ever been insular. Its easily one of the nicest and most helpful i’ve ever been a part of. This place is eager to teach anybody willing to learn. It just isnt willing to put up with dumb shit.
Spend more time lurking and less time trying to tell a place you’ve barely been a part of how it should behave. Its been around for 16 years. If you’re new, you have to accept that there is a fair bit to learn.
Are you sure this board isn’t insular? The average join date appears to be about 5 years ago and the amount of whinging about casuals is pretty impressive. Those are both strong indications of an insular monoculture with no growth.
The answer to your question is that we have a significantly high amount of lurkers in the site. There are people who casually post. But by all means, make an account on a forum to complain about how it isnt catering to you.
sigh This post indicates that you may have read my words, but failed to grasp the meaning behind them. It has absolutely nothing to do with bitching, or with hurt feelings or whatever other drivel you want to vomit up.
SRK is the hub for the FGC, as far as I’m concerned. This is “the” place to bring your game to a higher level, to learn about tournaments, to get involved in the FGC and make it grow. You, and everyone like you on this elitsm/hardcore stance that puts down the casual players and single player content should WANT those casual players, and those just getting their feet wet via single player content in the fighting game genre to come here.
You should WANT them to come here. If you see them asking about the single player content, instead of bitching at them, insulting them, or making “hurt feelings” comments, you should be pointing them in the right direction.
Instead of insulting them, you should be pointing them to the character discussion forums so they can learn their characters better. You should be pointing them to the regional matchmaking forum so they can meet other gamers involved already involved in the FGC, not insulting them.
You speak of growth for the community, for the genre, for everything about the fighting game genre. Yet your words say the opposite. If you truly desire growth here, on SRK, and there, at your locals, and over there at EVO, you should be welcoming the new blood by offering them the guidance to learn more. I don’t mean hold their hands, I mean something like this:
“Hey man! Welcome to SRK and fighting games! However, this forum is for the dedicated multiplayer aspect of the game, if your interested in learning more about the fighting mechanics and how your character plays, head over to the character discussion forum! Or, there’s the regional matchmaking forum, where you can find and meet other Street Fighters! Otherwise, not much help from this community here.”
Instead of:
“GTFO filthy casual, only the cancerous casuals give a fuck about that stupid story mode, noob. Fuck you!!!”
Not really hard to see which one is better suited for growing the community. Telling that newbie that he/she’s a fucking idiot for playing single player and not multiplayer hurts the potential for growth, not helps it.
That’s what I’m saying. That’s what everyone here SHOULD be saying. Problem is, so many are so full of themselves and have such a narrow view of things that just come off as elitist assholes.
I’d rather help that newbie and show them there’s more to fighting games then single player, then be an elitist asshole who is only concerned with those who think just like they do.
Just because SRk is meant for the competitive scene, and where people can get better online or local play, that doesn’t mean that people who enjoy single player content and other lore aspects of SF can come here to enjoy as well. In stead of pointing us in the direction of capcom-unity (which is a joke when it comes to forum discussion) or gamefaqs, you should embrace that you’re getting these kind of people to come because it is expanding the FGC. maybe not in the competitive way, but it’s expanding the community nonetheless.
It’s not “Come to SRK and FGC and claim your free Uncle”, but still I’d like to humbly apologize for my rudeness if you’ve felt unwelcome here. I never gave it a second thought but I guess those who joined like 2 years ago for instance are pretty new and perhaps even new to SF-games.
I was just venting off all of my steam “in that thread” since we last briefly spoke, because everywhere I looked in that thread it was just all negative opinions on SFV - a game that has had a lot of work, sweat and care put into it behind the scenes (so I would think, at least), and all of that was being completely disregarded and there was only request after request after request for something that’s completely unrelated to the core nature of the game, IE. the head-2-head part.
That said, I’ll have to admit I showed very little understanding of how you guys also are fans of SF, and are disappointed in what came with the package.
Still, I think the negativity has been really awfully loud, though… And we could all benefit from also showing understanding to Capcom, if they had to prioritize, and prioritized the gameplay, which in my personal opinion is just honorable, frankly…
Not even going to sugar coat it: I am absolutely astonished, after all the comments prior, that that post was written by you.
That said, the loud comments were born from a passion for the game, and the desire to have it, and the FGC succeed, not fail. While there were some complaints by folks here and elsewhere that were made simply to bash the game, the true complaints about the state of the product at purchase was because of the love of the game, the franchise, and the genre, not hatred. Many who voiced complaints, myself included, love playing the game, flaws included, after all.
Lastly, have a like.
P.S.- please use this experience to understand where people are coming from, before responding. Not a criticism of you, at all. Just advice so this…unpleasantness doesn’t happen again, on either side.
After all, everyone here loves Street fighter, and fighting games in general.
People realize this, they just don’t like it. No one wants to see a solid IP with a niche but devoted following bastardized in order to gain mass appeal. EA did that to the Battlefield series once they saw Activision making money hand over fist with their Call of Duty series. Hell, Capcom themselves already went down that road with Resident Evil.
If we look at just the sales figures, MKX is what every fighter should be like. Why wouldn’t it be? More people bought it, right? And while we’re at it, every movie should be a summer popcorn action flick, and every song should sound like Katy Perry. Why make anything with any substance when it means they would be losing money? No, Capcom should instead be looking at profit margins and how they can minimize their overhead so they can turn a profit on a tight budget. They should be looking at how Riot games and Valve are doing it so they don’t have to sell 4 million copies to break even. Then they can both make a solid fighter and a profit at the same time.
Yes please do look at the join dates, look at all the 09ers who either weren’t idiots and didn’t get blasted or who were and learned.
The same bumrush of newbies we have now with SFV happened with SFIV too and it was treated exactly the same, the idiots got clowned on, the people who weren’t complete fuckups became regular posters.
7 years from now we will have a fair amount of 16ers who either weren’t idiots or were willing to learn when they fucked up, all we lose are the thin skinned idiots who are unwilling to learn and catch feelings when they get clowned on for doing dumb shit.
What bumrush? The game is tanking and this community is hostile to the seemingly few new accounts being created. In another 7 years the average join date will be a 12 years ago instead.
Please knock it off with this fiction that SRK is hostile to new accounts being created. There are plenty of new posters that are being given constructive advice on the regular. If you’re receiving a different reception, you could very well have some responsibility in that.
People joining to be part of the community is great. What SRK–and most every established community for that matter–is often hostile to is, ‘Hi, I’m new here. This is how you should be.’
Be a little more optimistic. SF has been around for almost 30 years. If the game shows hints of being at risk, and that with something a little more tangible than a rocky start in a new journey, then it will have a very loyal fanbase who will try to help it out. My own little part is to purchase the “Season pass” so I won’t have to grind anything by my own lonesome self, and getting the soundtrack because it actually is really good, and putting a good word in for the game whenever I can. I think “Ono” himself was a loyal SF fan, and largely responsible for pulling the most weight in bringing the franchise back, and it’s back now almost stronger than ever - Capcom have big plans for it going even more “e-sport”, and the fanbase is really enjoying all of this. If you’re pessimistic then I still think it’s too early, but if you feel restless about it then I think we should await to see what Capcom first says (if anything, provided the game does pick up a lot more momentum), and then what they want to do, and see if there is anything we can about it if it’s bad news. At the moment I think you should just enjoy the ride…
Oh I’m sorry, I forgot that being called a cancerous idiot getting clowned on was a part of the intended new player experience. When someone is saying “Hi, you should be nicer to new people” the response of “Get fucked” isn’t really consistent with you not being hostile. That’s pretty much been the only suggestion I’ve ever made in this forum and it’s consistently met with ‘go die’. You’re hostile, this community is openly hostile to new players. That is visible from space. Every thread in the SFV general is bursting with hostility towards anything new/casual related. You even have your adorable little ‘16er’ title for new players because you have to fucking brand anyone trying to join your club.
Please knock it off with the fiction that SRK is remotely welcoming.
I don’t know where the game will go from here, and I hope it does well, but my concern is more with the fact that there is a relentless sense of hostility towards new or casual players here. Clearly I lurk a lot less than many so in some respects I bring it on myself, but it seems a lot of people are just waiting for new accounts to stick out their heads so they can chop them off. It’s like people have to mark their damn territory so we all know where they stand.
On the first page, the following quotes can be found towards the OP, a new member:
“Fuck you”
“People like you are ruining fighting games”
“Cancer”
This is just on the first page, of just this thread. I’ve been here for years, longer then my join date would indicate(long since forgotten my original account information). Not once have I ever considered SRK welcoming to new people. Not. Once.
It is what it is, don’t try to deny when the proof otherwise can be found on the very first page of the thread you make this statement in.
Gotta say, I’m in the same boat as you @LoneWolf80 right down to the join date being incorrect because of an older account (and I lurked long before that account). I mostly stayed confined to the story thread WELL OFF the beaten path of main-stream SRK because when I created the new account there was WAY too much hate thrown my way in other threads for being an "09"er regardless of the validity of what I had to say. Hence I stayed in the story forum where the guys (for the vast majority) are great and welcoming and very cool. Elsewhere though? Not so much. Hell, I saw 09’s saying things about SF4 that got them CHEWED OUT that is now basically canon goddamn fact for the state of the game. And why? Cuz now vets say the same thing so it’s okay. Typical.
It’s funny how much hate and what-not gets thrown MK’s way but, honestly, Testyourmight has a WAY better competitive community for helping and welcoming people…at least on the character forums. Especially the Sub-Zero and Erron Black sections. I joined TYM specifically to get better at MKX (having NEVER played an MK in any real way before MK9) and not only were people helpful, when I was able to contribute I felt like what I said was actually…y’know…considered before being outright dismissed because my join time was only a few months earlier. It actually encouraged me to keep testing stuff and contributing…which, in turn, made me much much better at the game.
I can barely work up the same enthusiasm to contribute here simply because I don’t have the desire to deal with getting my head bit off for speaking out of assumed turn.
Speaking for myself: I like going through arcade mode(after seeing my characters individual stories) as a time killer. I also on occasion like going through time attack modes for giggles. Oh, and playing arcade mode for unlockables, you know, more characters, costumes, things like that.
One more thing, your playing a video game. Unless your being paid for it, you are wasting your time the moment you turn the game on. Doesn’t mean some entertainment can’t be found outside a versus match, which is undeniably the best way to play a fighter.
Sometimes, I just want to punch some dudes face in, without the concerns of an actual match…y’know?
It’s not rocket science, people. I promise, it’s not.
