These state representatives introduced a bill that fines men caught with their pants sagging more than three inches below the hip exposing his skin or undergarments.
Infractions would result in a $25 fine for first-time offenders with a max of $75, plus six hours of community service after multiple slip-ups. Saggy pants would not, however, result in a criminal record.
"Itâs unbecoming, itâs unprofessional,â said Rep. Joe Jefferson, a Democrat from Berkeley County whoâs one of the billâs sponsors. âNow thereâs some misunderstanding. I understand that some people are assuming that if one is caught, then they wonât be allowed to go to college, grants, loans, all these other opportunities will be taken away. Thatâs not the case at all. This is just to prevent these fellas and giving them at least an obligation to realize that theyâre walking around and theyâre convincing others to follow them. Thatâs not what itâs all about.â
Jefferson said the bill is not designed to target minorities.
âitâs no more than a warning to allow these fellas to be more responsible,â says Jefferson. âIt is not just targeting African-American men. I see men of all races walking around with this same problem. It is just disingenuous, we should not have this. There ought to be a better way.â
The head of the American Civil Liberties Union of South Carolina called the bill a âwaste of taxpayer moneyâ and an intrusion on South Caroliniansâ civil rights.
âWe would hope that our elected legislators are working on more important issues and causes that enhance the economic viability and increase protections for all South Carolinians,â Executive Director Shaundra Young Scott said in a statement. âInstead, our lawmakers are making and introducing bills to criminalize sagging pants, which will disproportionately affect minorities in communities and schools.â

I saw that, and that CNN reporter just came off as an asshole. Why would this woman know whether or not Russia backed that FB page when sheâs probably pushing 75 and is just lewrning not to believe everything she reads on the internet? That was just smug CNN gotcha âjournalismâ designed to make CNN watchers feel good but does nothing to inform anyone of anything except that CNN and its staff arenât above chasing people around with cameras and embarrassing them for not knowing things most people wouldnât know. Between this and all the celebrity trash they âreportâ it can be hard to call CNN a ânews Networkâ sometimes.

Back in the long, long ago of the late 90s, I went to stay with my dad and step family in California for a while. I didnât have much in the world at that point, but my only real job had been in a music store so I had a metric fuck-ton of CDs. Mostly obscure shit I paid for on the cheap, but also a lot of more mainstream promo and in-store-play CDs labels were always giving out.
So my step sister, about 14 at the time, had a crush on a neighbor boy, same age. Boy had conservative, churchy parents, trying to rebel. My sister asks if she can pick out some CDs the kid can borrow as a way of impressing him. I say sure, let her look through my collection, she takes Mansonâs Portrait of an American Family, and No Doubtâs Tragic Kingdom.
About a week later, I wake up to ambulances across the street. Kid had hanged himself from a tree in the night. Nobody noticed until the morning.
So Iâm out two CDs, because fuck if Iâm going to the dead kidâs parents to say âHey, you donât know me but can I get my stuff back? Oh, and sorry for your loss.â
Thing is though, about 2 months later, Iâm channel surfing basic cable bored out of my mind with everything on. Surf passed CSPAN for like the 2nd pass⌠hey, wait, donât I know that guy? So I stop and watch CSPAN. Itâs the kidâs dad. Testifying before some Congressional panel, saying that devil music drove his son to suicide. Holding in his hand as his evidence my Marilyn Manson CD.
