American Government Thread 2: RIP John McCain, 81

I’ve seen some of Walsh’s tweets that make me think “What crazy fucked up world are we living where I read his stuff and instantly go, ‘Yup’”

The science is getting there, but more to the point, when has science been the ultimate harbinger of who gets human rights? It wasn’t so long ago (in fact some assholes still like to talk about it) that the science of other races “proved” them to be intellectually inferior, which was used as proof that they didn’t deserve civil rights, and now we know that science to be hogwash.

And even if we did use science only as a basis, there will never be any biological link to racial identity, because it just doesn’t exist. Trans people have been a thing throughout history, and yet we’re lead to believe this is a modern phenomenon with no real basis because…why? We know why.

There’s a difference between being iffy on the exact science of something and erasing that identity completely because it may not make 100% sense to cis people. Civil rights protection ain’t much, it’s just asking that trans folk don’t get fired or treated like shit because of a thing they can’t control. A lot of jerks have made the slippery slope argument that that once it happens (it will, progress always wins), trans folk will run amok and start litigation nightmares for false discrimination. Someone in this thread referred to it as “the trans lobby,” like it was this group of hucksters. These are arguments rooted in nothing but fear and hatred, and fear and hatred have no place being national law.

You speak beautifully and make cogent points, but I fear that reading is not your strong suit if that is what you took away from the Quillette article.

Looks like we have a love connection

Let’s talk about how “voter ID” is super important:

… oh right it’s not actually useful nor important it’s just a tactic to get an edge in elections. Heaven forbid that we get everyone to actually vote through easy stuff like absentee ballots, better poll access, etc.

Great article from the Globe on the subject:

Congress is holding up progress on the wall. This is going to change after November 6th. Republicans are going to win the midterms.

How can the US Congress hold it up if Mexico is the one paying for it?

No, I got that from you. That Quillette article, sadly, is more concern-trolling from a well known TERF, which is becoming sadly pretty common. Science is not “under attack,” people are just tired of “research” based around memes and misunderstood fears that evidently prove nothing. This is the same type of reporting that shitheads like Jesse Singal will do that are stooped in transphobia and bigotry, yet then proclaim themselves allies. It sucks.

I’m pretty sure he wants to tax the hell out of Mexican goods to give an incentive to American companies to manufacture in America. I guess we will see if this plan works when the wall goes up.

What does “win the midterms” mean here? House and Senate, I presume?

Given that this is a historically bad map, I’d say they win the Senate for sure. But I think the only way they win the House is if voter turnout is low. I think most people in this country are against what’s going on in Washington. I mean, that’s presuming you care about the future of this country, economy, and/or planet… but those are just librul concepts these days.

The only way for the Dems to not win the house is insanely low voting turnout. Given how many places are up 300% for these midterms vs 2014 it will be VERY unlikely. The Dems have a better chance to take the Senate which isn’t going happen.

People realize the consequences for not voting or writing in Harambre.

Seriously Trump deserves ALL the credit for the increased voting. Might be the ONLY thing he has actually done since taking office and deserves the credit.

Its fucking 2018.

Seriously these people need immediate psychiatric help. Obamacare covers it so no excuse to not get the help these people clearly need.

Wait so calling for jailing your political opponents is not typical? I thought we were all about calling for jailing your political opponents, suggesting they be shot, preparing in advance to call any election you lost fraudulent (as suggested by foreign powers), lying about election results, changing the rule of law to bypass checks and balances, vilifying the media, vilifying anybody that disagrees with you, and just ignoring any fact that doesn’t agree with your viewpoint?

If vilifying women complaining about attempted rape yet sticking behind despots murdering journalists with bonesaws is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

The law of innocent until proven guilty is there for a reason. There are predators posing as house pets out there.

See when republicans do it that is just a-ok

When dems bring up credible concerns it is mudraking

I am hoping ted loses badly

The house goes blue…and i hope the senate goes 50/50

WHERE ARE THE TRUMP SUPPORTERS AT? JUST GOING TO IGNORE THE CONSTANT LIES? WHAT ARE YOUR GUYS THOUGHTS? OR WHAT ABOUT HIM ADMITTING FINALLY HE IS INDEED A WHITE NATIONALIST?

Sadly a major travesty is going to happen because of Trump/GOP/Fox News/Info Wars/Youtube and the rest of the right-wing propaganda machine. These people live in a bubble and really believe this crap.
