Am I missing something, or does GameStop really think I'm an idiot?

I’ve not bought a used game since getting PS+. It’s a much better deal than their power-up card thing. I go to gamestop now for new games only. Just make sure they have the shrink wrap on.

Pretty much why I hate going there now.

Two of my friends and I, all employed, applied for Gamestop about three days ago. I don’t even know why I applied seeing they never got back to me at all in the past few years and they pay a $1 less than I get at my current job. Not only that, I can walk to my job too.

My friend wanted a new job (she works at a bowling alley) while the other (he works at Atlanta Bread Company) just wants free games.

I’ll take my $8.25 an hour and be happy. :coffee:

On topic, there’s a Power Gamer in my area. I’m gonna go on a shopping spree there someday.

you dont get free games, just get to borrow them for a couple days as long as there is an abundance in.

That’s what I meant to say. I don’t know why I said free games.

I tried to forget GS existed. This GTAV Collector’s Edition is the only thing making me want to buy from them.

Fuck them.

I ordered Dragon’s Crown at Amazon, did not want to wait for a week, so i went to GS bought a copy. Will return Amazon copy to GS.

I started working at GameStop back when it was still called “EB Games.” It was fun during those times. Quotas were non-existent. Things were relaxed and enjoyable. Just help the customer get the game they want, that’s all you needed to do. Shortly after I started, the name changed to GameStop and suddenly things became very corporate, very fast. Still, it wasn’t terrible.

Then, something happened. My boss, who had been with the company for more than a decade, slammed the door to the back office after a conference call, threw his keys on the desk and said “Get out as fast as you can” while walking out the door. I believe this was around the time KB Toys went out of business, leaving pretty much no competition for GameStop nationally. Despite the lack of competition, for some reason the upper deck was getting much more strict on quotas and shit, to a point of absurdity.

My next boss came in, straight from corporate. Now, my old boss, I still talk with him on the regular, we’re good friends. The new guy - I hope I don’t ever see him a day in my life. And if I do, I’ll be fighting the urge to punch him right in the face. Fucker didn’t do a god damn thing when he got there, the stock area went from a B- to being a rat’s nest. His MO was basically to scout customers and see if they were going to pre-order and/or subscribe. If they didn’t, he’d push them off to me and then sit around doing nothing. If they did, he’d tell me to get off the register and straighten up the walls so he could get credit for their pre-order/sub. He did this shit every fucking day he was there. And whenever the rest of the staff would call him on his do-nothing self, he’d say “I’m the manager, you guys are the ones that are supposed to work.” Maybe that attitude would work in some hole in the wall store that no one goes to, but we were the highest traffic store in our region. That shit wasn’t going to cut it, especially if you only have two other employees who aren’t the manager.

Where was I going with this? Anyway, GameStop is a poor excuse for a game store, but at the same time - it’s the only excuse for a game store nationally. So, yeah, I do still shop there when I can’t get the game anywhere else if I want it on release date, as was the case for Dragon’s Crown and most other “Not-Call of Duty” games. Any of you guys that do have a locally-owned game store, please support the hell out of it. I’d do it if I had the option.

That said, this deal doesn’t seem that bad, honestly. You are basically renting the game for as long as the Xbone takes to come out for $10. Not even Gamefly can give you that deal.

So what would happen if he gets the credit instead of you in the pre-order? Do you lose your job?

Yep, he’s actively fucking him out of his pre-order quota, which GS used as their main metric to see if you were doing your job.

BUT GAMESTOP ISN’T BAD, GUYS!

Yeah, its commissioning without the money for it (like how I’m a salary employee means that I get paid hourly, but once I go past 40 hours - I get nothing for it  ).

I dunno, what other options do they have? They can increase how frequently corporate comes thru (which raises overhead cost). They can monitor total sales, but it doens’t say shit about the sales person at a store like that to ring up a sale as often people come in knowing what they want. The better salesman is hard to ‘rate’ in that situation. When I was at BB it was initially about the service plan and warranty and eventually magazines…it wasn’t volume sold but the add-ons that were used to measure performance. When we would have a sale on the cheapest CD players with free install, we’d get swamped, and it wouldn’t take a good salesman to close the transaction, but a good salesman would get service and possibly other upgrades.

The issue @The7K has is that his new(er) boss is a self preserving ass, but I can’t paint blame on the organization itself.

Except gamestop has a shrink wrapper in the back room. The plastic is different than what the games come in, but average person doesnt know that.

All I know is if its a big game like GTA5, I’m grabbing it at a 24HR Walmart. All the nerds can wait in line for 3 hours just to be cool, I’ll leave at 11:40, get my game, and be done. Lesser games, you might have to get at GS. Its whatever.

As far as working at GS, you probably dont want to be any higher than a ASM. Get a store, lose your job quick.

Yes.

I didn’t get fired, per say, because I was still getting scraps on occasion, but I went from working 25 or more hours a week to working 5 or less, sometimes even going weeks without being on the schedule. So, yeah, not technically fired but may as well have been. They likely had too much bitch in them to actually come out and fire somebody.

Alright i can see why you would be upset. I thought you were just not getting credit for it but everything stayed the same. When i used to have a shit job, i would do all the work & the manager would take all the credit. I really didn’t care as long as i got paid.

never saw this when I worked there, never heard of it from my friends that work there. this is either ymmv or some bs yall are making up

We had a shrink wrapper. It was VERY obvious which ones were factory sealed and which ones were shrink wrapped (to a collector anyway. The corners were the give away) but still, it was there.

As for how to judge employees, they used to use customer satisfaction surveys back before they became the beast they are. Even after, They also used to count replacement plans, which got phased out in terms of importance in favor of preorders. That shit never made sense, 99 times out of 100 no one ever uses their replacement plan. It is literally free money.

GameStop doesn’t think you are stupid… the company just thinks its a warrior and all our last names are Handsome.
