What we dont need:
Complaining, Saying the game is broken.
Keep it constructive!
Edit:
Couple hours and nothing? Come on guys.
Not even a rebellious “dem gems break game” reply?
Time needs to be used more effectively.
Stop allowing auto-block to be the best excuse as to why we lost. If we allow our opponent to have full meter and a life lead with not much time left, then we probably would have lost anyway.
Attack levels and TIME needs to be used more effectively, increase your aggression when the damage is to be had, and decrease it when it is not. Win or lose the match in that time. The gems dont last 99 seconds.
Now lets hear some more specific ways to execute anti auto-block/tech via strategy/characters/teams etc.
I challenge you, SRK.
— EDIT - these assist games are always active, so you should really only use them if you are getting someone new to play and learn SF.
The assist gems only go off in a neutral state anyway. It doesn’t go off while you’re in animation (start up, active, recovery)
It really depends on who you use and who’s using the assist gems.
I’ve used it a few times online just to get a feel for how often they go off. If you play the way you usually do as if you don’t have it, it doesn’t go off too much. To be honest, I find it unlikely anybody is going to purposely walk and let the blocks go off and pressure you. There’s some sort of recovery time when they go off I think.
What whiffs are you going to punish when they don’t throw stupid shit out? 1 bar is 4 free wrong guesses. Make boost only lobbies online and kick these people.
If they’re litterally doing nothing and allowing the gems to defend for them, then they will be wasting meter (admittedly, fairly slowly). If they start doing stuff to avoid wasting meter, like poke you away, then they are open for counterhit setups. In some ways, it’s the same mindgames as before.
Other things to keep in mind, autoblock doesn’t activate in place of absolute guard. But say you do an ambiguous crossup and followup cr.LK, and even after the crossup it’s hard to tell which side you’ve landed on. If the crossup to cr.LK isn’t a true blockstring, they will have potentially activated autoguard twice. With the autotech gem equipped, it’s very difficult to manually crouch tech. My guess is you have 1 frame after you’ve been thrown to tech the throw and avoid activating the gem.
The real trick might be to find other gem combinations that are more worthwhile than autoblock/autotech. If someone equips both of those gems, they give up some very damaging, defensive, etc. options.
That makes sense, they need to be neutral to use or enable them, so just knowing that alone helps. I would like to know my opponent is going to play lame for 15 seconds or whatever it is, more power to me for knowing it.
That’s right, they are giving up damage by equipping them in the first place. I think the auto block and tech give you an edge in the guessing game, therefore increasing the mindgame.
Plus I would think it is very advantageous to have control of your METER, and know where it is at all times…with these gems, you dont have that control.
I think the fear of a few “wrong guesses” are freaking people out and they they are giving up a little to easily. Your opponents job is to try and frustrate you and WIN. So crying about these gems will only make them MORE POPULAR.
Of course, if you use a move on advantage and they auto-block, you’re still at advantage. There’s nothing special about it besides it just covers mix ups and slip ups on their part.
-If your character has a 2-hit overhead (e.g.: Akuma, Ryu), both hits will trigger auto-block if they don’t block high for the second hit. If they’re sitting on downback,
-Figure out which of your character’s chains are safe. If you happen to trigger autoblock during footsies, and then immediately boost chain into a safe normal, you might be able to trigger another autoblock before they start blocking normally.
Does any character have any good, safe pressure loops that deal fair amounts of chip?
Bison can still pressure. His scissor kicks are like -2, -5, -6 on block and some chars still cannot reach him on the MK and HK scissors on block. If you get a hit, just confirm into c.MP xx Special
get a zoner. Chip at the start and then you’re in the life lead. Whiff punish from there. If they move forward they can’t auto block they have to stay still. If your goal is to win that is the best approach. If you rush down on someone like ryu he’s not only gonna block your crap but out footsie you as you try to burn his meter away. Play it by the match up as well.
How is having a get out of jail free card on every mixup just by holding down back not a problem? How can you keep defending this?
Go to training mode and set the dummy to all block, that’s what you’re playing against when an opponent has auto block equipped. The cost is way too low for something that can get you out of a potential 400-500 damage had you gotten hit.
I seriously don’t understand how anyone in the right mind can keep defending this retarded idea. All I have to do is down back all day when I have the life lead and you can’t do shit. I don’t have to give you the opportunity to punish whiffed normals by not pressing buttons at all. I’ll just aa you all day and build meter throwing fireballs. How is this NOT a problem? It makes any sort of turtle character literally the best in game and extremely hard to catch their mistakes. And given the already free system of rolling to escape knockdown mixups, what else are you going to do?
Chip pressure? This isn’t MK9. Most specials that do decent amounts of chip damage are generally unsafe on block, or at best leave you at a disadvantage. And it will always be on block, since the game is blocking for them. Also, keep in mind that while you’re applying this “pressure”, you’re feeding them meter. I put pressure in quotation marks, since you can’t really put a player under pressure who has nothing to fear and can never be hit.
Assist gems don’t only go off in a neutral state. You can be walking forwards or backward or be in pre-jump frames and still have the game block for you.
Realistically, the only way to beat these gems is with a command grab character. However, it’ll still be a struggle, since they’ll just be holding up back whenever you get close.
I think it’s funny that people think these gems can be strategically countered, but all the strategies I’ve seen would never actually apply or work in a real match situation. Players aren’t training dummies, regardless of whether or not they’re using assist gems. If you keep pressing buttons when you’re at frame disadvantage, you’re going to get embarrassed.
Unless they are half competent and know how to tech. Even then you run the risk of being too predictable and getting reversal’d.
Seriously this isn’t a controversial game mechanic like gems. It’s just plain fucking retarded. And to think I pre ordered this garbage just a few days ago…sigh.
Im not defending anything, I am just getting ideas together instead of focusing on what is lost. We all know that a block can prevent a combo, stating the obvious and focusing on problems/what is lost isn’t what this thread is about.
I am thinking once we have a nice set of ideas, we can combine them into an overall stronger game plan.
This is really lame. Other than the main whiff punishing, depleting meter and command grabs the only other things in a real match that may work are:
Have a character than can easily get to punish fireballs from full screen. Akuma being a good example. If you can predict a fireball you can easily ex demon flip for a free punish. Misogi also kills your zoning.
Lame them out. This is going to be WAY harder than it seems. If they are playing Guile, they will no longer walk into random fireballs. You can’t really sweep them if they are walking forward. You can aa, but why would they jump when they can just hold forward safely.
Just imagine trying to play an AE match and the other guy has auto block. Whatever you do to try to catch them off guard will no longer work. On top of that they can punish you if it’s unsafe. I got caught a lot by stuff like random slides or even random scissor kicks from half screen. Won’t be a problem anymore. As someone already said this isn’t as easy as it seems in an actual match.
