Anime & Manga Thread v.5 FAQ/IRC: See OP. Welcome to 2017

Didn’t she have the red jacket during her gang banging days? It could be a callback to that.

She should just bust out them titties instead. :coffee:

I guess that’s what I missed by not watching the second half of the first season.

Oh she did alright. Would hit.

Yeah, Railgun S2 is something that can be enjoyed as long as you really don’t think too hard about what’s going on or why whatever is going on is going on. Once that hurdle has been cleared it’s a fairly enjoyable series.

Scrap that. It’s actually Baby Blue, a 15min short directed by Shinichiro Watanbe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Kids on Slope director) for the Genius Party collection.

Just found out about Kill la Kill. Finally, something this season that breaks me out of my spell of watching only old shows (that isn’t Eva or Ghost in the Shell).

Kyoukai no Kanata ep1 out subbed!

New seasons are always a stressful time for me. I mean, there are just so many shows to watch, you don’t want to fall behind. But at the same time, if you don’t finish the stuff from the last season, you might not ever get around to it.
People just don’t appreciate the work that goes into being in on the cutting edge of anime.

Coppelion too.

Damn, looks like I’m gonna be checking out 15 shows this season. Kyousogiga is only 7 minutes an episode though so I guess that doesnt really count. I shouldnt be watching the second seasons of Freezing, Valvrave and Infinite Stratos but I need my fix of trainwrecks and Chifu-nee.

I honestly have half a mind to watch the first seasons of Freezing and IS just so I can watch the second seasons and enjoy the trainwreckitivity and silliness.

Coppelion was pretty cool.

It combined 2 of Japan’s favorite cinematic themes. Fear of nuclear annihilation and school girls.
Art was nice…although at first they were shockingly pale…like…vampire baby powder slapped in snowstorm white.
Like Seitokai Yakuindomo meets Metro 2033 or Fallout.
I mean…without the wise cracking jokes or graphic violence. The world isn’t ready for an anime THAT good.

Infinite Stratos wasn’t all that bad until Shinonono got all dumb the last few episodes. If you had to pick one I’d day go with IS. Only thing I remember about Freezing was tits and the ED. You could pick up the second season and not be missing out on much.

well the art was nice cause its done by the same people who did K, so the overall animation and shit should be top notch. i havent picked it up myself yet, going to hold off till i hear more about it in a few eps.

Watched the SNAFU OVA, and it makes me realize how much i miss Hachiman’s great outlook on life. i want more

I actually read well past that in the manga, so I know what happens, I just kind of feel like seeing what the anime looks like for no reason whatsoever.

I didn’t find Project K’s art to be that spectacular. The First episode was embellished with a ton of video filters and all sorts of capturing techniques. That was definitely awesome, but it was prominent in the first few episodes only (if not only the first). The bright glowing graphics we later see on occasion should not IMO make up for the overall animation quality. There was the scene transitional slides where the camera gets an overview of the city, but it was usually the same places (namely the bridge IIRC), but again, how valuable is a transition shot at a city really?

Not that I’m not digging Coppelion,

but don’t those girls seem woefully under-prepared?

And under-dressed?

Short skirts? In a survival situation? Really, hypothetical future Japan? Really?

I tried to watch that and couldn’t make it 5 minutes in with the terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible subs.

Uchouten Kazoku - 13 (END)

Spoiler
[]Yasaburo arrives at the room of the Friday Fellows at Sensuiro, as the club members settle in to their new location for the year-end party. After Yasaburo has a brief chat with Benten about some stuff, Mother (in tanuki form) is brought into the room, where the other club members react happily, except for Yodogawa, who appears to be surprised at the presence of this particular tanuki.
[
]Next door, Soun discredits Yaichiro’s claims against him and even turns his focus on the present Yajiro, with some choice statements. Yaichiro has had enough and transforms into a tiger to punish Soun for his actions. The quarrel between the Nise-emon candidates spills over into the Friday Fellows’ room, as the sliding door is knocked over by Soun. Reactions by both parties are a mixed bag: the Friday Fellows are surprised at the sudden interruption, and the tanuki are surprised to see Benten, which causes a few of them to revert from human form.
[]Both Soun and Yaichiro are surprised to see Mother. Soun argues with Jurojin about the status of Mother in regard to hot pot stuffs. As Yasaburo is about to make an attempt to possibly rescue Mother, it is Yodogawa who steps forward to take Mother out of Jurojin’s reach, and recognizing Mother as the tanuki he saved/helped many years ago. Jurojin and some of the other members chastise Yodogawa’s actions, as well as his ideals/beliefs on eating, and Yodogawa responds in kind toward the Friday Fellows, in regard to the year-end tanuki hot pot tradition, besides realizing the defeat of his ideal/beliefs on eating and what one could love in regard to eating. The other tanuki realize that the Friday Fellows are the group next door and go into mass reversion, which then results in widespread panic when Jurojin makes a comment about hot pot stuff due to the abundance of present tanuki that are scrambling to escape from their room. In the confusion, Yodogawa loses hold of Mother, who is rescued by Yaichiro. As Benten goes over to check on Yodogawa, the sliding door to the other side of the Nise-emon meeting opens, revealing Akadama, whose appearance silences everyone present.
[
]A drunk Akadama is about to go on a rant about how he is being ignored, when Yasaburo causes a scene by pushing Benten onto Yodogawa, which results in a compromising position of sorts. Akadama has had enough; he makes a statement toward everyone in the adjoining rooms, besides remarking on his pride as a tengu. Afterwards, he utilizes the Fujin Raijin folding fan and with one wave, destroys the upper-level rooms of Sensuiro.
[]Yodogawa is running for his life as Akadama chases after him, causing some destruction/ruckus in his wake with the Fujin Raijin folding fan. The Shimogamo brothers attempt to stop Akadama, but they are blown away into the air. Benten rescues them and says that she’ll handle things from here on out. Benten makes a motion to quell Akadama’s anger/outburst at the recent transgression, which succeeds, and results in Akadama’s change in mood and departure - with Benten.
[
]After the departure of Akadama and Benten, the Shimogamo brothers check-in with Mother, via Yashiro’s cell phone. The phone makes it’s way to Yajiro, who has a brief and tearful reconnection convo with Mother. Mother and some other tanuki are waiting on the brothers to join them at another meeting spot.
[]New Years Day rolls around, and the Shimogamo family is doing shrine visit stuffs. Yasaburo runs into Yodogawa, who says he is doing well, despite having been ousted from the Friday Fellows. The Shimogamo’s also encounter Akadama and Benten, with the tengu having some parting words for Yaichiro, Yajiro, and Yashiro (probably some words from Soichiro), before he and Benten go off to make their rounds with their shrine visit. Kinkaku and Ginkaku make an appearance as well and as they are about to get into it with Yasaburo, Kaisei scolds her brothers and diffuses the situation. Yasaburo and Kaisei (who is still out of view, but present) have a brief convo about Soun’s whereabouts, besides making a mention of their limited visual meeting status.
[
]As Yasaburo makes a ritual wish offering, Benten joins him at his side, and the two of them talk about wish-making for the New Year. Benten is rather blunt about what/who she appears to want, but Yasaburo only has a modest wish for the well-being of his family and friends, though to lead an interesting life is all a tanuki could ask for.

Ending credit scenes show the Shimogamo family spending some time at Akadama’s place, and later, Yasaburo engaging Kinkaku and Ginkaku in a snowball fight.
• Three rooms suddenly become one, as tanuki, human, and tengu encounter one another.
 • Yodogawa stepping up to save Mother was somewhat unexpected, but the statement that he made while doing so, in regard to his ideals/beliefs, was oddly fitting.
 • Poor tanukis… all scrambling to escape. Could’ve opened a door first, but ‘surprise’ Benten was quite effective, lol.
 • Poor Yashiro… who gets kicked to the side, while trying to restrain Akadama, lol.
 • ‘Drunk’ Akadama’s appearance was too good.
 • lol @ Yasaburo starting stuff with the Yodogawa/Benten incident, right in front of Akadama, too.
 • Akadama too strong… especially with assists from alcohol, something involving Benten, and the Fujin Raijin folding fan.
 • As much as Benten causes Akadama problems, she is also the solution to them?
 • The scene where Akadama has some words for the other Shimogamo brothers, was a nice moment.
 • I guess the face-to-face meeting of Yasaburo and Kaisei is meant to be fleeting.
 • The ending was fine for what it was; an upbeat conclusion of sorts to a ride of varying emotions that were featured/experienced over the course of the series.

final thoughts:

Spoiler

The world of Uchouten Kazoku was an interesting and enchanting one; the backdrop of the city-scapes of Kyoto, where the story took place, and the interactions of it’s often quirky denizens of varying race, made the world it presented quite vibrant in activity. Family was a focal theme of the series, though other themes were also present, like non-romantic affectation and the morality of eating anything. The soundtrack often added to the ambiance, highlighting the emotion of various scenes. Some of the visuals/environs (namely the submerged clock tower, the aerial airship battle, and the false electric railway redux), made me feel like I was watching a Ghibli film at times, and though things were set in a modern time period, there were some occasions where things felt fantasy-like and magical.

The relationships and interactions between the various characters, were a highlight of the series. Whether it was the Shimogamo family members, the relationship between/among the trio of Yasaburo, Benten, and Akadama, the Ebisugawa family, the other tanuki, tengu, and humans, the communication felt natural and honest and possibly something that a viewer could relate to at times, even if a number of the characters were non-human. Benten was quite the intriguing character; Her actions were alluring and mysterious at times, and coupled with the bewitching tone of her voice, made for a distinctive personality. Souichiro, even though he existed in a life-after-death capacity, was a figure that had an impact on the other characters; which is something that reminded me of Aika’s role in Zetsuen no Tempest.

Though it took some time for things to get going, with things gradually building up and slowly unraveling, the journey through this unique series, was quite memorable.
