So I’m watching a bit of McCain’s memorial service at the Washington National Cathedral. They had the children’s choir sing America the Beautiful. While this is happening, they have Obama, Bush Jr and Clinton sitting together in descending order from the main walkway in between pews.
Trump isn’t there. Trump wasn’t invited. I can’t help but feel that this dumb ass feud between Trump and McCain didn’t take something away from the country.
This is on both ends of it too. I understand and partially agree with McCain sticking it to Trump. A chunk of me respects him taking it to the grave. It also feels like this level of pettiness has trascended into the culture in unacceptable ways. When you can’t even put a cease fire to anger in death, the tone your setting for the national culture is strange.
List of dignitaries you wouldn’t think were there: Henry Kissinger, John Kasich and…Huma Abeddin. No Hillary though; she may have been to the left of Bill where the shot didn’t get her.
The Puerto Rican flag is also hanging at the cathedral. It’s a good thing we aren’t “citizens” though. Don’t want that kind of commitment assigned to us.
Small tidbits: the US Military has style to spare. Seriously their aesthetics for things is ridiculous.
Smaller tidibt: pretty sure I want G-Spot Tornado to play at my funeral.

Yeah, man, both sides. McCain definitely did Trump wrong. Trump definitely apologized. Some very fine people on both sides.
I’m unclear why it’s petty to not cave in to asshole behavior. In theory maybe we could hope that people are able to stop being assholes, as opposed to pretending that we gain anything by coddling horrible people. The first step is for them to stop being horrible.

Because at the end of the day, the actual president needs to be a leader. Part of that is at least letting him attempt to create some sort of tone for moments like this McCain wanted to stick it to him and Trump did too. Instead of being able to get a time out for somebody’s death, we get a mean girls funeral where the sitting President wasnt invited to the service of a senator who died in his seat.
Ultimately these leaders are setting the tone for national discourse. If bad blood is going to run through a funeral service then we are drawing very clear lines about how we’re behaving regarding all of this. Mourning doesnt need to get politicised.
You’re on some next level shit if you cant see why a making a virtual blood feud over politics is an awful fucking idea.

Trump is president and McCain wanted to be one. Trump doesnt know his head from his ass and McCain shouldve had some foresight about what it meant to tell the president he couldnt attend a senator’s funeral.
The RNC shouldve stepped in the moment they found out about McCain being serious. This is the type of leadership failure that damages the overarching American culture.
99.9999999% of the RNC gets to have the level of dishonesty regarding forgiveness that Hillary has about representing women and having stayed married to a predator for decades.

By failing to reconciliate Trump and McCain, the RNC cheapened the office of the Presidency. The sitting president should be attending these funerals because of what the office represents, not whomever is sitting in it. This also means that Trump should’ve manned the fuck up and fix things. But he wasnt go demonstrate an iota of that type of leadership.
It isnt about Trump or McCain. Their bullshit got out if hand and let to an outcome that hurts everybody. The republican party is forever about taking feuds to the grave.
But there is no bullshit on the part of McCain.
