Anti Auto Block/Tech Strats

Clap is really easy to alpha counter. Yeah they lose a bar, but now you’re untechable knockdowned and took like 200 damage.

How you approach the situation depends entirely on the caliber of the player [S]cheating[/S] using the gem(s). If you are playing against someone at at least a competent competitive level, and one of you is using auto-block and the other is not, I do not see how the honest player can consistently win. There is no magical strategy that out-footsies a player who can walk forward while blocking. Unless of course you have the same ability to do so, in which case the game becomes…well, retarded. This is not even to mention the fact that the auto-blocking player cannot be mixed up either. Also you can’t really frame trap them either. A player who knows if his defense fails during a block string he is safe and can often even punish has no reason to press buttons. Throws are so trash in this game they can generally be teched on reaction.

Basically what I’m saying is two players at equal skill levels with one using auto-block and the other not using it will always be an unfair advantage for the auto-blocking player. One gem slot is not a huge investment. Personally I do not think removing ALL my boost gems would change my win rate in the slightest, much less only one of them. In my opinion there is not much point to this thread. If someone is counting cards in poker, you don’t try to figure out how to overcome the disadvantage of being cheated, you get him thrown out of the casino.

You can still frame trap them bro, you cannot cancel an animation for a move into block. U can still counter poke also. Command grab will still work and also bait and punish still works. Duh

How can you frame trap someone who isn’t pressing buttons? Frame traps only work against crouch tech/general throw mix-up avoidance or people who don’t know frame data.

How are people not understanding that when you have assist gems, there’s no reason for you to try and escape pressure. It’s putting you at a meter advantage and you are completely safe since the game will block/tech for you.

I have to admit, I don’t really understand the point of this thread. Developing tech for an inherently retarded mechanic that will never be tournament legal is a waste of time and energy.

It does suck that Capcom made a decision that in effect further widens the gap between tournament and casual online play, but it is what it is. People whom are serious about the game will find even less value in online than normal. The level of play online will be even more scubby and casual than usual.

Developing tech for this situation is like developing tech for not burning your sinuses when you inhale hot soup; there are already a number of far more reasonable alternatives already available to you.

I don’t think you understood my post very well. Yes, in the event your auto-blocking/teching opponent for some ungodly reason decided to mindlessly press buttons during your block string when it’s clear you have frame advantage, you could frame trap them. The issue is there’s no reason for them to. If you fear no throw or mix-up all you need to do is wait for an opportunity to backdash if you’re especially uncomfortable with their presence in your personal space. In my original post however my hypothetical did not include the use of an auto-tech gem, as I feel throws are so bad in this game crouch teching can mostly be done on reaction, thus making the auto-tech gem unnecessary.

There is also a gap between the kick and the clap. Its not a true string.

Alpha counter is my favorite thing about this game. You really need it to fight rolento and Hugo, and its useful vs everyone. you can also get full combos off of it depending on your character (mine is Jin) if you spend another bar to cross cancel.

plus you can jab him out of it, you can neutral jump out of it (or any jump) you can counter with any ex move or any move with invincibility like ryu medium dp

well if that is the case then command grab their ass. with king it doesn’t matter, he is grabbing your ass lol! I know it may be tough but still we are born to battle through tough situations. it is there for money grabbing capcom, either deal with it or dont play the game lol!

I wish there was an option to exclude gem in online mode

Just wanted to point out:
-the gem will activate even if you’re walking forward. So c.mk just outside of range of your opponent (while buffering something) is weakened as they can walk into your c.mk and still get the block. Therefore you cannot buffer into something unsafe.

  • you gain meter while blocking. This gem is seriously is like a sale on blocks, “block 4 times and get the 5th block free!”

  • the Ultimate Defense Gem (the one that does both auto block and tech, but costs 1 bar) also makes you immune to chip damage. If they ever release a lower meter usage version of that gem, then command grabs is the only thing that’ll work against them

  • ambiguous crossups are now useless because if they guess wrong, auto block!

  • all unsafe overhead mixups are now useless. Good luck Heihachi and Hwoarang!

See, but this is the only argument that’s been presented as an extreme negative. Zoner character, with a life lead, downbacking, throwing fireballs, aa’ing.

We get it already. It’s a strong combination, but that shit is “OP” even without gems. Also it’s your fault for getting hit by whatever they got the life lead with. What about other matchups? What about the characters that get jumped on and mixed up for free? As for those matchups you’re talking about though:

Empty jump over guiles fireballs at the right range, bait a c HP anti air and punish the whiff, same with ryu uppercuts. These classic ways of playing still work, and then you have to decide what to do from there depending on which assist gem they have.

If they have auto block, then throw them, if they have auto tech, mix them up. Even better, use both and get damage/knockdowns while stealing meter and letting the opponent know you don’t care what gems they have. You guys look at the gems and have already lost, you shouldn’t really change your gameplan. Their gems come completely secondary to them getting damage on you. They can’t downback round one, so win that round. They may have meter for the next rounds but they can’t use a cross arts to get massive damage and kill your red life, so switch around your characters and get as much red life recovered as possible. If they have a big damage character like gief or Hugo then they have plenty of punishable moves, like gief lariat not hitting on the back end.

It’s so matchup dependent too. There are ways around it, but some matchups are guaranteed to be ass for some characters. Have a diverse team so you can cover each of their weaknesses. Come up with multiple gem load-outs that you switch depending on the matchup, similar to choosing ultras in SF4. Are you gonna get hit a lot on the way in? Get defense and meter gems. Comfortable in the matchup? Attack and meter gems.

I know all this is easier said than done. But it’s only going to make you better IMO, especially if you’re taking the knowledge to other games or SFxT tournies with no gems.

Nah, just ban assist gems. They will never go pro.

Boost gems make the game interesting and fun.

everyone should just use the ultimate defense gem and everyone camps at the start using whiffed fierce attacks to gain meter until its full, and then everyone goes back and forth not taking any damage of any kind what so ever until crapcom sees how hideously borifying the potential is and totally RUIN this game for the noobs who use gems. im talkin like 1 - 2 months of ONLY using that shit and no one who likes gems will want to play online anymore.

well, I haven’t tried the ultimate defense gem yet, but according to Capcom it only negates chip on attacks that it blocks for you. If you block it manually you still get chipped.

big deal. chip in this game doesnt exist pretty much anyways.

I have an idea

  1. play a character with a fast jab
  2. get a small life lead early
  3. eat the clock with never ending jabs

who cares if they have auto block, you want them to block anyway. run dat clock down to zero.

the ultimate anti auto defense gems strat - pick double sagat. tiger camp all fucking day. SRK their jump ins on reaction.

Simple yet effective. Fight defense with defense, eventually they will have to learn to FIGHT! lol.
