Any Audiophiles on SRK

*I’ve thought about it, but pricing is a factor for me. At that price point I could grab a dedicated headphone amp or a pair of Philips Fidelio X2’s.

I think it has more to do with the quality of the production and mixing. Since metal, rap, & techno have more guys that don’t know how to mix a record (not saying they’re all like that, just that those genres have more of an underground scene where financial concerns keep the records from being produced to a point where a high quality mp3 is worth it or a bedroom producer that doesn’t know what he’s doing) it almost wouldn’t matter if you were listening on vinyl even. A shittily produced record is a shittily produced record. But nowadays, I can hear the difference between a low quality MP3 and a higher quality one like night and day, even if it’s a crummy production. 160kbps is the absolute lowest I’ll go.

i have to say, I think jazz, classical, old country & R&B in particular are better on vinyl.

I don’t know if I’d consider myself an audiophile, but I have a somewhat highend home theater setup.

I have a full JTR setup

LCR - JTR Triple 12’s
LS/RS - JTR Triple 8’s
Subs - 2 JTR Captivator 2400’s

I wouldn’t call myself an audiophile because I don’t know the details and ins and outs of WHY things sound better, I just know from hearing them that they sound better than others. But I also don’t mind watching TV on a normal TV or listening to music from my phone speakers if I’m sitting outside, or like when I was painting this past weekend.

So my harmon kardon cl where replaced today.

They had nice mids without sacrificing bass.

Tried some audia technica bit way too mid and treble heavy. Didn’t like em.

The v-moda m100 where really nice, and where bass heavy. Something my cousin would love, but to expensive @200$.

I saw some sennheiser momentums, and I really really liked them. Discontinued or some shit. I asked them if I can buy the display ones. Nope.

Tried some wilkinsons x5. Really nice headphones, but the ear cusp was too small. But great headphones none the less. Harmonics from Shugo Tokumaru 5 a.m. song really shone through, and you could hear all the instruments and echos. A better more refined CL in every way.

OUT OF STOCK.

so I bought some AKG sonic 490. Had store credit of 108$ because the CL’s where discontinued…sadly, and that’s the only reason I bought new headphones.

Visually, they are very nice and minimilistic. They don’t have the same visual quarks the CL have. But really pretty imo and fit perfectly.

The sound is in the opposite direction of my CL’s. But in a good way. I base my headphones on picking dynamics and small little effects from instruments. It’s the small things after all.

Strong mids with clearer treble. Weaker bass. But I feel like they are clearer and stronger than the CL’s. Picking up the dynamics in picking from between the buried and me is clear as day. Stevie Ray Vaughn songs have a better sense of his directional picking, and distortion isn’t muddled as much. Classical sounds good, although electronic music doesn’t have that strong thump to it, but EQ can remedy that. Mexican music isn’t a cluster fuck of treble, so that was really nice.

I like them Vetter than my CL’s, but at the price I played they better had been better. Bought 4 year warranty so I can experience other headphones in 1-3 years in the event they break.

My G4ME ZERO’s are GDLK one of if not the best gaming headphone under $300. Highly recommended to everyone.

Audio Engineer full time here, not terribly interested in a lot of home/consumer stuff even at the high end. I used to record bands, now I’m in game dev (see my portfolio in my sig). So my target audience is either headphones and dinky speakers on a mobile device or basic home setups with typically improper surround setups.

I’m a producer myself and it sucks having to sometimes mix stuff for things like iPhone speakers or ear buds. If only everyone had a setup as good as your monitor setup, right?

What about music headphones? If you know. I was thinking of the PSBM4U1s

Really loving my current audio set up:

HE 560s
Bifrost Uber dac
Lyr 2 amp with orange globes

It cost a ton, but it sounds absolutely amazing and is worth it for me. Love listening to music after a long shift at work.

What place in Chicago are you talking about? Still new here.

how do you like the Biforst. I was thinking about getting the Ragnarok from Schiit. I herd very good things about the company but I havent tried any thing from them yet.

Copped Emerganc & I on Vinyl

Also for a nice laugh,

What do you all think about Skullcandy headphones? I’m currently using the Skullcrushers. They’ve been with me for 3 years now. I might upgrade and get the new bluetooth hesh 2’s.

Well I have a question for you. A good musician friend told me that I should try producing music with crappy to average studio headphones and practice mastering/mixing with them. His reasoning is that if you can make your music sound good in bad quality speakers or headphones then in a nice sound system your music would sound even better. What are your thoughts on this?

Oh btw I am still learning mastering.

I am getting back into buying vinyl again, and I have to keep myself from going to the record store all the time and buying more records than I have space for. Really looking forward to buying a house so I can have a listening room dedicated to good sound.

Also probably gonna buy this for my little one (or myself).

Love my bifrost, at least when it’s paired with the lyr 2. I haven’t heard it paired with another amp. I’ve heard some good things about the Ragnarok, but I haven’t heard it myself. You might want to check out head fi.

That depends. If you know the limitations of the headphones/speakers you’re mixing on and can compensate for it, then I can see that logic. But in the time it takes to learn that, you could be turning out better sounding mixes on better stuff. Personally I think investing in a decent pair of monitors is money well spent (I actually even listen to vinyl through mine.) You can get a pair of Yamaha HS-50s for not that much.

Speaking of Yamaha, their NS-10 monitors are kind of the most famous “crappy speakers” ever. They sounded bad, but every studio had them back in the day and as a result, mixing engineers learned how to compensate for their flaws, and it was preferable to mixing on a set of monitors that you don’t know that well.

already a member :D… Blackwolf1006

@Syke1‌ do you have a decent mix amp?

Also they appear to be a good choice for music, I’ll link u the audiophile YouTube channel you should watch that breaks down audio shit and headphones without the pretension when I get home.

The tonality is going to be different when playing music outside the headphones, especially if you decide to cut sibilance at say 2k to 6k hz, you might be over compensating it. You might be able to tell your peaks and dips in the headphones but when you get outside of that environment, you’ll still need to make more adjustments. Rather than by ear, something like a real time analyzer will probably be your best bet.

If you do get a Crosley make sure to keep good care of the needle/replace it or your Vinyls will be fucked up after a while.

*I’m sure most of you have seen heard this video before. But fuck it, I’m going to link it anyway.
